07"Yesterday morning Mr. Stinson was worse, and there were but small hopes of his - recovery. It was reported yesterday that two of our citizens who went to Carmi, 111., after Ttoss, found him there, but the citizens relused to give him up. We hope there mav be some . mistake in this. As there is now almost a . certainty that the victim will not survive his wound, let it be recollected there were accessories to this dark deed, and that bej'ond ques- - tion the man who struck the blow was assisted to escape dj Sher.ff Gavitt and Marshal , Evans. ' .ArrrtEciATiXG his Meanness. A friend writes to us from Owensville as follows: "Jim Lock hart Las Lunself publicly advertised here to address the inhabitants of "Wabash township, adjoining this township, on Thursday next. It contains about fwrty-five voters. The Democrats here dare not deny that he is taking a mean advantage of his opponent iby pursuing this course. I hope to God the p80ple will rebuke him for this if for no other of his numerous acts of political meanness. lie shows he has fears of being driven to the wall, and must "lay his traps" before meeting his opponent." 07" The telegraph wire running across the river just above this .city, on the Henderaon line, was melted by the lightning jivst 'Friday afternoon. This is the second time this accident has occurred. Q7Ve had a slight rain Suturday afternoon, barely sufficient to lay the dust. There were heavy rains in the vicinity. Kentucky Election. Eiver Matters. . The river is 'lower now than it has been since 1838, there being only about 20 inches water on the worst bars. Low as it is, it was still tailing last Saturday. Heretofore when the water got at a certain low stage, it remained stationary for a week or ten days but the river has been steadily tailing at the rate of about an inch every 24 hours the last few weeks, from Pittsburgh down. Even the smallest stern-wheelers are now laying up. Boats drawing only fourteen or fifteen inches, have had to spar all the way over ScurHetown Bar. Seven boats were laid up here last Saturday Oh.o, Delegate, W. JMaclay, Julia Dean, Evansville, John Tompkins and Win. Dickson. They have an excellent harbor at the lower part of the city, a still place and deep water. Destruction of WMte Eiver Bridge. The splendid bridgejust being erpcted acrots White River, at Maysville, ou the Eastern Division of the Ohio and Mississippi Kailroad, was destroyed by a hurricane of wind last Thursday afternoon, the 31st u'.t The loss is estimated at $12,000. The work of erect ing the bridge again will at once bj commenced. QÜ7"The Julia Dean is a neat and fast running stern-wheeler, and has during the low water been running in the Evansville and Cairo trade. Her olHcers are experienced .tnd accommodating, and we hope will receive all the patronage Evansville can give the gallant little steamer when .she coms out again, öhe is now laid up here.
