Tho following letter from Mr. Fillmore is an answer to one from the President of the Virginia Whig Convention, transmitting a copy of tho preamble and resolutions adopted by that body: Buffalo, N. Y., Aug. 6, 1836. I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt or your letter of the 23d ult., transmitting a copy of the preamble and resolutions adopted hy the Whig Convention of Virginia, lately assembled at Richmond, by which that intelligent and patriotic body recommended to their whig brethren throughout the State to yield to my nomination for the Presidency their active and zealous support. Standing, as I do, as the know candidate of another Dartv. I vet receive this recommenda tlnn with pratituue and pride. I feel that it is made, not because the principles of the two CSartiea W identical, nor with a view of merg;r thorn in each other for such an object is . expressly disclaimed by the convention but i because the principles which my nomination ; represents approach more nearly to those . maintained by the - whigs of Virginia than other candidates, and because, a ih invention was plaased to say, of their "rnnfiHonra in mv late administration of the . covernment. Whatever may be our differences on minor . subjects, I am sure there is one on which we aTee and that one at this moment is para mount to all others. I allude to the preser vation of the union of States and the rescuing , of the country from sectional strife. The question is not so much how shall the government be administered, as how shall it be prenr nn this ereat. vital question, na'rK?ra national democrats and Union lovin-r Americans may well act in concert. .On thu hais T shall with great pleasure re. ceive the votes of all who have confidence in, mv inteeritv und abilitv. and who ask no OiU ir nled than mv nast servico for my future conduct. This position seems to we alike honorable to all. Xo principle is sacrificed. No decepton is practiced ; and I trust that no .one casting his vote for me on this ground will .ever have caused regret it. . - - MILLARD FILLMORE. m jYtr.
