Ilia ltevleiv of Willardand hU ".tew. Xturg Wime.' Crescent Hall was crowded last Thursday Tening to hear Judge Baker, candidate for Lt GoTernor, speak upon National Politics, and giro, some facts relative to those two "worthies" known as Willard and Smith Gavitt. The load and enthusiastic applause with which bis severest remarks were received, exhibited probably better than anything else could have done, how much deserved thev were, and how emphatic ia the condemnation of this community of the course of Willard and the individual who consented on one occasion to act publicly as Willard's miserable toady. We mit ft report of all other parts of J udge Baker's remarks except such as relate to these men. . It is known to al! our readers, that Conrad Baker was insulted and slandered at a meeting of the Democracy of Xewburg on the 19th f this month. Then and there, Willard had the impudence to call upon Gavitt to prove that Judge Baker had in the course of a certain trial before Judge Iglehart, in May, 1855, declared himself in favor of a Higher Law, paramount to the constitution and in conflict therewith. Smith Gavitt, the Sheriff of this county, before that meeting, and for the mere paltry purpose of affording Willard a little political capital, and perhaps to gratify his own feelings of personal hatred, declared solemnly that Judge Baker had made use of this remark. Had Gavitt made this statement here, it would have deserved no notice, for here Judge Baker's simple word of Contradiction would outweigh the Sheriff's Mth. Judge Baker very properly remarked in his speech, he had no doubt Willard could have proved any statement he made or might inake. by precisely the same witness. We regTot that it has become necessary for a gentleman occupying the private and public po&ition of Judge Baker, to give this Newburg witness any further notoriety. He is politically dcad stink. To touch it, is to handle unclean things. Judge Baker read the following certificates which prove Willard and his witness dastardly Msjficrs. and will forever put to rest the charge they concocted and published ' 1 to the world together: . "Sometime In May, 1835, a colored raaa named Wui. Llenry ulias Washington White, was brought before me on a writ of habeas corpus, issued against John S. Gavitt, Sheriff of Vanderburgh county, ana Win. tioiaen, nis Deputy; J udge Baker appearing for the petitioner, and Jas. E. Blythe for Messrs. Gavitt nd Holden, who. on their return claimed to bold the negro as a fugitive slave by virtue of tome (telegraphic dispatches, which were attached to the return. J udge Baker moved the . diuchaTg of the prisoner, aud waived the penig, and Mr. Iii vibe proposed to read the case of Priggs vs. Pennsylvania, in 1G Peters, but '-tpan cay statement, that 1 was familiar with Oi.mui and an intimation that I recognized ihe principles therein announced, he did -: et read at, but asked that the oegro might be held in custody "his alleged massier should Arrive. 19th Section of the act, reads as follows: Whenever the President of this company shall file with the Governor a list of the subscribers to Btck in said company, with the amount of stock of each subscriber and shall add to such list his affidavit that said subscrilrs have subscribed for fifty thousand dollars of stock in said company, and that in his opinion, the same is good and collectable, and that said subscribers have paid to said corporation, five thousand dollars, on account of said subscriptions, then it shall be the duty of the Governor, within ten days to issue his' proclamation declaring said corporation fully j organized; and that said corporation, is fully authorized to take possession of the New Albany and Vincennes Mc'Adamized Road, and then said corporation shall be fully empowered to take possession of, occupy and use the New Albany and Vincennes McAdamized Road, from New Albany to Vincennes, ami all the rights and privileges, heretofore belonging to the State of Indiana in regard to said McAdamized Road, from said New Albany to Vincennes, together with the gates and houses erected for gate keeeper-s, tie, and the same are hereby transferred to, and vested in said cor poration." Thus was the road which cost the State $718,741 06, yielding an annual revenue of over $12,500, given away to ASHBEL Jr. WILLARD and others. But who submitted this bill, which subsequently became a law, to the Legislature ? Let us see. See "Journal ofthe House of Representatives" for 1850-51, page 417. . Mr. Willard, from a select committee, made the following report: Mr. Spfakek: The select committee to whom was referred the petition of citizens relative to the Vincennes and New Allaay macadamized road, have requested me to report the accompanying bill and recommend its passage: No. 285. A bill to incorporate the New Albany and Vincennes plank road company, which was read a first time, the rule was then suspended, the bill read a second time and ordered to be engrossed. . This is the history ofthe affair, and