The meeting will be addressed by Jas G. Jones, Esq., and probably others. His subject, as we have before stated, will be that portion of the American platform which alludes to foreigners and Catholicä. There are mis taken ideas as to what the real principles of the American party are as to foreigners and Catholics, although the platform has been pub lished everywhere. Mr. Jones will no doubt clearly state the position of the Americana on these subjects, and those particularly interested should hear him. Whig National Convention. The Whigs of the Union will hold a Convention at Balti more on the 17th inst. A full representation of the Whigs of the Union is desired. We un derstand by a private letter, that the Whigs of every District in Kentucky will send Dele - gates to this Conventiion. The decision of. f this Convention, as to the position of the ; Whigs of the Union during the canvass, will ; be looked for with much interest. A Mistake. The paragraph we copied yesterday from the Vincennes Gazette relative to j the Rev. Mr. Terrel having received severe in--juriesbya railroad accident at Princeton, is . an error. The person injured was Mr. Reed, of Meroni, Indiana. He has been for many years one of the principal business men ofthat place, and is an estimable man and a good citiiZen. We regret to hear of his misfortune, but ' , hope he may recover. Grand Fillmore and Doaelson Demonstration. A Union of Hearts and II : 11(1. a Union of The Cincinnati Times of Thursday contains three and a half columns of fine type, giving an account of the great Union Celebration at that city the day previous. Although no notice was given of the demonstration except in the r ill more papers of the West, the number of strangers in the citv yesterday is variously estimated from '' . - . 20,000 to 25,000. They were not gathered ' ' c together at any one point, so that a fair est im a. iL . 1 f ation could be made. Without further comment, we proceed to detail the proceedings as furnished by our reporters. THE PROCESSION. The procession was the first demonstration of the day, and ordered to take place at two ; o'clock P.M. It came near being a failure from two causes. First, it was not ordered until Monday evening and not published un- j til day before yesterday ; consequently the ' , Je ,: . i r illmore organization of the city and townships had no time to prepare for the demon stration, and only a small portion of them appeared in the procession at all. Jn the second place, the delegations from abroad were not notified of the demonstration, and were unable to concentrate in season. While the pro- . cession was moving in one part of the city, thousands lrom abroad were hunting for it ! Again, the Southerners who had concentrated in Covington did not reach this side of the river until near 5 o'clock, through some mis understanding of the committee of the arrangenients. At 4 o'clock the procession, small as it was, commenced moving. It proceeded through the route laid out until it reached the Times office, where it met the procession from Cov - inzton, when the two were united and niaicned up town again At the head were Cant. A. E, Jones, Grand Marshal, and his aids. They were followed by a car containing the I Ttnf innnfi I l-Catiil tin rl liüTin cnmpl v nonr! tnrf i
with flags. Next came an immense delegation; recently made this city a visit, and is desirous on horseUack, from 13oone county, Kentucky, 'of securing a share of business from Evansville followed by the Covington and Newport Clubs, 1 and this region. He is spoken of as a prompt and delegations from Louisville, Frankfort and ;and reliabIe business man, and gives the very
oiner oouinern cities. i lie v were accompa nied by several bands of music, and had a number of display wagons. Among the mottoes displaced were, " I would rather be right than 1'resident," and " Kentucky will stand by the Union at all hazards." In this portion of the procession there was an organization numbering largely of young Kentuckians who will cast their first votes for Fillmore. Following the Kentuckians, were a thou sand or more from Indiana, and the interior of Ohio. Next came the Central Club of Hamilton county, preceded by Menter's American Cornet Band, and a guard, arrayed in the Continental uniform. They were followed by several ward clubs. Then came the " Ninth Ward Boys," who declared themselves "all right for Fillmore," and who displayed several banners. Following was a large delegation from the townships, headed by a four horse wagon "chuck full" of enthusiastic Fillmore men. A long string of wagons, carriages, &c, all decorated with flags, brought up the rear of the procession. Under all the disadvantages in its formation, it kept swelling in numbers until it was near two miles long. The sidewalks of the streets through which the procession paraded were almost blocked up with people, from whom cheer after cheer went up for Fillmore and Donelson, and were heartily responded to by those in the procession. When the two divisions of the column met in front of the Times office, the streets presented a sea of heads in every directiion, and the cheers for Fillmore and the Union were deafening. As the procession passed along the levee the scene was a magnificent one. Not less than 10,000 people were assembled on the wharf, while the windows and roofs of the houses were filled or covered with people, many of them ladies, .bach delegation or organization was received with cheers, and the waving of handkerchiefs and hats. The houses fronting the levee were mostly decorated with flags, which added to the magnificence of the scene. The Kentuckians were escorted to the Walnut street ferry, and passed over the river. The remaining portion of the procession were marched to the public landing and dismissed. THE CEREMONY UPON THE BIVEK. This took place at six o'clock in the even Inrr cVinrtl u- ftpr thn Hifimißsarnf this nrnf oJ . . . f sion. A rope was suspended irom snore to shore, and from this, directly over the center I of the river, hung an immense national ilag, ! n.-it'n TTMIOr ntrfin it.. The rone was hnrrllv 1 perceptible, and the proud flag, whoas lower edge almost touched the water, seemed to sustain itself in the air. Three floating batteries were stationed in the river, the whole surface of which was alive with sailing and row boats, gaily decorated with flags. At b o'clock the teamers Lhampion and HartfordCity pushed out into the stream, the former from the Kentucky and the latter from the Ohio shore. Both were prettily decorated with flags. On board of the Champion were the Continental Band, a number of distinguished Kentuckians, and fifteen young ladies representing the Southern States. On the Hartford City were Menter's Band some two hundred persons, from various Northern States, and sixteen young ladies representing the Northern States. The Times gives the names of these ladies, and the State each one represented. As the boats pushed out from the shores the bands struck up the national air of "Hail Columbia."' The river side was at the time cov ered with dense masses of people, cheering and waving their handkerchiefs, and presenting an animated and magnificent scene. Both boats turned their bows up stream, and slowly proceeded onward some distance apart. As they reached the Union flag they floated slowly toward each other, and soon were side by side. Cheers went up from those on board, which was followed by a swell of voices from the two shores really indescribable. To those on the boats the scene was one of extraordinary intest. The banks of the river on the Kentucky shore were lined with people. On the Ohio side, the wharf seemed a sea of heads, while the steamers M the landing and the houses fronting the river were black with people. -And such rltouts as followed this union of the North and South we have seldom heard. At this interesting moment tb batteries lsp poured
forth their salutes, while the bands sent forth "Yankee Doodle" to mingle with the din.
Col. Jones, of Ky., made an address when the boats touched, which was answered by E. P. Morton, Esq., of Ohio. The Sisters of the South then crossed to the Hartford City, and formed a circle with the Sisters of the North around a guard of four, dressed in the continental dress, and bearing a National ßajr. The Union was complete! This ceremony, witnessed from the shores. called forth renewed and prolonged dmonstrations of enthusiasm. The Sisters of the 0 .. . , ., , ., x, .. . .
