You must look for the cause of defeat to something else. aVl A. 'lribune. Wonderful Escape. A few days ago, as two ladies, one named Barton, the other her, sister, were attempting to cross to Goat Island Niagara Falls, by means of some planks temporarily placed upon the new bridge, the supports gave way, and they were both precipitated from the bridge. Mrs. B. fortunately seized an iron rod connected with the bridge, while her sister, after vain attempts to sustain herself by grasping at Mrs. B.'s dress, was thrown into the raging waters beneath. The plank fell with her, and after Beveral attempts she grasped it. By the mercy of Providence the plank was thrown into the water diagonally with the shore, and the current, which was bearing her so furiously to destruction, drew the lower end of the plank against the bank, when several persons seized it, and after great exertions, finally drew her ashore in a fainting condition. It was a miraculous escape. Mrs. Barton, after clinging to the rod for some time, was lifted from her dangerous situation by some persons who had rushed to the spot. A Fortunate Loss. A gentleman named Melton, who resides in Hampden, Geauga co., Ohio, came to Cincinnati on Friday in pursuit of an errant wife, who had absconded from her home on Tuesday last with an individual named Finh, who left a wife and six children behind him. The faithless woman was accompanied in her flight with her paramour by her two children for she too was a mother but she left a note for her injured husband, informing him that he need not give himself any uneasiness respecting their future fate as they did not belong to him. Mr. Melton arrived in the city too late to catch the fugitives, as they had departed that morning for Chicago; he, however, dispatched an officer after them, who, it is hoped, may catch the Fish. One after noon, during "religious services," und while a "preacher" was in full blast, in the middle of an exhortation, a piouj looking "brother" stepped up to the "stand" or pulpit, and after telling the preacher to "hold up" for a moment, made the following announcement, in a clear, ringing tone, but with the usual Methodistical twang: "Sister Stevens is in tent No. 49; and if brother Roberts is on the ground, she wants the key of her trunk!" At the recent Annu al Exhibition of the Royal Agricultural Society in England, a field locomotive dragged seven plows, connected together in one frame, with considerable ease and speed over quite undulating ground. The boiler, engine, wheels, etc., in short, the whole locomotive, including an endless railway on which it runs to give it a broad, firm bearing on the earth, weighs nine tons, and with steam at sixty pounds (about the usual pressure, by the way, of English locomotives, instead of 110 as with us,) works up to twelve horse power. Ihe fuel used was coal. Curious Intention. A very curious in vention has been made in England. Its ob ject is to manufacture picture frames, and oth er articles of like discnption, out oi bricks; and singularly enough, such an object as this has been and can be successfully accomplished. It is done, as is represented, by reducing pieces of old bricks to powder, mixing this powder with some portion of the tar or reluse of gas works, and then compressing the mixture into suitable moulds.
