Those who are first to say he can't be elected, prefer j him in their hearts to any other man before the people for the Presidency, but urge that he "can't be elected" as an excuse for voting for one of his opponents. If universal popularity, and rapidly increasing strength in every State in the Union, afford any evidence, we shall think he can be elected. If those but vole for ; him who really prefer him, we say he will be , elected. News from every quarter evidences J the fact, that hosts of thoss who at first, und r , the plea that "Fillmore can't be elected," were j arraying themselves against him, are now determining to at least give him the benefit of their votes, and wash their hands of the re tponsibility of his defeat, if defeated he must be. Every man who honestly prefers Fillmore, should act as though Fillmore can be elected. He should not on'y cease to array himself in opposition to Fillmore, but he should come out. boldly for Fillmore, and use all the influence in hia power in nrging others to do the same.' This is his duty as a patriot and as a good citizen. The cause of Fillmore is in no manner connected with sectionalism. It is right and just. Those who prefer the man cannot certainly object to the principles of the man they cannot certainly object to a repe tition of his late glorious administration. We hope to hear no more of this "he can't be tlected." ; The New York Express reminds those who ay "Fillmore can't be elected,"of the prospects of Gen. Taylor directly after he was r.oininat-d-The first sixty days after Gen. Taylor's nomination, in 1848, he could not Lave earned a single Northern State. He was denounced as a slaveholder ixiA the slaveholding was a fact and it was added by the Black Republicans of that day, that he was sold to tue öoutn, ana would give trie JNortn no chance just what is said now of Fillmore. Tha Buffalo "National" Convention met. Martin Van Buren and John Francis Adam were put on the course. A State Convent. on met at Utica. John A. Dix was nom nated for Governar. Things looked so squally for most of us Northern conservative white men, that many among us thought Niggerism was in the ascendant, and that the old White vs had no chance. The sober, second thought of New England, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and the West began to be developed not even till late in September, and it was only in October that thought begun to act. In 30 days the canvass was over and decided '"the slaveholder' 'fiold-to-the-South" man with Millard Fillmore on the ticket, earned all before him. This sober, second thought in these free States, is yet to come again, and to begin to come in the coming September and in Octol-er we shall see very like what we saw in 1848 the general rally of all conservative men to Millard Fillmore. 07" The Enquirer of yesterday is particularly felicitous in its treatment of opponents. Jas. G. Jones, Esq., who has heretofore passed as a prominent and very respectable citizen of Evansville, is alluded to in the vilest terms. John Ingle, Jr., who has done more for Evansville than any other man or two men in the city, who has never been a partizan, and who tands second to no other individual among us aa a man, a gentlemfiD. and a good citizen, is stigmatized as a "renegade Englishman." Hall's whole object is to get votes for Sheriff. Is it possible the Democratic party has sunk o low that to recommend himself to that par tj for votes, to seeure a responsible office, a man must publish himself a rillian ? What else is this man doing ? He is even dastard enough to use his own columns to abuse his opponent for the Sheriffality. That is a deepness below the ordinary depth of meanness. 0$T Preston S. Brooks, during a late speech in Columbia, S. C, explained the intimation made by him in his speech, on resigning his seat in the U. S. House of Representatives', wherein he had said that it was in his power to begin a revolution, thus: What he meant was that, had he during the " debate on his expulsion, walked upand slapped the face of the prominent aan of the Black Republican party, a storm would have been raised which would hava ended only in the hall of the House being drenched in blood. We think the first result of Mr. Brooks' slap would have been his dismission from the presence of the assembled House at the point of boot-toes. He is the last man, however, who would strike an equal where he had any chance f resistance. CCr It is stated that there is a probability of the entire fleet of the General Screw Steam Shippi ng Company being purchased at once by the Kassian government.
For tli Journal. Mr. Editor : I w as one of the parties the other day to a
little incident, which, at this time, is part'culurly worthy of notice. Meeting an old friend, the conversation turned upon the election.

