We do not know that any particular reply is needed to an article in the Yincennes Gazeft of last Monday, addressed to the editor of this paper. We assumed the position that he, in common with us, honestly endorsed the nomination of Fillmore, and he placed Fillmore's name at the bead of the Gazette in the full faith and strength of rißht, justice and patriotism, and promised a good fight for Fillmore and the National principles he represents and that after doing this, there was inconsistency irreconcilable in changing to Fremont, when neither the one party or the other, nor the one candidate or the other, had undergone any change of 'principles. In reply, the Gazette says it if. opposed to those who for- " mess of potts ge" would sell out Mr. Fillmore, American 'principles, and the American party to the B lack Line Democracy. We are opposed to f,his also but we are equally opposed to th e who would sell the came to the " Black Republican" party. We are opposed to any sale of Fillmore and American principles, and therefore we look with no faror upon the Gazette's sale of Fillmore and American principles to Republicanism. The Gazette is in fvxvor of sacrificing Fillmore, and all organization in this State to adTance his claims and American principles, merely because it fears if this sacrifice be not made, Buchanan will carry Indiana. We are as much opposed to Buchanan and his party as any other man in the State, and have proved it by our works. But for this reason shall we betray those with whom we hare been cting, turn traitor to the choice of our heart and judgment, and trample in the dust the principles we have been so long advocating ': Has enmity to a man or to a party any just claims upon us to make this sacrifice of opinions, feelings and political honor ? In advocating the claims and principles of Fillmore, we believe we are right, that we are obeying honest impulses, 1 that we are acting the part of a true patriot So precisely did the Gazette believe a month ago. We have asked it to show any change in Fillmore and his party for evil, or any change in Fremont and his party for good, since that time, to justify the Gazette's sudden somerset. It has not specified any. It has sacrificed its friends, principles, party and candidate, merely to carry out something calculated to humor a narrow State policy. If the Gazette thinks there is inconsistency in the Journal's supporting the State Tickst and Fillmore at the same time, is our inconsistency any greater than the editor of the Gazette's, who stood side by side with us in supporting the same tickets till he changed for Fremont? He is probably aware that the National Americans of the State support the men on that ticket irrespective of the platform passed by the Convention which nominated them knowing themselves not strong enough to run a ticket of their own, and taking these men on the virtue of their opposition to Old Lineism and its corrupt leaders and infamous principles. As for the "platform" passed informally by the meeting which nominated Mr. Veatch, he refuses himself to be governed by it or in any manner to acknowledge its binding force." We assure the Gazette there is no three cornered edge to the Fillmore plat form as it suggests at least its edges never touch the ribs of its real friends. In conclusion, we trust that as the Gazette and Journal differ as to the Presidential candidates, we shall not permit this difference to interfere with our united efforts to crush Old Lineism, and secure success for the State Ticket. We have no disposition by quarreling with friends to give an enemy .the advantage. We are honest in our opinions, and we accord the Gazette equal honesty in its faith. Fillmore Barbecue. Recollect the Julia Dean will leave -the wharf this morning at 7 o'clock for West Franklin, to take citizens to the Fillmore Barbecue, to be held there to-day. Let all Fillmere men who can leave their business for few hours attend this Barbecue. The Julia Dean will make the trip in a short time, and return in the evening. Take the ladies along. The friends of Fillmore at West Franklin exfeet ft big crowd from Evansville, and they Won't charge Indianans or Kentuckians either ftt s piece ef cold ham, or even for a good dinner, a la Springfield Old Line " Barbecue." There will be a number of speakers at the Barbecue, and Jas. G. Jones, Esq., among others, will address the multitude. aw (y There were eight steamers and several large fiatboats aground oa Scuffletown, Wed nesday morning. A lime boat on the bar took fire a few days ago and was with the cargo totally destroyed.

