HOWK. of Lagrange. -Uth- do" WM. K. HALE, of Wat ach. Fillmore and "Policy" TheWincennea Gazette is now advocating the cause of Fremont. We shall not quarrel with it on this account, but hope that it may , induce every man in the District not totally wedded to the Old Line party, yet who cannot be persuaded to give his vote for Fillmore, to exert his influence in some manner against the Old. Line party and its office granping leaders. But the Gazette offers as its great reason for changing its policy, not that the opinions of its editors have changed a particl as to the patriotism of supporting Mr. Fillmore, or as to the superior worth of the man and his principles over those by which he ' is opposed but that there is no possible hope of carrying the State for Fillmore. We would ask the Gazette how much stronger was" that hope when the name of Fillmore was placed at the head of its columns and when the Gazette lent an earnest voice in his behalf, even up to a few days ago ? Are the principles of the American party any less correct, its objects any less national and patriotic, than when they received the Gazette's support? Or are the principles of the Republican party any less sectional, or any different from what they were three weeks ago ? If the Gazette was supporting right and justice, and that which it begged all patriots to uphold and sustain, when Fillmore's name was at its head, can mere temporary policy excuse opposition to that which it then supported, or the resignation of a patriot's duty ? It is not for the patriot or the good citizen to temporize with, error and wrong when the plain path of right .3 before him. We believe we are right in supporting Fillmore that his election will bento the advancement of the best interests of tha 'country and the welfare of the people, and porhaps necessary for the very security of the Union itself. Is this any different opinion from that held by the Gazette ? If not, are we right in standing by position founded upon honest convictions and which we believe it the patriot's duty to maintain or is the Gazette right in swapping off honest convictions and patriotic duty to temporize with what at the best is but a doubtful policy t -We do not think for a moment that there is any prospect of Fillmore carrying Indiana. But we do know" there are thousands in the State who- desire, conscientiously and as patriots, to cast their votes for hira, and the great majority of whom, if they have not the privilege of doing this, will not vote at all. We feel too, that our zealous and hard working friends in Kentucky, who are fighting hand to hand and breast to breast with their enemies for ' Fillmore, should know that these thousands in Indiana, if they cannot aid Fillmore materially by their votes, are looking with beating hearts at the battle raging around them that the Fillmore men hero are yet organized, and will cast their votes for the man of their choice that as their chieftain's motto is, he would rather be right than President, so they would rather light in the right than in the wrong to elect their President. An Unfortunate Nomination. Mr. W. C. Moreau was unanimously nomi nated Elector for this District by the Old Line State Convention. Mr. Moreau with praiseworthy zeal at once commenced the canvass, but unfortunately for the interests of those who nominated him, he saw fit to advocate on the stump doctrines directly opposed to those of Old Lineism. In fact he came out a Repub lican, and is now making Old Lineism sweat Opr worthy cotemporary has since sought to annihilate him, but Mr. Moreau still continues on the stump as Democratic Elector, making Republican speeches! The Rockport Democrat is also verybitter against him, and thinks its Old Line cotemporaries are giving him too much cousequence by abusing him that "he's not worth the ammunition, brother editors." Now here is what the Uockport Democrat said of Mr. Moreau, in alluding to his nomination as Elector, last January: -"Mr. Moreau deserves the confidence and approval of all Democrats, for the persevering manner in which he endeavored to carry out the wishes of the Spencer Democracy, as manifested ,in their resolutions at the late mass meeting," &c. "We congratulate the Democracy in securing so able a champion to the cause as will he found in the person of Mr. M. We take great pleasure in recommending him to t!.e citizens of Pike, as a high toned honorable gentleman, reliable lawysr. and withal a true Democrat.' t , I i r , , (jr W observe thai whilst the New York pourier, ; Times, Tribune and the Albany Journal are citing Mr. Fillmore's course while President to prove that he is a rank Slavery man, the Mobile Registerand other Southern Democratic journals of the same stamp are doing the same to prove that he is an Abolitionist, dyed in the wool. As to which party is in the right the American people will decide in November next.
