C. E. DSEW, Jr., EDITOB. WEDNESDAY MORX1XG, OCTOBER 22 AliAATUKiS ALMA.NAU: H.H. Son Risk....... .6.19 Son Sit.. ....5..0 The Good Cause Again, Stern winter is approaching and those who are able are bcinninx to provide against its in-' clemencies. We say those who are able, for ' we know that there are those among us, de-j tarvin-r ones too. but unfortunate, who are '. 'compelled to see the heaped up loads of fuel ' .i tu. Aaat; 'ed for the homes of comfort, while they them- : i selves turn despairingly to their scanty embers and exhausted store without knowing where to look for the next supply. We do j not conceive that we are beggars, or that we : are imposing any unrighteous tax upon our citizens, when we point to these creatures and ü- fn. aDgiDtiniu in nl r. V,.'. - r.n.nct,; t'.aa -o- -oo.o.wv .v..v...ö The Evansville Benevolent Association has for four successive years labored in their work, , oik knd they are happy and proud to say, that they have met with the hearty co-operation of their fellow citizens. Every concert given by them to aid in raising fund has been pat-! ronizeil with a liberality, creditable to Evans- I Tille and encouraging to the Association. ! The City Board of Councilmen, and Township Trustees have made very liberal contributions to their fund. It has been the means of lightening in a measure the poor tax; it has been the means of lightening infinitely poor hearts. The fund though dispensed with prudence 'and caution is now exhausted. The misfor tune has been heretofore, that their concert enterprises have been de 'erred until so late a period in the season that a great deal of suf fering has existed among the destitute class before an adequate fund was supplied. 'i his year the Association propose to look earlier to the matter. We believe that our citizens feel a pleasure in making a trifling investment for this object. Our young people take a pride in it, and we observed during the last winter, a spirit of emulation in getting up concerts and other enterprises, the proceeds of which weie to be devoted to the aid of the Association. We hope the spirit will increase. No one feels the loss of the mite so contrib uted. "He that give lb. to the poor lendeth to the Lord." The Association propose to give : an -entertainment sometime about the latter part of next month, ond one too in which ptins will be taken to ensure entire satisfaction to all who invest. More of this hereafter. Fine Soap. Messrs. llallock Sc Stoddard are now offering for sale a fine article oP'Transparent Bar Soap." Call and look at it. 07" A number of our citizens leave to-day for the Indianapolis Pair. The crowd will be immense, and we warn those who go, that sleeping places will be scarce. 07" Mrs. Stowe's new novel, "Dred," has been adapted-to the stage, and was produced at the Museum in New York last week. The werk has already met with a sale, second only to "Uncle Tom's Cabin." 0rThe weatherthe past few days has been delightful. The dust along the unwatered streets makes the walking unpleasant, but the sunshine more than compensates for this iuconvenience. 07" There were nine forged checks for amounts ranging from $700 to $3,000, presented at different Banks in Boston in one day. Only one of them was paid. The forgers all escaped detection. fr"3 The stock of susrar in Louisville on Wednesday last was reduced to 1,012 hhds. The stock of molasses is extreme by low, and th price has advanced to 62jc. Sugar ranges from 10 to 12c. fj5" This season our packet facilities will be complete. The St. Louis and Louisville .Hail Company intend to run five boats between those points, and two between Louisville and Memphis. By this arrangement a boat will pass this place every morning for Louisville - aid Cairo. The Rainbow will continue in the Henderson trade, leaving every Wednesday ' and Saturday as heretofore. Fine millinery. Miss Barker has just "Opened afher Millenery establishment on First Street, opposite the Post Office, a beautiful lot of bonnets, nbbens, &c, one of the largest and finest assortments ever offered in this city. Some of the bonnets are really elegant, as we have had an opportunity of observing. Miss Ua ker is always in attendance ready to grati fy the wants of her customers. Riveb. The river is still stationary at this point, but rising above. During the past week the river has risen, seven inches at Cincinnati, and is still slowly rising at that place. A rise of six feet is rerorted in Kanawha. The Pittsburg Journal says that navigation will be restored in a few days, and the packets run ning. Should the river rise in time to prevent cold weather affecting navigation, the amount of business transacted will be immense. The warehouses along the river are crowded with goods awaiting shipment. 0r" The recent loan made by the State of Ohio of $2,400,000 was taken at $103 for $100. The stock of the State of Virginia, ' bearing the same rate of interest was selling at the same time at $92 for $100. fjT" Prof. Larrabee has withdrawn as . preacher from the Methodist Conference,

Coal Oil. As man exhausts the sources of j one of the necessities of life, a substitute is '

kindly revealed to him. The whales pursued into their last hiding places in the Arctic Ocean, had become too scarce to supply the wants of the world for oil, when a new substance was discovered in coal, which is its per-

Thera is another substance obtained during the process, that is . ..... . 'called "para&ne." a beautiful semi-transparent substance, resembling the finest spermaceti from which it is proposed to make candles. The cost of producing these substances from the coal is said to be only 30 cents per gallon The Benzole sells for $1,50. The lubricating (Viril 1?t finiltVl Tint h ftt RO C.PlT tS. We are in the centre of a vast coal region, of various qualities of coal which can j be delivered in Evansville, as cheap '. as this coal can be at Cloverport; and why is not this one of the best points in the country for starting a factory of this new article of cornmerce For ihe journal. Mr. Editob: For the benefit of all concerned I beg you to publish the following. HORS BROOK Sec'y Ag. liort. Society. Oct. 211856: We the undersigned have examined four Fire Engines being all that came under our department, namely, No. 1. Union of Lamasce City. No. 2. Washington of Evansville No. No. 3. Y. America " " 4. Neptune " " and consider the Washington No. 2 entitled to the 1st. prize she having thrown the greatest distance through the same length of ilose (about 50 feet.) In making the above decision we did not take into consideration the size or capacity of the Engines, being governed only by distance : thrown by each machine. J We did not think we could clissify the Engines unless there was a prize awarded to each class. As to the 4 Engines on Trial we consider the Union throws the best column of water to do execution at a fire, therefore we award the 2d: Premium to her as the best working ma chine. In conclusion we would say thai all the Engines were well manned and worked and thinks they all deserve great credit. JOHN IVERSON, HENRY SCHRIBER, GEORGE WOOD. This action renders any further union of the Fremont and Fillmore parties in Pennsylvrnia very improbable. The original Fillmore electoral ticket will be run.