Why, sir, he is one of the best men in our county ; sober, industrious and reliable in every particular. Why, sir," continued the old man, " if we were to throw aside such men as Veatch for one like Lockhart, a man that hasn't diawn a sober breath for twenty years, what inducement would i we present to the boys of the county, to make men of themselves ? Yes, sir, I will vote for Jim Veatch. Give me the boy that has scrambled up the ladder of his own make. I have always heard they were the test men, and I believe it." These, fellow-citizens, are sentiments coming from an old farmer of Spencer county, that do honor to ths man. In it there is a
lecture upon politics, upon morals, upon edu- provement of national highways; by removing dtion, that stands unrivaled in the record of: or softening of the asperities of local prejudice; i i . rru- l r r a ' by stimulating the productive powers of agric.v.l history. The Publie School House. Much unnecessary alarm has been created amongst our citizens, in regard to tne condition of our school house. The Trustees felt that the reports in circulation were groundless, but with a viewof quieting the fears of parents and guardians, applied to the City Council for the appointment ot a committea of mechanics t j examine and report on the subject. Tha Council appointed Messrs. Hunnsl, Hugo and Kesler, all competent men, and below we give the report: The undersigned appointed by the City Council, to examine the strength and safety cf our school house, beg leave to report that they have thoroughly examined the building, and consider the same ia good condition and safe. Feancis Kesler, Wm. Honnel, J. T. Hugo. Evansville Sept. 10, 1856. Fillmore Electoral Ticket in Iowa. The following is the Fillmore and Donelson electoral ticket in Iowa: Senatorial John P. Cook, I. K. Horish. First District Isiah Booth. Second District S. C. McAchran. Mr. Cook was formerly a Whig member of Congress from Iowa. In the Southern part of the State Fillmore men are quite strong, and it is thought will poll seven or eight thousand votes. New Arrival of Clothixg. Mr. Lobenstine has just received and is now opening, a large lot of Clothing, made in the most fashionable styles, and of the best material. These are worthy of the attention of those wanting something very nice and fashionable. Mr. L. has also a line lot of Gentlemeri's Furnishing Goods of every description. See his advertisement. JC?" The Columbus (Georgia) Times, one of the most influential Democratic papers in that State, thus testifies to the accessions to Fillmore in that section : " We are frequently asked if there is any truth in the alleged reaction in favor of Fillmore at the South. Candor compels us to say there is." Arabia Sunk. The steamer Arabia was sunk last Friday evening, in the Missouri river one mile below Parkville, in fifteen feet water. She was going up with a good trip. Her cabin furniture and a 1 ttle freigh, were saved. She was owned by Capt. Terrell, her commander, and Mr. Boyd, clerk. Southern Education. Bishop Polk, of Louisiana, has addressed a circular to the Bishops of nine of the Southern States, on the "necessity of organizing a system of Southern education, and building up Southern religious institutions, as part of a general system of defence of which the South is daily growing more in need." fj7" The advertisemeut headed " Warning" in yesterday's paper, and relating to the Rochester Nursery, should have been signed Decker & Kramer. The names were accidentally omitted, and the responsibility of the advertisement belongs exclusively to them. OCrlt is no longer correct to say "the height of fashion." Wnen ladies wish to convey the dea that any of their acquaintance is at all bien mise, they affirm that "she was dressed in the full breadth of the fashion." fCJohnD. Defrees, Esq., of Indianapolis, has addressed two letters to Jas. B. Clay, They are scathing. Wo regret not having room for them.
Wordi of Trati. We call the attention of every citizens to
the following extract from an address to the JWhig3 of Missouri, just published in the Mis- ! 'sourj Republican. It contains truth indis-j 'ptable truth, and truth that should sink to i been settled; all former factions-had been quiet ed into repose, if not subdued into peace, and everything seemed to promise a long continuance of law, order and prosperity, (the natural result of a wise and conservative Whig policy.) But this brijrht prospect wa3 dimmed, aa it were, with industrious haste, k single term of a Democratic President has changed the whole scene. Instead of moderate laws, passed in a spirit of concession and compromise, j to soothe the wounded feelings of opposing parties , we see extravagant theories, reduced, with indecent haste, to the form of statutes and passed in a spirit of conquest and defiance as if for tho very purpose of lighting up anew the extinguished firebrands, and reviving and exasperating the quarrels which had been settled, as we fondly hoped forever, by the wise and moderate measures of the last administration. Instead of a prudent and moderate home policy, wisely designed for the present and permanent good of our country, by facilitating commercial and social intercourse, in trie linhome government in all its great elements of peaceful