the bill was put through in real clap-trap style, and one of the best improvements of the State of Indiana given to Willard and others! On the 19th of December, 1851, the Paoli Eagle, now a supporter of this man Willard, published the following: The New Albany Ledger, and some other papers are urging the nomination of Mr. Wil lard. of New Albany, as a cindidate for Lieut. Governor. We do not know how Mr. W1 lard will take in other parts of the Statä, but we know he will not take well in this section. No man tJiut is connected with the New Albany and l(H(MwiSlDLh will receive a very pood vote from people interested in the road. Mr Willard was one ot tne prune movers in that transaction, and he made a snug Utile fortune off of the people, without its costing him one cent. It wiil be the better iiolicy of the Democracy to let him remain a private citizen. If he slvou!d receive the noxnination he will 1 a se rious drawback upon our ticket ia this part of the State. At our next election we will have a large number of oflieers ta elect, and it is all important that the Conventtoa aJaoukl select the very best men we have in our party as candidates men that will not be a weight upon the party. We hope all Old Line in this settlement willexamine tfve record1 and if,accordingto Deai ocratic authority, Willard was a SW1NÜDEU in 1851, what is he now Whatever he may be, he is not the 'man who should receive the votes of honest men. or of truthful and respect able es, for an office which sliould be filled by a man above all suspicion ia personal integrity and honor. Evansvllle Commercial College. The next session of this excellent and popular Commercial Institution will open onMonday, September 1st, and as we presume with an unusual full list of pupils. Young gentlemen can, however, enter the College at any time, as each pupil is taught separately. There
is no similar college in the west where young men can obtain a more thorough proficiency in Commercial education, a knowledge of Book Keeping in all its details, &c, than in this College. Mr. Behm, the Principal, is an old teacher, thoroughly experienced in his business, and devotes his whole time to his pupils instead of turning them over to indolent and uninterested assistants, as is too often the case at other Commercial Colleges. There are scores of 3'oung men now employed in counting rooms, and many merchants at the heads of business houses, who are practical testimonials to the superiority ol Mr. Behm's system of instruction and to his own merits as a teacher. We commend this institution to the attention of those who wish to obtain a thorough and practical knowledge of Book Keeping. Mr. Behm's system is pre-eminently a practi cal one. He does not teach from books, but he opens and conducts business with each pupil, as it is done in business houses of dif ferent kinds thus qualifying the pupil when he obtains his Diploma, to step into the counting room, and assume its practical duties. It is useless to enlarge upon the value of a thorough knowledge of Book Keeping. "Every young man who intends engaging in active business, will find this knowledge if not indispensible at least of high importance while to many young men it will open what has be come a Profession, with a sure means of ob taining a livelihood, and in ii-iclfa stepping stone to a higher position in the mercantile world. Mr. Behm has just issued his Annual Cata logue, containing lists of his pupils at present, and of those who have graduated at his insti tution, with much useful information to those who are considering the subject of entering upon a Commercial course. Copies of this catalogue can bo obtained by addressing Mr. Behm. IlllaoU Correspoadenee. Mount Carmel, 111., Aug. 25, 185ß. Dear Sakaebs : I have been through the counties of White, Edwards, Lawrence, liichland, aud part of Clay and Wabasli, in this State, and find with unfeigned gratification that the Fillmore and Donelson men are much more numerous than from report I was led to beiieTf! they were. They are organized into clubs, and hare speeches and pole raisings in every town, and even at many cross roads. The dd Liaers too, axe well organized, but we do not find that bitterness of feeling existing between these two parties here that we do in Indiana. The discussions are characterized by courteous and respectful speeches p;ood sense and reason are substituted for villifscation and abuse. j The Fremouters occasionally 6tir up their brethren, call a meeting, aud give the Old Liners '"particular thunder," though in a respectful and 4ignied manner. At one of these meetings held at the Court House here last night, while Win. Harrow Eq., f Lawrence county, was pouring 'ho. shot" into the Old Line ranks, some nprineipled scamp, too mean and cowardly to belong ta aaj' party, threw aa egg ia at the door, and Strock the speaker ia the face, nst doing serious damage, farther Lhaa calling into requisition his podket hasdkercLief, and toiling his vest and coat slightly.