Poitmaiter at Kewourg Ousted - A Foit Offlc boTight for a Barrel et WhUky. The only times we ever hear from our honorable and talented Representative in Congress, Smith Miller, is when a squeak comes from . some town in the District, and the mouse in the shape of a new Postmaster comes forth from the political labors of our mountain Rep-

No young man, no matter. He has an idea, that he is working for his Dis- what hia occupation, should be ignorant of trict, and lending valuable aid and comfort to book keeping. It is a capital to any one, but his party, when he labors to oust Snooks, who especially to young men just starting out in j was seen to shake hands with a live Know life, and to all such we address ourselves. We have just heard of the removal of Squire the first of September, and continues for ten Robertson from the Post Office at Newburg, months. ourg as well as himselt were astonished to hear that be had been removed, and a Mr. Simeon Lamastus, the keeper of a groggery, and as utterly unlit for Postmaster as his rum-hole would have" been for the Post OlHce, was appoin ted in his place. Citizens of both parties were indignant, and the Democrats themselves got up a petition to send to Miller, against the 'change. Mr Lamastus heard of this petition, saw those getting it up, anl stated to them that if they would not send it, he would write to the Department declining the appointment. Thus Robertson continued in the Post Oifice, and the subject was considered entirely settled until a few days ago, when Robertson was again removed, and the identical Simeon La mastus appointed in his place ! It is due him to say, that he is not now a. retailer of liquor, but sells it by the quantity, treating his friends like a gentleman. Smith Miller has in this matter not only insulted the communi ty, but exhibited a contempt for his own party, whom he knew did not denire this change. But here is a fact bearing on tha appointment Just before Miller went to Washington the l.tst time, he visited Newburg and stopped a short time with Lamastus. Soon after his de parture home, a barrel of whiskey, from Lamantus' establishment, followed our worthy Representative! No w we should like to know whether that was good whisky? It it was a good article, and he did'nt pay for it why, the Democracy and the people of Newburg generally may consider themselves sold, or the Post Office bought, far a barrel of red eye that's all. Our whole account is a correct report as told us. Little Oiflce Seekers alter Veatch. The Rockport Democrat has commenced abusing Veatch with a hearty good will quite refreshing. It villified Mr. Veatch before the Princeton meeting, for the purpose of frightening the good people of the District into refusing him the nomination. Hicks devoted three and a half columns to this frightening process, and the consequence was, his victim was unanimously nominated on the second ballot 1 The e fleets of his present attacks- will doubtless be equally crushing. Hicks, like Hall of the Enquirer, blackguards for pay. They have both been endeavoring to convince the Democratic party lately, that its debt of gratitude to them can only be paid in fat offices. Hicks demanded the office of Auditor of State, and Hall that of Secretary of. State. Hicks wa3 told he could'nt come in, and Hall was'nt even treated with respect. The party at large evidently did not know them, or else thought their services had "done their opponents more guod than their friends. But Hicks goes home and tells his party that if he cannot be Auditor of State, he must be Cierk of Court in Spencer county. Hall, is assuring his party here, (that is the faction of the party owned by Gavitt.) that as he has been refused the Secretaryship of State, the office of Sheriff of Vanderburgh county is very justly due him. We are inclined to support his claims. Ever since he announced himself a candidate for the nomination of his party, he has been compara tively a decent man. In fact, his paper has scarcely been more blackguard than the' usual run of Old Line papers and this is a vast improvement. Besides, he has had so much experience with Sheriffs, that he cannot well help making a good Slieri If himself, if he will only try. But to secure these offices, I licks and Hall have commenced slandering and misrepresenting Mr. Veatch. We hope they will keep on. It may recommend their own claims to the Old Line party, but it will also recommend Mr. Veatch to the peopls. 03-The California Bulletin of the IRth ult says thata numberof documents had arrived at the San Francisco Postoffice, addressed to Ned McGowan, Billy Mulligan, Chas. Duane, and J. P. Casey. They were franked by the Hon. P. T. Herbert. The question is, where shall they be sent to? We are sorry that Mr. Herbert's personal friends should have leen either hung or forced to leave the country for "their country's good," before they received those proofs of his continued regard. "Birds of a feather, &c." 07 The communication on "our Country and its Progress in 1856," is entirely too long Cor our columns, and too prosy for general readmg. The Arrison Verdict. Our readers were apprised by telegraph in yesterday morning s Journal, of the termination of this remarkable trial. The verdict of mmislaughler, is an insult to the citizens of Cincinnati. Arrison was either guilty of