progress, and ambitiously straining foreign acquisition thus offending the -vri otx.'I a vnti nrr t ia i in Tr-kij vr tin.l f k f dt i t fc, thus" habiiually sacrificing tne home interests of tt e country to the mad 'ambition of grasping foreign territory, which, when acquired, they have not tho wisdom and courage to govern. At home, instead of peace, order and reciprocal confidence, With the energies of all harmoniously directed to national ends, we behold peace and confidence destroyed, disorder triumphant, and mutual jealously and hatred openly avowed in the halls of Congress and throughout the cpuntry. And these bad elements have formed themselves into parties, and have not been ashamed, (such is the madno:ssofthe times,) to call theoiselves by the sectional titles of North and South. We give it as our deliberate opinion, that the Democratic party, as now organized and administered, is justly responsible for all these evils. A Mass, but no Blows. Among others, attendants to the Buchanier Battle ground Rally, was a delegation from Toledo, Ohio, of something less than a hundred, which included an Artillery Company, with one piece of ordinance music, &c. This delegation came here at an expense, as they say, of about $2,UUO, expecting to have a good time and be cordially received by the old liners of this county and State. They arrived here on Tuesday evening, and pitched their tents on the Battle Ground, but were not favored with any reception from the Committea of Arrangements, and hud no attention whatever shown them. On Wednesday morning they opened the exerc.s.- by firing a salute of thirteen guns, and reported thmselves, through the tion. Jas. B. Steduian, of Toledo, to John Pettit, the President of the Convention, aud said they were ready, through their Artillery Company, to fire such salutes as the Convention might desire. Pettit replied in his own peculiar style, that ''he did'nt care an-thing about them, and wished the cannon in the river." They made complaint of the language and Pettit retracted. On yesterday, at what they considered an appropriate time, . he Artillery Company commenced firing another salute. Pettit posted the Marshal of the day off in hot haste to "stop the d d firing," and characterized the Toledo delegation as a "set of drunken row dies," or words to that effect. The members of the delegation were informed of this lan guage, and tiecame considerably excited. Hon. James B. Stedman, ex-M. C, mounted the cannon and addressed the Toledo delegation and a couple of hundred other listeners. He came down hot and heavy on the "old brass p ece," and said that Benton had told the truth when he characterized Pettit as a "dirty dog." Dodd, the old line candidate for Auditor of State, and Lew Wallace tried to smooth the matter over, but only half succeeded, and the Toledo delegation struck their tents and left the ground rather disgusted with their expedition. La. Jour. A Good "Take off" on Clay Early yesterday forenoon a small crowd at the Bramble House corner were gathered around a plain looking countryman who was reading from a small hand bill or circular, containing in substance the letter of " J. D. D.," as published in the Journal a few days since. The letter, as our readers well remember, is j addressed to James B. Clay, the " degenerate son ot a noble aire," who now fraternizes wuh the "hounds" who pursued his illustrious Father to the very threshold of the grave. As the countryman was reading, Mr. Clay, who is stopping at the Br.imble, hearing his name spoken, approached the crowd and interrupting the reader, inquired what it was. "Why," said the countryman, (who, of course, had no idea that he was in the presence of the distinguished gentleman himself.) "it's a mighty good thing on that prodigal, Jim Clay, whoN been bought up by the old liners to ctmi over and help carry Indiana. It's d d good," said he. warming up with the subject. Clay straightened himself up pompously and with an annihilating emphasis and imperious gesture replied, "I AM JAMES B. CLAY, Slli !" The countryman, nothing abashed by the "plantation manner" of lhe august individual in whose presence he thus unexpectedly found himself, coolly surveyed him from head to foot, and placing his thumbs in his vest, threw himself back a la Clay, and assuming as near as possible his tone and gesture, responded : " THE H L YOU ARE ! and quietly added, " I had no idea the old stock was quite so near run out " The manner of the countryman was inimitable, and tlie joke so broad that the whole crowd, old liners and all, joined in the laugh and Clay beat a retreat. La. Jour. OT Weather yesterday warm and windy, and streets getting dusty again.
GSrEven the Pennsylvanian, Mr. Buchan an's chief organ in Ins own State, has evidently no confidence in the State's goirg for hiir. It makes a most piteous and pathetic appeal to its friends to rouse themselves from their lethargy, telling them thatotherwi.se the Stale will certainly be lost. It asks mournfully
und despond ingly, "shall we have the m utification and disgrace of being defeated in our own stronghold, the- banner State of the unter rifled?" Unquestionably they will have that very mortification and disgrace. They cannot, if the signs of the times are reliable, carry Fennsvlvania.
