A Matter Personal in Part. ,The Enquirer of yesterday contained a little on.the subject of the West Franklin difficulty, but' that little only intended to make the people believe it is entirely ignorant of the circumstances connected with the affair, and more particularly of those implicating the Sheriff and Marshal. We have given a full statement of everything appertaining to this unfortunate affair, and have in this connection pointed out to the notice of the public the in famous, course of the Enquirer. We are now done with the subject, unless drawn against our own will into a controversy. But we have one paragraph to notice in the Enquirer's ar tide, and we notice this simply because it has more. than once been thrown up to us by the Enquirer, when we have felt compelled by a sense of duty to this community,' to expose and condemn some act of the Sheriff's. The Enquirers says: - We will here take occasion to remark, that there has taken place a most remarkable change in the opinion of the Journal about Gavitt. When we came here three years ago, the Journals was the recipient of Gavitt's patronage, and the editor wrote column after eolumn of praise of his efficiency. Since that time Gavitt has beaten the Know Nothing nominee for Sheriff; and now he writes column after column of abuse and lies about him. '- Gavitt's patronage, nor any other man's patronage .ever governed our feelings or conduct towards him, nor did we ever repress the expression of an honest opinion for the purpose of pecuniary gain. Nor, indeed, do we believe gain will be the result in the end by any such unmanly and sycophantic course. Three years ago, in giving Mr. Gavitt credit for faithfully discharging the duties of his office to the best of his ability, and conducting himself in his private intercourse with those who placed him in office in a reasonably proper and gentleman ly manner, we rendered him what we consid credit': just dues. He was looking" forward to re-Iection, and doing everything in his power to Tecömmend himself as a good officer He was active and vigilant, and we freely and voluntarily noticed the acts which he thought deserved commendation. Had Mr. Gavitt af ter his re-election pursued the same coursehad he conducted himself with even ordinary decency, there probably would have been no cause ,of difference between us. But wo shall never remain quiet when any man, much more a high' public officer, outrages every principle of right and decency, valued in this community This ;Mr. Gavitt has repeatedly done.. . We submit it to this public, without recalling his acts of the past, if we are not correct.. If we are, wherein hare we displayed any inconsis tency? When he did right, we commenled him-J-.when he did wrong, we rebuked him Just sqch. a course will we follow hereafter, not only towards him but towards every public officer. If Mr. Gavitt doubts this, let him change his course and perform some act worthy of commendation, and he shall freely receive it. But so long as he continues in the infamous course he appears to have laid out for himself, and prefers the character of a pothouse politician, street-brawler, and fermenter of the jrery evils it is a portion of his duty to crash,. he may rest assured we shall hold him up to the1 execration of those his conduct inBults, atkd" without being in the slightest manner deterred by such ruffianly and cowardly threats as havewithin the last two days urged friends to warn us that our lifo is in danger from the hands of the Sheriff of Vanderburgh county, All such threats we despise. The coward makes threat at street corners to frighten weak women and little children. The man performs without threatening. ' d: The editor of the Enquirer thinks, or says, for he don't think any such thing, that the whole object of our couree in the West Franklin difficulty, is to make capital against him, as a candidate for Sheriff. He is giving himself undue importance. If he thinks the people of Yanderburgh county have any idea of continuing the Gavitt administration by electing Hall,, the toady of Gavitt, Sheriff he is very much mistaken. We rely so much upon the decency of the people, that we shall not endeavor to influence them on this subject. ' I, ... . i For the Journal. .-. :- 1 V V. . Evaksville, Aug! 7, 1S56. Ä.' H. We shall i not therefore waste time and space in reason- J ing with the editor of the Rockport Democrat, i the gentkman who last summer visited thi j city and when he returned home published a '. basely slanderous article about Evansville the last reeking fumes of his debauch here. Before the nomination of Mr. Veatch, this edi tor published a long defamatory article with the object of preventing his nomination, evi dently fearing him more than any other candidate in the field. Since his nomination, the Democrat has lieen literally, filled with the most shameless and infamous slanders against Mr. Veatch, which if the one-half were true would render him unfit for the companion ship of decent men. ana bring him nearly, to the low level of the editor of the Democrat himself. To prove these slanders are the basest lies, makes no difference with this editor. He knows they are. lies, because the greater part are of his own invention he knows they have been publicly proved lies and very dirty lies-j-yet week after, week he - repeats them. Is such a man as this any better than the vilest wretches who sweat in our States Prison? lias any one of those striped-coat felons com mitted a crime more disgraceful to his man hood, than this editorial reprobate is guilty of every week- he publishas as truth, slanders against a man, which if true would make his companionship a disgrace, to these felons? We are a ware that any statement made by the editor of the Democrat would be none the more worthy of credence backed by his oatli among those who know him, but unfortunately he is not known outside of his own . county: But we wish to exhibit to those who do riotjtnow him, the quality of the slanders he is now üt: tenng against Veatch, although we nave not space