Daily., hourly that litte word is repeated by i housand3 ; yet we never really appreciate the ! Hnie meaning of the word till the hour arrives ; 'for us to part with some dear friend ; then it 'often falls like a death knell upon our spirits. "The thought uppermost in our minds is, shall 'we meet again, and how ? Perhaps long years : hall intervene, and the bright eyes now looking so hopefully into the future, shall be dimmed with disappointment's tears. How differently the future appears at different times! Sometimes it is all bright and joyous, and we feel a halo of happiness surrounding us seemingly too great for t,he mists of adversity to penetrate, anon sorrow seems to delight to Abide with us. When we part we are sure of but on more meeting that meeting in eternity. E. B. St. Charles Hotel, Portland, Ky. We all attention to the advertisement of this Hotel. We are assured by a gentleman who stopped several days at this house, that it is as fine a hotel as any at Louisville, and admirably . kept. The building is new, roomy and comfortable, and every attention is paid to guests. . It is the only good house at Portland, and travelers going up the river would do well to vail themselves of its comforts. There is a fine garden and groves in the rear, where guests can enjoy a touch of country life. Mr. W. W. Owen ia the proprietor, and Mr. J. W Bedding one of the managers. CT The New Albany Ledger and Louisville Democrat are apparently highly delightad at the misunderstanding between the opponents of Lockhart in this District. They are right in being so. Nothing but a want of unity among the opponents of Lockhart can prevent his defeat. CC7 Only 22 inches water reported at Scuffletown Bar yestcrcU. It is expected to be only knee deep by to-morrow. Even small boats are becoming very scarce. O'Riley's nd Howard & Brown's mammoth wharfboats were hard aground yesterday. . Falte Chargei. The Rockport Republican says: Mr. Veatch is not an Abolitionist, and never did the' pro-slavery press utter a more base .and wilful lie, than when they use this term to him. True, he stands upon the same ground in reference to the subject of slavery that a majority of fifteen thousand of the voters of Indiana did in '54. He is opposed to the corrupt administration of Franklin Pierce.Stephen Arnold Douglas' old line traitorism and swindling that repealed the Missouri Compromise, and equally as much opposed to the Kansas outrages sanctioned by Pierce and his Cabinet. If this is abolitionism, then is James C. Veatch . an abolitionist. We see it stated, upon the authority of one Irving Goodman, of this county, that James C. Veatch once stated that "a foreigner was - no more entitled to hold office than a Kentucky negro." This same Goodman published the same statement in the Rockport Democrat of October 6th, 1855; whereupon Mr. Veatch ; published the following: 1 Msssbs. Vinson & Linegab: The Democrat of this morning contains a certificate from Irving Goocfman, stating that I had said that I was in favor of foreigners bet ing in this country 25 years before they should be allowed to vote, and that ,a foreigner was no more entitled to hold office than a Kentuc ' ky negro. No such statement was ever made bp me to any one; and I pronounce it a wilful falsehood 4 got up for the base purpose of deceiving the public JAMHiö U. ViüATCii. Oct. 6. '56. We do not believe there is a single candid - person who is acquainted with the two men but what believes every word stated by Mr. Veatch in the above card.' But this needs no comment, for such reports cannot injure him, Tom Thumb Robbed. Loss of $20,000 - worth or Jewelby. Tom Thumb's agent . called upon us at a late hour last night, and informed as that the little General had been robbed of all the jewels he had received as presents, during the last eight or nine years, aad amounting in value to about twentv thou sand dollars. They were deposited on a chair Bear the piano, in the Melodeon Hall, with the intention or exhibiting them to the audience after the General's levee had closed, as is the usual custom but when the time came for displaying them, it was discovered that they were missing. It is supposed that it was a premeditated robbery, with pne or more per sons, and who baa a woman tor An accomplice. The box which contained them was between two and three feet long. Cin. Com. 29A.
