' Daring uutto, an ilc xciu icu uiuiutcB alter wards, two-Sicillians went up to the polls and one of them, an unknown man, offered to vote His vote was challenged. . 1 he other Sicilian, a neavy-set, practical looking lellow, well known under the American alias of Joe Williams, asserted boisterously that his friend had a right to vote he knew him to be a legal voter. The judges still refused to receive the vote, and the Sicilian thereupon ran out into the street and raised a cry in his native language, the purport of which was, "Here, here! come quickly!" The cry was quickly responded to; for the members of the gang came running out of houses and alley-walls across the street, with drawn knives and revolvers, and commenced an indiscriminate firing and slashing at all the people in the street, and at the crowd around the polls in particular. An universal panic and stampede was the consequence; the polls and the street, all the way from Royal to Bourbon street, were cleared in a few seconds. By this onslaught, Mr. Norbert Trenagnier the clerk of the First district court, was, bad ly, perhaps mortally wounded; Mr. Leon Charvot was poignarded in the breast, but not dangerously, and Mr. La Trange, J r., was stabbed in the shoulder and shot in the hand. Mr. Trepagnier was drinking with Mr. Fabre in the coffee-house adjoing the po?ls; hear ing the firing outside he ran out and saw an acquaintance of his, a Democrat, with a revolver in his hand. He went up to him' in a friendly way to take the weapon from him, when Williams, the big Sicilian who raised the alarm, ran up to him and stabbed him in the breast and in the abdomen with a bayonet stuck on a wooden handle; and the same moment he was shot through one of his thighs and through one of his arms. Mr. La F range was running for life when he was shot and stabbed he continued his flight and took refuge in the shop of a bird-cage maker on St. Peter street; near the Corner's offise. Afterwards he went home in a carriage. He was not mortally wounded. The news of the Sicilian onslaught spread like wildfire through the city and infuriated Americans, came running from every quarter. Vengence , was the cry and the crowd started off in a frenzy after the swarthy-skinner assassins. They visited their well known" retreat, the Hotel de la Marina, on Old Levee street between the markets but the Sicilians disappeared like rats at their approach. . A general search was instituted, and finally Williams, the head assassin, with one of his crowd, was found concealed in an upstairs room. Both met a terrible and instantaneous death. Williams was perfectly riddled with bullets; and as he fell the bloody bayonet with which he

had stabbed Trepagnier fell ont of his boat--sleere. The rmme of the other- man vm.A .