the most deliberate and malicious murder ever recorded in the annals of crime, or ho was innocent. We do not pre- j tend to say that the prisoner was guilty, but we do say that if he was f all guilty, then was his crime, murder in the first degree, and no more manslaughter, than it was larceny. j The statute says that manslaughter is the unlawful killing of another, without malice, eith- , upon a sudden quarrel, or unintentionally But the facts in this case show that Arrison was killed by a machine, which must have been . in preparation for weeks; that it was sent to the deceased, for the purpose of taking his life, that not only Allison but his wife were the victims, and now a sworn jury, of Cincinnatians have convicted rrison of a crime, of which in contemplation of law, malice is not an ingredient The instructions of the J udge were as little regarded as though he had delivered his charge to the winds. Whether Arrison will obtain another trial, or abide this verdict and be imprisoned ten years, we are lot advised. He is now to be put upon trial for the murder of Mrs. Allison. Tobacco from Green River in Flatboats. During the season a great quantity of Green River tobacco has been brought out in Hatboats. This is partly owing to continued low water, and partly to the fact, that by this means of transportation the freights are materially reduced. These boats come down from all parts of Green River, carrying each an average load of twenty hogsheads. The men who own these flats, are hard working boatmen, who buy their groceries &c. in Evansville, and occasionally U.ke back small lots of dry goods and groceries, purchased here by Green river merchants. Some idea can be formed of the nature of the business, from the Let that the boats are towed by hand along the Kentucky shore to the mouth of Green river, and from there to their places of destination. The return trip is profitable, and easy after leaving Green river. At the close of the season, we intend to furnish some statistics, as to the amount of tobacco shipped from this point the pas. year, and we expect to show, that more tobacco passes through the hands of our Commission merchants, in one season than is landed at any Otiio river town during the same time excepting Louisville. vr9 only need the establishment of atirstclass tobacco warehouse, to throw Louifcville behind us, in a twelvemonth. We have already alluded to this matter, and we do so again hoping that someone will set the ball in motion. lion. Geo. G. Dunn faithful to Fillmore. We make the following extract from a debate in the House a lew days ago : - Mr. Dunn said he came here with high expectations A voice " No doubt of thaf'J that the Missouri restric'ion would be reshaped. He was exceedingly sorry they had grown smaller and smaller until they were eniirel)' dissipated. He was persuaded no eiFor would be made to restore it, and there could be no peace in this country till that was done in substance or fact. The North and South must remember this-r-until the question of individual safctv in Kansas is settled, no appropnatin bills should be passed. Several voices That's ri-ht!" "That's the Ulk !"1 Tha only way to insure compliance is to stop the wheels of the Government, and we will give them so.me trouble while they are rolling us to the Presidency, lie would not go for Buelianaa nor Fremmd, but for the man living in Xeio York, as the only one whose election could give promise of peace. The Vincennes Gazette of Tuesday says ' Mr. Dunn has telegraphed home that the Mis souri Compromise would be restored in less 'than two weeks. We presume he means the ' House will vote for its restoration. We doubt it. Mr. Dunn is our most talented memlier of Congress, and we are glad to perceive his voice is for Fillmore. Mr. Brooks in his speech after the vote for his expulsion from the House, said, among other things: "The vote of the majority of this House jtist taken transmits me to posterity as a man unworthy of a seat oa this floor." This is undoubtedly true, and posterity will be pretty certain to receive him exactly as the j tlOUse transmits him. Loii. Jour. aOUKKSK. Si Iii Cream Cheese rco'4 per SorereSgB by z h. ebon & on.

Mr. Hurly, formerljr of the Hurly House in this city and for many years a resident of Wabash, met with a serious accident on the excursion trip to Indianapolis Tuesday, lie was on one of the open cars in the re-tr of the train, and having a sudden attack of di-irrhoe.i he started (or the end of the car, with the obvious intention of getting off. The tra.ii was going at the rate of aout thirty miles an hour, and one or two persons took hold of him, rein nstrating upon the suicidal folly of the attempt, hut the old man eluded their grasp, and swinging himself over the end of the car, he heid on for a moment, released his hold and fell upon tbe truck. His head struck the cross ties, and he lay motionless upon the track until the train turning a slight curve hid him from view. The train was not stopped until its arrival at Zionsville, about a mile and a half distant, when a hand car was immediately dispatched to the scene of the accident. The o d man was found in an insensible condition, his skull fractured and his face horr.bly mu titated. He was still living yesterday, but there is the barest possibility of his recovery. Laf. Jour.