in -our, paper to give any uiea 01 tne quantity. As a politician, we can give no bet ter idea of the character of this editor than to quote ri rernni k of his 'own. He recently said he would vote for a dog if he were a nominee of his own party ' We c-elievo he would; more than this, we believe any man who votes for this editor, the nominee of his party for County Clerk, will vote for a very dirty dog. lint here are extracts from one number of the Rockport Democrat: At a temperance celebration held at Rockport in May last, Jim Veatch the thimlle ringing tumWebug candidate for Congress, said among nther things in a speech, "that the man who took a dram was as mean as the drunkard, the drunkard as mean as the liquor vendor, and the liquor seller as mean as the Otief and highway robber." . ,; James C. Veatch is in favor of freeing the niggers of the South! bringing them to the free soil of Indiana, and allowing them to go to school with our children, vote at our elections and hold office. James Lock hart on the other hand opposes that black doctrine and believes that the whites are superior to the niggers. For whom will you vote? , :. "He (Andy L. Robinson) has expressed my views of abolitionism better than I could do it myself." Veatch in 1854. " 'Were I compelled to make a choice between the two, 1 would vote for Fred. Douglas, the nigger, instead of Stephen A. Douglas, the Democrat." Veatch' s decl.on tlie street. ' Question for the People. Shall niggers be elevated to a xlitical and social equality with the whites? James C. Veatch says ye?, and Hon. J ames Lockhart says no. Choose ye between them. - He (Veatch) was in favor of foreigners being in this country twenty-five years before they should be allowed to vote, and that a 'FOR EIGNER WAS NO MORE ENTITLED TO HOLD OFEICE THAN A KENTUCKY NEGRO." In addition to these, the Democrat in star ing capitals gave in the same colums some of the most infamous Abolition amalgamation doctrines ever promulgated; and said they were endorsed by Veatch. Politics in Kentucky. At the time of writing, we are not advised as to' the result of the State election in Kentucky. We have had very Jittle uth that the Americana would carry the State in thiselec
and we- presume they- have not -done so. Our reason for this belief, may deserv the consideration of dur friehds'in Kentucky. We think the Americans in Kentucky have been relying entirely too much on their stump speakers. 'They have eloquent speakers -old politicians and youngjand men conceded on all sides to be the superiors of the speakers of the opposition. ' Almost every township ' in the State has listened to their eloquence, and some communities have naa a series oi atidresses from the stump .This is all right so far as it goes. Yet the enthusiasm of these gentleme has implanted in the hearts of the Americans of the State, an undue confidence. They have been probably too confident to work as they ought to have done. They have considered the success of their party so certain, as to neglect the very strongest means lor se curing success, l ney nave reuea upon tne eloquence of their speakers, upon their irrefutable facts and figures and the justice of their cause, to bring them .success. In this confidence, they have neglected those other means by the active prosecution of which success is at last the most certain. .We know that some counties have been thoroughly canvassed, but we know equally well that other and the great mass of the counties of the State, have been ripened fields for the harvest, and no laborers to gather the grain. The people have been spoken to from the stump on every side, but private influence united to personal appeals, has remained too much unexercised in the confidence of easy victory without the labor. Let the Americans of Kentucky nowo to work, and carry the State for Fillmore. They can do it by work, but they cannot without. Do not rely entirely upon those gallant men who are now canvassing the State and addressing the people. They willd o all that mortal men can do, in their , own sphere. But rely upon your own labors to bring out every American vote, and to make American votes. We have full confidence that Kentucky will go for Fillmore, yet we believe so by relying upon the fact, that the Americans realize the great ob ject can only be attained by hard and judieious work. . . ., Visiouri Credit The following extract from a letter addressed by a Missouri merchant to the St.Louis Democrat,exhibit8 the causes that havebrought the credit of the State to so low a point: ! ' I observe , from the quotations of sales of Missouri Mate bonds, made from time to time by the writer of the money articles for your paper, that our bonds are selling at a low price in the New Yoik market, viz: at 85 cents on the dollar. While I regret that our credit is so low in the Eastern market, I am nevertheless, not surprised at it; for the course pursued by Mr. Atchison, Stringfellow.and those who are under their influence, has brought our State to be a by -word and a reproach. I have seen letters from the East, which say that our State is in such bad moral odor, that even many capitalists who usually- look more to cent, per cent than anj' thing else will have nothing to do with Missouri bonds, and Col. Benton, I observe, in some of his speeches, has referred to the Iqw condition of Missouri credit, attributing it to the state of things in Kan sas, brought on us by the violent courso of Atchison and company, together with the connivance of the present administration of the general government. ' . ' What a spectacle to see a' great State, like Missouri, with resources equal to any State in the Union of her ago, with her securities selling at 8 to 10 per cent, lower than -Virginia, which has a debt of nearly quadruple that of our own State I . 1'ut there is a remedy, and this remedy must be applied, else we shall sink still lower in credit and character, , In my opinion, the only remedy is ts turn out of ollice the men who rule us, and' who have brought on all the Kansas difficulties.
