In the discussion yesterday at this place between Judge Morion and Lt. Gov. Willard, the Old Liners probably experienced a defeat never equalled in any of their bitter experience of this campaign. Judge Morton literally killed and bruised Willard Never was the weakness of a demagogue's "principles" and the corruptions of his party, so exposed never the rascality of the demagogue himself so shown up for public execration, as by Morton yesterday in his handling of Willard and his party opinions. At this late hour we write, it is impossible to enter into details. ISut we wish every man in Evansville could have been present at this discussion. Willard's friends doubtless regret there were a dozen persona in attendance. Morton achieved a great victory and niade many votes. Willard we know lost votes, as well as reputation. But we have no disposition to exult over a badly whipped foe. Wo freely forgive Willard his second-hand critticisim on us, in consideration of the firsthanded thrashing he received. We hope he will follow Morton all over the State. We want to see these two men traverse the State side by side, that the people may hear and judge for themselves. Let them do this, and Morton's majority will not be less than twenty thousand. 07" The only good hit made by Willard yesterday was when lie said, that if lying could be made by the Legislature a legal tender, ho could pay off the whole public debt of the State with Gregg, of the N. A. Tribune, Hudson, of the Terre Haute Express, Mason, of the Vincenncs Gazette, and Add Sanders of the Evansville Journal. This excellent piece of satire originated with John Van Buren, and is decidedly second-handed. If liars were a legal tender, wo are suve Willard could purchase tho State of Indiana himself, and have .enough good lies left with which to cheat Kentucky out of a few niggers. He lies alwctifive feet seven inches on his back, but on his feet he can lie all over tho State. JLOCAIa EPAirOlISXT. ptoVn items! RIPORTID BY IIP TOWH, KS. JEJ The one thing that of all others speaks th? bcil for Evansville, is the growing ta for reading that is geuerally manifested y her citizens. But four or five years ago, the people of Kvansville, like the Inhabitants of almost all Tillages were with but a very few exceptions, content with such news as village gossip, and the then necessarily contracted columns of the Journal could furnish them. A few copies of the Louisville ".Toiirnal and N. Y. Tribune, a scanty pioneer circulation of Eastern literature and news, shed a faint light among us. Now besides our city papers, increased in number and vastly improved, there are flvo or six valuable Jouruals published in the large c ties, extensively circulated ' in our midst. As increased facilities for transportation, devetopsthe resources mad stimulates the business of a place, so do Increased facilities for obtaining information enhance tire-desire to kuow what is transpiring in the world. The Leavenworth (Kansas') Journal of Sin d;iy last, is filled with inflammatorj' appeals to' tne people, and says the attack upon Krank-. lin, was the signal for the commencement of j hostilities. An express ft.m the camp on tho 15th of August says that Capt. Trend well's company of -ID men is quartered in a log building sur rounded by nearly four htnid'.-ed "Abolitionists," who swore that no quarter 'should be given to them. Guv. Sh annon was apoaled to call out the United States troops, but they refused to act. Col. Titus with twenty men started to their assistance. But he was attacked at his house near Lecompton, and a number of his men killed. Andrew Weston was wounded, Mr. Sister was killed, Mr. Clowes, editor of the " Southern Advent," killed. The remainder of Titus' men were taken prisoners. The same party attacked the guard of the United States troops who had ltobinson and other prisoners in charge. They surrendered without firing and gave up the prisoners, who are in the hands of Lane's men. They were driving all the Pro-Slavery men out of Douglas county, and destroying their property. Gen. Clark, United rftates Agent for the Pottawattomies, and Capt. Orth and his family escaped across the river before Lane's men readied that point, near Leavenworth City. Gov. Shannon and nearly all the citizens of i Lecompton, made their escape. Lieut. Wood-1 son, who was in the fort with his family was j taken, und lie is still a prisoner. His house was burned down. A light took place on the 4th, near Ossawatomic, between abolitionists and pro-slavery men, who were fortilied. Fourteen abolitionists were killed and sixteen wounded. Lecompton, says the Journal, is to be destroyed to-night. Not a word is said about the movements of Gen. Smith. Inciting irom'Ka- sus ! On the 17th, Brown, at the Lead of three hundred Free State men, attacked and drove into Missouri, a colony of Georgians, near Ossawatoiuie. The colony was unarmed. Their houses were burned, and their property destroyed. On the 12th inst., Franklin was attacked by two hundred men from Lawrence, who, after i dislodging fourteen pro-slavery men by set ting; hre to the house they were in, robbed the post office of seventy dollars; took thirty UniteU pt&tos muskets, and one piece ol ar tillery. Irom Mr. Buckey they tck four hundred and twenty-five dollars, a gold watch, and four hundred and lift dollars worth of clothing. Front Mr. Barnes a large lot of clothing. From Mr. Crane between ninennd twelve hundred dollars in accounts' and notes, and one hundred and twenty-five dollars worth of clothing, and from Judge lane, a valuable horse. On the 15th instant, "Treadwell's party were on foot. It is feared most of them have fa len. Tread well sent to Shannon for aid, who call ed on the United Statta troops, but they re fused to act. The anti-slavery men are driving all the pro-slavery men out of Douglas county, and destroying their property. A fight took place near Ossawatoiuie, on the 11th instant, between two hundred antislavery and twelve pro-slavery. then, the latter in a fort. ...'' Fourteen Free State men wero killed, and Six wounded. On the morning of the 10th inst., Lecompton was attacked and taken by eight hundred of Lane's men. The United States troops having liobinson, Brown, Williams and other prisoners in charge, surrendered without firing a gun. During the absence of Col. Titus, who went tor assistance to Treadwell, his house about a mile from Lecompion, was burned, and Mr. Clowes, editor of the Southern Advocate, and Mr. Septerre were killed, and Andrew Preston wounded. Large bodies of men arc organizing in the border counties of Independence and Stringfellow. Circulars signed by Atchissn, Russell, Anderson anil Boone, are being finely circulated iu the river towns, asking for aid to drive the anti-slavery men and to burn Lawrence, on the 20th inst., for which place a large force had left Leavenworth.