Giving up the Battle "Willard Badly Scared. There is every prospect that the Old Liners will in their State ticket, be as badly if not worse whipped this year as they were two years ago. They are now discouraged, and
their leaders are fighting a weak battle. There will probably be a warmer strife in this District than in any other in the State. As they did two years ago so will the Old Liners now, devote their strongest energies to preserve the First District. A defeat in this Gibralter of their strength, will be the only blow needed, with their certain prostration in nearly every other District, to destroy them as a party in Indiana. They know that, and every effort in their favor will be used to prevent defeat here. Willard has given up the State private ly, though publicly he carries a bold face. We have understood that while a gentleman was sitting in the State Library room at the Capi tol, concealed fcom view while reading by interposing objects, Willard came in and ad dressed Görden Tanner, the Librarian, who had been laboring zealously for him. He de clared he was beaten 25.000 votes, and Tanner agreed with him, declaring that he was not going to waste any more time and money in so useless a struggle. Both were indignant, as new and bad news had evidently just broken senses. A correspondent of the State Journal,. signing his own name, says: On the 15th inst. I saw Gov. Willard in conversation, about political affairs, with two other gentlemen (who they were I do not know) in the State House yard, and was near enough to them to hear distinctly what passed be t ween them: First gentleman asked Willard. "How is it going?" (.referring to the coming election,) "O, we are licked we are licked," answered Mr. W. Second gentlemen added, "We are that the damnedist." The same writes in another part of his communication says: But why does Mr. W., and why do his pets get so waspish and "venomous" at me? A gentleman of unimpeachable character, from another county, has published that he heard Willard tell Mr. Culley that the State was lost and that he (Willard) would not spend another dollar of his own money in the canvass! I am told, also, that another gentleman of equal veracity, from Johnson county, heard Mr. Willard say, that the Old Line party in Indiana were "going to hell!" Willard is doubtless more candid than poli tic. There is a determination among all men opposed to Old Lineism, to sweep it from this State the ensuing election. We all remember their acts in the last Legislature, when in a decided minority, yet holding the power in the Senate, they clogged the wheels of legisla tion, and bisely used their advantage for the most rascally purposes even preventing the election of a U. S. Senator, because they, the minority, and representing a minority of the people, could not get a Democratic Senator and thus compelled Indiana to be represented for two years in the U. S. Senate by only one Senator, when the smallest State in the Union had two. The people have not forgotten the infamous conduct of the Old Liners in that Legislature, nor the iniquitous acts of the Pierce Administration which the Old Line party of Indiana endorses. Willard supposed they woull forget, or that not forgetting they would prove themselves filled with a christian spirit of forgiveness. But christian charity has no mantle large enough in politics to cover Willard himself, who the leader of the Old Line is in this Legislature, and the prime mover in all their rascality, has been thrust before the people of. Indiana by his party to ask their suffrages for the highest office in their gift. . He has discovered this,' and he has no doubt the very best reasons for his belief that he and his ticket will be defeated by a large majority. OAdd. Sanders, of the Evansville Journal is much excited about the conduct of some of the brethren. They have begun to make trouble in the camp, and threaten to vote for Lockhart, on account of the slavery question. Add. does'nt think that such small matters as political opinions or objects should be allowed to interfere with the holy purpose of ruling. Lou. Dem. We trust harmony has been restored, and with it such, unity as will render any excitement as to Lockhart's election unnecessary. At all events Add. will keep his shirt on. Add- is determined that political opinions or objects shall interfere, not with any lwly pur pose of ruling, but with the unholy purpose of the Old Line party, as conveyed in the real and prime article of their faith, rule or ruin. To accomplish that object we have labored, and we hope with no undue excitement, to secure harmony and unity of action, among those having the same purpose. Fillmore Meeting at Newbnrg. The Americans of Warrick county field quite an enthusiastic meeting at Newburg on Tuesday evening. Messrs. John J. Chandler and Wm. K. McGrew, were present and addressed the meeting. A good deal of the right kind of spirit was manifested, and the best of feeling prevailed. Scarcely a soul left the building during the speaking which lasted until 11 o'clock at night. Mr Fillmore is rapidly gaining ground in old Warrick as every where else, and prospects are trnly cheering. The Fillmore and Donelson club of Newburgh adopted a constitution and are now thoroughly organized. Success to them. Take Notice. Ye who come up into our sanetum, and carry off our exchanges! (particularly the Louisville and Evansville Journal.) that the penalty therefor will be an application of shoe-leather. This intended for those who do without obtaining permission of the proper persons. Newburg Irib. It is hard to have to give those who carry off the Louisville and Evansville Journal boot in the bargain. But we hope the reading of these papers will make them better men.
