RLAK.EAlORE.of Gas. U.M.K HAI.K.of Wntwh. Joe Wright and his Extraordinary Labors Selling Willard & 0. to secure his own Election. Got. Wright hasVendered the most efficient service to the Democratic cause in this campaign, and has done much to keep the public miud in Indiana from being debauched by the falsehoods and slanders of the opposition on the slavery question. His labors upon the stump have' been extraordinary, and. cannot fail to have a good effect Cin. Enq. We do not know any man, excepting Willard, who has done more to debauch the public mind in Indiana on the question of slavery, and on political questions generally, than this prince of demagogues, Gov. Wright. The very fact of the Governor of Indiana leaving his high official position to "stump the State" in the foulest political fight, so far as his own party is concerned, that ever stirred up the dregs of bad passions, und brought political rascals to the surface, is in itself enough to "debauch" the State. But when it is recollected that this demagogue in a high place has done this for a Belfish purpose of his own, and without even the pretence of disgracing his position for his party's benefit that he is stumping the State in an endeavor to secure a Democratic majority in the Legislature, so that he may become an U. S. Senator if the public mind is not debauched it is no fault of Joe Wright's. He at all events illustrates that there is at least an individual " public mind" most grossly debauched. The EnquiTer says " his labors upon the stump have been extraordinary." They certainly have been. Even the efforts of Willard himself have not been more extraordinary than Gov. Wright's Willard's labors this canvass have been extraordinary for their reckless impudence, for their bold rascality, for their utterly unparalleled assumptions and presumptions. Wright's labors have been quite as extraordinary for their oily, greasy, soft soap plausibility, yet most consummate hypocricy; for their gross de ceptions on every question he hasdiscussed; for their misstatements and misreprejentations as to the positions of his opponents. On record more of an Abolitionist than those he styles abolitionists, he has stumped the State sup porting the pro-slavery party and the Pierce Administration having recommended a stringent Prohibitory Liquor Law, and signed and approved the late obnoxious Prohibitory Law, he has everywhere abused those who supported that law, and meanly tried to escape the responsibility of his own connection with it having wronged and insulted this community, and even called upon his head the severe con demnation of his party organ and friends in J this city, he has dared come here, and with that oily hypocricy peculiarly his own, attempt to teach this people their duty, and how they can best elevate him again to office and pow r. - A" h pocrit in religion and a demagogue in politics,1 he has no such immaculate character as to sustain itself and the dignity of his office, when he prostitutes that office to the lowest party purposes, and basely uses its influence to carry out objects of no more exalted character than his own selfish aggrandizement. If any Democrat thinks Gov. Wright is honestly working for the success of the Democratic State Ticket, we tell him he is mistaken. He don't care a fig for Willard nor for any man on his ticket. His whole object is to secure a Democratic majority in the Legislature, so that he may be elected one of the U. S. Senators. We have before us now a private letter to which we wish to call the particular attention of Democrats. This letter says : " There is a shrewd game being played by Joe Wright, Dr. Fitch and Jno. L. Robinson. Wherever they go a3 soon as they leave their particular friends offer to vote for Judge Morton, if they can get the People's party to vote for the Democratic candidates for the Legislature and Senate. So you may see that this trio of Old Liners. Wright & Co., are wil ling to sell Willard if by so doing they can get themselves elected to the U. S. Senate." Who doubts the truth of this ? They would not only sell Willard but the whole Democratic State Ticket and the Democratic party itself, to securs their own elevation to power. This precisely accords with their political characters. They don't care a copper for their par ty, only so far as that party is necessary to place and keep them in office. Their only hope of office now, is to secure a Democratic majority in the Legislature. They will sell Willard to affect this. The Democracy of the State are being sold by these office-seeking demagogues. They will find after the election, that we have spoken the truth. Democratic votes, under the dictation of these men, will be swapped off to elect members of the Leg islature, at the expense of the Democratic State Ticket. That is the game of Joe Wright, whose labors have been so very extraordinary

As the weather grows cooler, the political canvass waxes hotter, and men are busy, working for themselves or their r . , , ., .. , , friends. As the time narrows down toward the election, the crowds on street corners are more excitable: the street politicians talk louder and faster, and bets of divers and sundry articles are consummated Our cood neonla articles are consummated. There is a prodigious expenditure of breath,
& prodigal waste of argument good, bad and much as it seems possible, from the sentiment indifferent, an intense anxiety to know "the n Washington, either that he may be acquitresult, but that is all. The election over, and j ted' ?ot receive the punishment which im-
t-, ... ... . .. , . . , , Evansville will settle down in its old ways, and our people will resume their business as j though the election bad never been. But un- i til that time, go where you will, you will find nots o. men in noisy discussion.. You can't stop them. Every man has up steam, and if it is not upon the Slavery question, it is upon : some other equally exciting topic. Each one knows how every Statj in the Union will cast its vote, and each one has down a majority for his own candidate. The Republicans are certain that Fremont will carry New York; the Buchaniers are positive that the- Empire State will go for their man, while Americans know that Fillmore will beat both the other candidates. After the election, the Fretnonters and Democrats will look back and see how wofully they were mistaken, while Fillmore men will have the satisfaction of saying 'We told you so 1 " Can a Mothfe foeget heu Son?" The accounts from every part of the State of New York are most encouraging to the Fillmore men. New York has always been ready to do honor to her favorite son, and we cannot doubt but that 6he will cast her thirty-two electoral votes for RliLIard Fillmore. The triumphal march of Mr. Fillmore through New York, on his return home, was an evidence of his popularity not to be mistaken. It was not the arranged and formal reception of politicians working