We invite all ho desire work done: to call und examine oar raviiitiet and specimen. Cd" Look at the first page lor paragraphs of "interest. Hos. Jesse D. Bright, will speak in this citj on Saturday next, at 7 o'clock p. m. " Time. Our two town clocks are certainly 'fit t subjects for the poor house. They are '"miserably poor and can't work. ; 07" Yesterday was a regular March day. The wind blew coldly from the North, and 'fires were very comfortable. 07" The slight rise in the river brought to 'our wharf yesterday two steamers from Lou'isvi'.'e the Charter and A. I. Davis. ÖT Fishermen are doing a big business with the hook and line in the river opposite the levee. The fish are very abundant, tho of the small fry class. Circo it Coukt. The case of the State against Jacobs and others for murder was commenced yesterday. . P. S. Since writing the above, a verdict has been made in the case of "Not Guilty" 07A beautiful little sloop passed down the river on Sunday. She was painted blue with a white band near the top and sat on the water like a duck. We did not learn her name or destination. Railroad Accidents ning a freight train, o Last Thursday eveon the Cincinnati and Marietta Railroad, ran train a few miles below into the passenger Chillicothe. A boy named Wilson Ramsey was killed, aud machinery and cars to the amount of ten thousand dollars were destroyed. An accident occurred on the Little Miami road, caused by the breaking of a T rail, which threw the tender and front cars off the track, injuring several passengers. ' i Rivee. The river at Cincinnati from the ßth inst., the lowest water of the season, up to . the 25th, had risen thirty three inches. On Saturday there was three feet full on the shoalest bars between Louisville and Cincinnati. The last advices from Pittsburgh state that there is no prospect of any more water -at present. The Kentucky river had risen . over six feet on Friday and was still rising. (This will materially aifect navigation, and we 'may look for a fair stage of water soon. The Mo.es McLellan and Superior, entered th Louisville and Cincinnati mail line yesterday. Fire. Our forms were closed on Saturday evening, and we had no opportunity of notic- ' ing the fire of Sunday morning. We notice it ;now, however, to compl iinunt the boys' Company, whouso the machine owned by ;Mr. Lewis' Howes. The "Sissie" did good strvice at the fire, and proved that she might be very useful, where the only water to be r, procured is from private cisterns. The "young 'Americana" are trying to raise money enough to buy the "Sissie," and we hope that our ' citizens will extend to them the aid they need. The building, which was partially burned, was the Gallawav House, on Vine street. '.Loss light. Merchant Tailor. Our popular friend Mr. D. S. Anderson, whose new advertisement will be found in another column, has opened a large and tasty merchant tailoring establishment in one of the new brick buildings on Main street, nearly opposite this office. His new goods ' have attracted considerable attention from r their superiority. They are of far richer quality than any similar goods ever before ' opened in this city. ' He has some most ele gant Testings, of the latest styles, with the - finest cloths and cassitneres for coats and pants. He is prepared with the best of workmen to make up these goods per order and in the fashionable styles. lie has good taste, and - makes an excellent fit, Mr. Anderson is ex bibiting a good deal of enterprise in his branch oi Dusiness, ana snouia meet witn even a - more liberal patronage than that already to ' freely extended him. A One-Horse Mgss. lust auer the fire 'occurred on Sunday morning, Pat. McPhillips - discovered a sleepy looking son of Erin emerg. ing from his stable, which is situated near the burnt building. Pat. accosted the individual with true Irish familiarity, and sent him - sprawling on the ground. The man denied having been in Pat's hay-loft, but Pat. had circumstancial evidence in his favor, for a head of tangled hair, fiHed with hay-seed, corrobo- . rated the evidence of Pat.'s visual organs. As this is a free country, every man has a right to entertain his own opinionand exprest it too, (of course at hi3 own risk,) so Pat. delicately intimated to the man that he might possibly have fired the Galla way House, which he denied, when Pat. made another charge, which made an impression upon the man's countenance, and laid him prostrate. The poor individual picked himself up and called upon the witnesses to accompany him to the Squire's office, which they did'nt do, consequently we lost a pelice case, and the squire some costs. -
Chicago In 1851, this city had but 98 f
mile of Railroad lead into her streets; tha amount of grain exported was then 4? millions bushels. Now the railroad systom of Illinois with which she is connected, extends 2 400 miles, and her population has increased from 31,0(X) to 110,000, end the State of Illinois from 875,000 1,500,000. The export grain trade of Chicago has swelled steadily year by year until iteaalled 15,750,000 bushels list ear, and promises to reach 50,000,000 of bushels In 1856. The import trade in lumber has increased in a corresoondins ratio, and was equal to 5ÜG.0UO,CtXJ feet in 1855,and gives ever' indication of touching 450.000,000 for the yer 18o6. OT The track from Montreal to Toronto is completed, and on Monday last, October 27, was opened for public travel. This will make a continuous line from Portland and Quebec, connecting "the States" and Canada in a band of union of interest at least, if not of much else quite as important to the people of the two countries. next summer uie ruau will be finished to Port Sarnia, on Lake Uoron. The road will then be the most extensive on the whole North American continent an enterprise which fills the ßind with admiration as well as wonder. Gen'. Harrison's House Burned. The Louisville Courier says; The bright light which lit up the heavens so brilliantly on Friday night, denoted the burning, in Jeflersonville, of perhaps the only building of history cal interest in this vicinity. It was the house in which Gen. Wm. H. Harrison lived when he was Governor of the North-Western territory. . 07" Add. II. Sanders, we regret to see, has retired from the Evansville Journal.