People's Club. In pursuance of published notice, a meeting was held at Crescent City Hall on Tuesday evening, July 29th, to form a People's Club to
operate in the coming State election. Philip Hornbrook was appointed Chairman, - ' ' and G. W. Rathbone Secretary. The Chairman stated the object of the meeting to be to form a club, composed of all , opposed to Old Lineism, and with a view to promote the election of county and State officers without reference to the Presidency. ,. ,, , ... . This Association shall be called " The People's Club, of Evansville," and its objects snail be to aid in the election of the People's State Ticket ; the People's candidate for Congress, and to oppose the nominees of the so-called Democratic party. j Sec. 2. Sec. 3. As some of the members of this Club are friendly to the election of Millard Fillmore and others to the election of John C. Fremont to the Presidency of the United States, it is agreed and understood that on that subject we will agree to differ, and that in the proceedings and discussions of the Club nothing shall be done to offend the friends -of either candidate, and that any attempt to violate this rule, shall be promptly checked by the presiding officer. Sec. 4 The officers of the Society shall constitute an Executive Committee, and as such shall be charged with the execution of the objects of the Society, have charge of the funds of the Society, and shall receive and disburse the same, subject to such rules and regulations as the Society may from time to time prescribe. Sec. 5. The funds of the Society shall conconsist of such monies as may be voluntarily subscribed by the members thereof. Sec. 6. The Society shall meet on the evening of every week until the State election, at such place as may be pro vided for that purpose. The fixing the regular day for weekly meet ings was postponed. The meeting then adjourned to meet at Crescent Hall on Tuesday evening next. P. I10RNBR00K, Chairman. G V. The following circular was prepared to be sent to the County Auditors previous to a tour of county visitation into the Southern part of the btate: Department of Public Instp.üction, : IswANAPOLis'May 22, 1856. J To the County Auditors: Gentlemen: You will receive through the Secretary of State, in boxes directed to your county clerks, the following books, one copy of which is intended for each of your townships, viz: Legislati-ve Documentary Journal, Acts of the General Assembly of 1855, and Pennsylvania School Architecture. Please request said clerks to have the aforesaid vol umes numbered in their numerical order on the list of their respective libraries,' and also furnish tbeni with a copy of my last Report and the Revised School .Law for the perma nent use and reference of the Township Board: and distribute the other copies of said report to school officers, (Jounty Examiners especially, and other friends of education as you may have opportunity. Put them into circulation; among the people at an early date. Yours, truly, Caleb Mills, Sup't. On my return, after an eight weeks' absence, I found that the boxes had just been sent. 1 his delay, much to my surprise and no small vexation of the school ofheers and of the friends of education, was occasioned by no fault in this or the Secretary's Department, but was caused by an unforeseen hindrance in the pre paration of one of the volumes ot I oktee a In diana Reports. Ihe above circular will apprise the citizens of the fact that they may now have access to the aforesaid documents and educational works in their several townships. It may also be a matter of interesting in formation to the friends of the cause to know that the suit commenced by Springfield township, Franklin eounty, to test the constitution ality of the provision of the Revised School Law of 18oo to equalize with the common funds the inequalities of the special funds, with due regard to the proviso of section 101, Re vised School Law, has been decided by the Supreme Court in favor of the constitutionality of said statute. We now have stable ground on which to proceed, and ample margin and incentive for improvement. Editors of Indiana will confer a favor on many of their patrons by copying this article into their journals, as well as greatly oblige the undersigned.
