VEATCH, or n"Rfcmt coevrv. . gov Airain . ' ' . . Joe Vnght addressed a large crowd in front. of the Washington Iloue Saturday niKht. , He made a long speech which was listened to with respectful attention. We 'heard tliat speech in all its length and beadth of misrep resentation, deinagogery and humbug, and we are' glad we did hear it, that we may expose some of the broad deceptions attempted to be thrust row.! the throats of this people by this demagogue, who apparently thinks that because he is Governor of this State, his naked ' assertions will pass for truth, and his excessive and fifty times repeated love of the Constitution ; and the blessed Union, will pass for unadulterated patriotism. Piausable, sanctimonious, fervid, continually telling of his devotion to the Constitution, as though no man could love it with the eestacy of Joe Wright, always flattering his audience for intelligence and patriotism, &c, &c. it does seem as if a man owjht '.. to belfCTe everything he solemnly states as fact. But we have a great deal less faith in '' Joe Weight's statements than we have in those made by an honest man. His speech of Saturday night was full of sophistrj', and every piece of sophistry well greased by his oily words befoie he asked the audience to swallow it lie had not a document, but relied altogether on the credulity of those who heard him, and upon his own deceptive declamation j , for success. He might have confined Demo-' cratSTtrongcr in their faith, but intelligent I - peoptV can never be won by such speeches. We shall have more to say of this speech tomorrow. It is the same one ha lias been delivering in this neighborhood at other points, and which ho intends uttering, as he says, three,or four times a week till the election, of coarse altered in opinions to suit different localties. People's Club. We are requested to announce that there will be a meeting at Crescent City Hall on Tuesday evening next, at early gas light, for tho purpose of forming a People's Club, to promote the7 election of the People's State Tieket, and the election of Jas. C. Veatch to represent this District in Congress, and to oppose the nominees of the so-called Democratic party. All those friendly to these objects, are invited to attend and participate in the proceedings of the meetinx. fjir" We call attention in good earnest to the Marine Railway and Boat Yard meeting adTertised at Crescent City Hall this evening. It is worthy of remark that but one southern man, lloifman, (South American) of Maryland, voted with the ma jority. . -; fjT"We have two brief questions for those Democrats who eulogize the repeal of the Mis souri compromise. First did not the Democratic party in their national convention of .1852 solemnly pledge themselves never to give ' the least countenance to the agitation of slavery under any circumstances? The river was forded at Cincinnati on Thursday, by some enterprising horseman The ferry-boats find low water a losing state of affairs.' The Kate SarchetU passed up from Cairo last Saturday on her way to Louisville, and anticipating a hard time of it at Scuffletown. The Scuflletown bar is a lively place just now. The Argonaut and Clifton bound up, and the Yorktown, Violett, Chancellor, Arkansas Traveler, Dr. Robertson, Hickman and W. II. Denny, are sticking there now, or were on Saturday evening. "All signs fail in dry weather." No hope of rain now until ' goodness knows when." In the meantime, the bar is rising, and the river is falling, while draymen do a good business in supplying the thirsty about town. Cisterns have " failed." Capt. Liter, of the steamer Bowling Green, was in the city last Saturday. We are informed by him that the broken shaft of his steamer will be repaired in a short time, and his steamer will be here in ten days or two weeks. In the mean time he returns his thanks to old patrons, and will soon be in the field prepared for an active business. The river fell about two inches on Friday night, and is still falling. The "'metal mark" at Pittsburg reports twenty inches in the channel. The English of this is, that a boat drawing twenty inches of water, would probably get out from Pittsburg about November next. Two feet eight inches water in the canal at Louisville, and three feet scant on the bars between that point and Cincinnati On Wednesday, at St. Louis, the Mississippi, Illinois and Missouri were all low and falling. The committee is still in session. A Judge of the Supreme Court has been arrested for stabbing one of the committee, a policeman, while making an arrest. The committee are firmly established. "The Goveror remains at Sacramento City. Tho accounts from the mines are good, and the agricultural prospects cheering. The conduct of Herbert excites much indignation. The Oregon skirmishes continue. Col. Wright is not killed. Col. Buch tun had a fight at the Big Meadows ; 40 Indians and ten whites killed. The election returns were not all in. Tho result is probably Democratic. All the arms collected by the law and order men were seized by the committee. Darkee, qf the committee, was arrested, charged with piracy, in seizing arms which Lelonged to the State. . , . A schooner around at San Francisco, from New Hoik, Maj. Walters in command, sent to Leon an account of a rumor that the Guati malians which were near that city were fired on by the Rivas party. One was wounded and several of the Rivas party killed. Wal ters waited outside some time, but the enemy not appearing, he returned. There is no sign of any invasion now, but as the league of the Nicaraguan States still exists, an invasion is looked for at the close of the rainy season. Wtlker needs men and money for the pros ecution of the struggle. The whole vote for President was 21,000. Walker received 14,000, and the rest were given to Rivas, Ferrer, Gerrese and Ralzas. The Texas has arrived with Vera Cruz dates to the 22d. A conspiracy has been detected at Puebla to restore Santa Anna. Many persons were implicated The Storm King arrived at San Francisco from New York. Mr Herbert's Trial. Washington, July 26. In the Herbert trial last evening, Gen. Preston, for the prosecution, wished to reply to Mr. Walker's strictures, which was objected to by the other counsel for the prisoner. ExMiyor Lenox, who was standing near was overheard by Mr. Radcliff, to observe, that was unlair and unjust. Mr. RadclifF sharply said, they wa ited no outsiders to interfere, and in the course of a hurried colloquy, Mr. Lenox called him a liar. Mr. Radcli tie dashed at Lenox, and Mr Brady interposed to prevent a collision. Such is the version of the afuir, subsequently deputy Marshal Phillips, made complaint before Justice Thompson, who was on the premises, that he had reason to believe Radclitfe had sent, and Mr. Lenox had received a challenge. Radclilfe was forth with arrested, and held to bail in $3000 not ! to gnt a dnel. 1 A warraut was served on Lenox who raned : to appear. Much excitement nd .ndig.na- : at the acquittal of Herbert. He left Washington early this morning. The two trials cost the Government S1800. Ex-Mayor Lenox arrested and held to bail, not to right a duel with RadclitTe. Several other personal difficulties growing out of the Herbert case still remain unsettled New York, J uly 26.
