prised, ; when visiting Ilönflörsön yesterday morning, to learn that our paper had taken down the. glorious name of Fillmore,' and sub8titutcd! in its place the. name of Fremont ' Yetjuch was the impression thbre, although not the belief among those personally acquainted with- the editor of this paper.' It has älso been suggested here, by " some of our good Democratic friends, that they would not be surprised at . any time to see uih a change roädo in the name at the head of the Journal. wVarV well !aware that these same "Demccrats" would be sorry to the bottoms of their corrupt political hearts to see us make such a hange yet we are not aware of any word we
?Iave"writtcn or spoken, which should give fTtflhnnre or' Buchanan men the slightest 'grouBds for their fears. ' We placed the name of Fillmore at the head 'of the Journal without consultation with othefs;but as an honest political conviction of our' own heart, believinz that his election to ,the Presidency would best advance the inter f ests öf the people and the country, if not prove the very salvation of the Union. We have kn "nn reason to chanze these views. Our convictions are even firmer now than when tht - names of the Old Line and Eepublican candidates were unknown. We can find no such glories entwined around 'the 'names of either Buchanan or Fremont, as should induce XjsVany other man to forfeit an honest allegiance to Fillmore. --.We can find nothing in hc) fast histories nor in their personal char-i t ' jcters and abilities, . nor in me principles mey "Ve'plresenCcftipulated to convince us that they c are 'better "fitted Jbr the Presidency of this Union,' ' than Millard Fillmore. On the xonvlrary,r, we", know by actual trial, Fillmore is 3hkt' which the most glorious result of the ex-, perimefit of trying Buchanan or Fremont, -might scarcely mike him while a"Pierce faill"ure"in the experiment would hasten us towards the gulf tf dissolution- With this expression ofl.bpinion, it is unnecessary to assure the ' readers of the Journal, that the name of Fill ; more will continue at the head of the Journal so jVjong as ho is a candidate.and stands firm to the - principles he at present represents. We advocated his nomination the day of his nomination we had his name nailed to the Journal mast head-; and we assure all interested those ' nails are clinched, and can't be drawn out.
' trir Gov.' Wright is to deliver that "same -- old speech" to the unterrified ot Vanderburg ; this week. During the presnt canvass, he has tacked on one more idea "that the Democrat--: ic party is the only real Free Soil party in exeis istence!" Doubtless, he is ohserving enough to . know which way the wind blows in Northern t .-i Indiana, and he is trimming his sales not only
to catch Old Line votes, but even those of the
. y. o-so called "Abolition party." His Excellency,
i.i and the would be Excellency, Willard, will both
i be laid on the stielt tnis lall, li tney are tan- - en down again very ßoon, the poople will be , .napping. ' - "7, ."ChT correspondent of the Pittsburg Des- " patch thus speaks of Chicago : "Its railroad ';'iV. depots are immense, and almost innumerable ; its drinking saloons no one could count, especially if he took a drink every time he counted ' a score; and over very many of them we -'" found 'Justice's Offices' inscribed the blind goddess generally having quarters in a second story, while Bacchus rule J in the ground floor. -1'" " - A queer arrangement, lutno doubt convenL: " ' ienti as saving transportation."

The day has gone by when men are to be fright ened by a name. I tie Ulc Line press may ; call those who condemn- tb .i outrage, AboHtionists, but the game will not win. With far more propriety may we call those northern men, who truckle to the South, Doughaces, for not only do the' show their blind obedience to party rule, but in this Sumner affair prove very clearly that they cannot discriminate be tween arrant owardice and true bravery. The telegraph dispatch at the head of this ar ticle is one of "the signs of the times. ' "Gag Law" Is not only, enforced in Kansas. ' It is felt even in the Capitol and in New York City. When shall we see the end? . a . A Nuisance. About, a hundred carrels of coal tar have been lying ön the wharf opposite O'Riley's wharf-boat for nearly two months. Besides giving out a suffocating odor, and thus being a very considerable nuisance from this cause, it has run down the wharf to the river, rendering that much of the wharf useless, and covering the water for a long distance below with oil and pitch. It should be removed. The Americans of Henderson county, Ky., are enthusiastic for Fillmore, as we learned during a short visit there. They are fighting the good battle with uhparalled zeal, and vigorously at work preparing for the State election to come off in two weeks. Col. Harlan made a speech at Henderson yesterday afternoon. Kentucky will give Fillaiofe & handsome majority- mark that. fXr-The deficiency in the French budget in the last three years is twelve hundred millions of francs. Seventy-six millions were spent in public buildings, fifty millions were paid out of the public treasury to keep down the price of bread in Paris to prevent riots, and the industrial exhibition cos; eleven millions. Despondency appears to mark the countenances of those who once claimed tobe "unterrified:" They say Willard was as "gentle as a sucking dove" in his speech at Moscow!