for spoils, but an expression of public opinion; the people of Ne w York turning out to do honor to their fellow citizen. The Hood of Abolition documents poured upon New Tr , ... . . ,. , , ! York, and the expiring exertions of office holders who are to be turned out next March will not be able to give the State either to Fremont or Buchanan. A mother cannot forget her son. New York will not desert the man who of all others is her first choice for the Presidency. Escape of a Horse Thief Yeager, alias Hunter alias James, who was arrested on last Saturday by Marshal Evans, for horse stealing, escaped from custody on last Sunday morning between one and three o'clock. He was therefore placed in a room, in the third story of the Washington Hotel to remain overnight, n charge of the owner of the house, the dep uty sheriff of Pike county and two other persons. Handcuffs were placed on his wr.sts, and the prisoner was considered secure. Du ring the night the prisoner "in a quiet sort of a way" let himself out of the window of his room down to the pavement on Third street, by means of two sheets and a quilt tied to gether. So quiet were his movements that his keepers slept undisturbed. After landing on Terra firma it is supposed that he donned the habiliment which he had thrown down be fore his descent, proceeded to the room of his boarding house where there were also four persons sleeping, carried his trunk into the yard, rifled it of its valuables, then went to a tailor shop where he had some clothes &c. and them shook the dust of Evansville from his feet. It is supposed that he had friends in waiting below when he let himself outrf of the window, who assisted him in being reliev ed of Lis shambles. The Clerks at Washington Taxed. A special correspondent of the New York Tri bune, writing from Washington on the first inst., says that the Clerks in the Treasury Department were notified on receiving their monthly pay for services in September, that they were assessed in the sum of about ten par cant, on their salaries, to be used for electioneering purposes in the State of Pennsylvania. " All who refused to pay were required to state the fact under their own signatures. This the correspondent avers he had from a reliable source. OCT The London Globe announces that there are no less than 40 sets of chambers now to let in the Inner Temple and 33 in the Middle Temple, and that the entries of students are about one-fifth of what they were ten years ago. The calls to the bar have fallen oif to a mere nothing, compared with what they were formerly. Whereas the Middle Temple used to call a few years ago from 120 to 125 or 130 a year, 20 is now about the average, and even this number shows symptoms of disease.

of the United State Congress: Your petitioners, citizens of California, beüeving that an appeal to Hon. P. T. Herbert, one of our representatives -in Congress, to re- .. It would do you good to go about Washington, as I have done for the last two days, and see the change that 'has been' wrought in the minds of the unwearied Treasury cuis who pull at the nursing fountuin-head of patronage, power and plunder. One and a native of Virginia, too, by thunder! who, one week since, perfectly scounted the idea of Fremont being elected, has Ailed on a friend of mine not an officeholder, but a "Black Republican" and told him that he felt decidedly moved by the spirit within him (the Maine election news!) to wish (or Fremont's election, and he wished to have his position noted down; so, when he was elected, my friend must stand by him and see that he was not turned out of office! O, Virginia! Mother of states and Statesmen! how are thy sons degenerated! If this is doubted, I can give the mart's name. Two more natives of the same State were heard, not two weeks ago, to say that no Southerner, no Virginian, with a particle of self-respect or patriotism, could accept office under Fremont, if he were elected. Two days ago on being spoken to about it, they denied, in the presence of the very gentleman that heard them, ever having made the remark. Hash. Correspondent. Fillmore Barbeoue at Enterprise. The Barbecue at Enterprise, esterday was largely attended, and the greatest good feeling prevailed, there were delegations present from Rockport, Newburgh and Owensboro, of sanguine and enthusiastic Fillmore men. We suppose there were 1,500 or 2,U00 persons on the grounds, listening to the speeches. The meeting wasab'y addressed by Judge Yeaman and Mr. Botts, of Kentucky, in favor of Aniericunism. The supply of provisions was very a aiple, and dons up in the best style. Several songs were sung by the People's Glee Club, and everything passed off pleasantly. Rockport Adv. Evansville Journal. The editor of this paper says that he saw a flag borne in the Democratic procession in this city, last Tuesday, with fifteen stars upon it, representing the fifteen Slave States. We say that lit 1 le Add lies. There was no such flag in our procession and he knows it. 'lerre Haute Jour. Mr. Cookerly can very easily ascertain that. the lie belongs to a much binqer man than , , , , , . . . . Ada banders, bv inquiring of Mr, McLean, his . " immediate predecessor, or of Col. Drew, of this city, good Democratic authority both. We pointed out the flag to them, and asked them to count the stars. i The Louisville and Portland canal bridge injunction has been removed, and the old stone bridge, for so many years an inconvenience to steamboatmen will be immediately torn down. Speaking of the improvements now going on at the canal the Louisville Courier says: The improvements in the canal are progressing rapidly, and when completed it wiil be equal to a new one. An immense amount of work has been dune on it and a vast amount yet remains to be done, before it will be completed. In some places the solid rock along the bottom has be excavated, and when ths work is done the canal will have an average increase depth of twelve inches. Speakino ix Union TowNSHip.-James C. Veatch, Esq.r will address the citizens of Union Township this evening at 7 o'clock. Mr. Veatch arrived here Saturday evening, in good health and fine spirits. He bears the labors of the campaign nobly, and ..is sanguine in his hopes of success. He certainly deserves success and is fightiig like a man to obtain it. We trust he will have a good crowd in old Union this evening. River. The river is falling very slowly with about 19 inches on French Island. At Cincinnati on Saturday, the river was at a stand; weather wet. We confidently look for a rise this month. The water is so low on the Portland and New Albany bars that even the ferry boats up there cannot make their regular trips, and passengers frequently make the passage in skiffs. 0?"The Detroit Advertiser contains the names of two hundred and fifty Democrats, of that city, who appeal to their old associates in the tate of Michigan, to come out from among the foul party called "locofoco."
