CITY OF EVANSVILLE. ! TT-r"-" - THUIISDAY MOrI5CG::::::::::APRIL. 24 if . . FOR IRESIDK.T, . HILLAUD FILLMOUE, Or NKW JTORK. j'jGC FOR VICE P.IKSIDKT. "AUDBEW JACKSON B01JELS0N, m .r:.-----v! or texsksskk.-- - : . - THE PAST, PKE3ENT AND.IUITJKE 01" I': - EVANSVILLE. -: Evansville was laid out and first settled in " the year lSlO. Its' chief attraction was, as a landing upon the Ohio for the Wabash country. Within four years afterwards it con'tained a population of four or five hundred, 'which afterwards rather diminished than increased, until 1835. .. : In tho winter of 1S33-6, amongst other internal" improvement acts, the Indiana Legislature passed a law, authorising the construction "of a canal, to connect the waters of Lako Erie, with those of the Ohio River at this place. At this time there were twenty places on the lower Ohio, of equal commercial im portance with Evansville. Her whole property, real, personal and mixed, if sold under the hammer, would not have brought a hundred thousand dollars clear, of incumbrances. Upon the passage of " the canal bill," public attention was attracted to this point ; and it was discovered that Evansville occupied the same relative position to Indiana, which Cincinnati did to Ohio, and, that in point of natural position, especially in proximity to important tributary rivers, she had the advantage of that city. It was then confidently expected, that the canal to terminate at Evansville. and connect her with the Lakes, would bo completed in tho course of three or four years. With, the rising prospects of the place, there sprung up all at once a great demand for her town lot3 and adjacent lands, and during the year, 1836-7, town lots which had been con? Bidered not worth the taxes, rose in market value till many of them were sold as high, or nearly as high as the price now asked for the same lots.; and this,, with but a few hundred resident population. The place grew in population, which was much increased by great numbers of laborers working on Ilia canal in the vicinity, till 1839, when it contained twenty eight hundred people. Then, in tho general commercial revulsion of that period, . the State of Indiana as well as most of her commercial men, became bankrupt.' All her works of internal1 improvements came' to a full stop, not oue of them finished or yielding the State any return,' save the M.' & I.' R. R., which produced a net revenue of eleven hundred dollars ! ',! r : : .:. J The canal ' stopped, the hopes of the town deferred, and most of 'her citizens, bankrupt, Evansville, without any wealth worth the naming, decreased in population and in the Value of her real estate, till 1842, when a new census showed a population of only ' 01'ghteen hundred. Thus, . it appeared, that in three years, from 1833 to 1842, through the com mercial crisis of that period, Evansville had declined in population from twenty eight hun dred to eighteen hundred or a littlo over one third- She then, under the influence of re turning credit and general prosperity, began to rally- An attempt at that period originated in Evansville, which was shortly successful, of getting a grant of lands from the general gocrnmont to complete the Wabash and Erie Canal to this point, and the prospect which that project afforded and which has since been realized, of the early completion of the Canal, gave Evansville a fresh start, licr improve ment at this time was not wild and spasmodic as before, but gradual and steady," and " has been uniformly maintained ever since 'And that improvement, stimulated by a firm con fidence in the strength of her position, and that Bhe was destined to be one of the great centres of coromeree of the Great West, has year after year, from 1842 to the present year 1856, all the while quickened its pace, and added.strength to its movements. : Iler early expectations of the completion of the W. & E. Canal have just been realized ; and in addition to that, she has by the help -of her sister towns in Western Indiana, con structed a Railroad, ; which runs up the Wa bash valley, still further (developing its marTelous resources, and rendering them tributary to Evansville, to even a greater extent than ever had bsen anticipated, and now, the daily journals of our town, can record day after day receipts by canal, by railroad, and by river, all from the broad valley of the Wabash, and the continenthas no valley of equal extent ajid fertility. . ',' ' ' ; But our Canal anl Railroad are only just in operation- The former, indeed, is not yet in full use, for sue 13 not yet used through her length, as a part of a great north and south avenue of trade, for the reason, that the navigation of ..the .'newly completed , parts, , has never yt been considered sufficiently reliable to justify the commercial asrangements for so using it. .When this canal shall be recognized throughout the country as having become reliable in its navigation, then will spring up a through carrying . trade upon . it, which will make it, to Evansville, all that has, ever teen predicted of it, notwithstanding that ome men, ignorant of the history of canals, think they are behind the age." Thus far, our South; with rivers, Railroads and canal torcity has only just bsgun to reap the advantages minating here; with a good climate and choan of these great works of internal improvement, j lots and la ads; with a good foundation laid as Since 1842, Evansville has grown with a year- j to capital and population; with a rapid-growth ly increased pace froiiiTeighteen hundred to j before one-half these advantages were possesäten thousand '. inhabitants. p.ovements under construction ? Already sinc3 their opening, the busines: of Evansville is increasing more rapidly by one half than ever before; and the present spring's business, . with every disadvantage from the great fall of produce and a stringent money market, is showing an increase far beyond any precedent. Thgro is no doubt but this place is far enough from every large city to insure her rapid growth as a great commercial centre. Madison,' New Albany and Lafaj'ette, all heretofore before us in population and busi ness, are yielding the palm to Evansville in present success and future prospects. Neither of those cities has been able to hold its former population and commerce under the date revulsion, whilst Evansville built more hou :es and better ones last season, directly in the face cf the drought and commercial crisis of the previous year, than ever before, and will construct an equal or greater number the present year under all the disadvantages of the season. ....... Her manufactures are already respectable, tier Iron Foundries and Machine Shops, just sprung up almost as by magic, are overflowing with orders. She manufactures lard oil, c:arse pottery ware, chairs, wagon and carriage hubs, sash and doors, shuck and hair mattrasses, cooper's ware, furniture, clothing, boots and shoes, tin anl copper ware, saddlery and harness, flour,, corn meal, oak and poplar lumber, wagons and carriages, plough.?, tobac co and cigar.?, malt liquors, marble mantels tombs and monuments, anl namjroui other things. Many of these branches of industry are just , started, and all are increasing an l prosperous. There are more than double the steam engines at work in Evansville to-day, and more than double the men employed in manufactories, that there were two years ago. - A gentleman of as much reading and universal information as almost any man in the West, predicted '. four years ago, that Evansville would be the largest city of the West in fifty, years, and he based his prediction , upon her already ascertained facilities for manufacturing, because, she was, in addition to . her commercial position, upon the extensive coal bads of the great western coal field, and in the heart of inexhaustable supplies of wood and timber and iron and food. Since then, and just lately, these coal beds have been perfora ted rigut unuer the euge ot the city, and though tho mine 'thus opened is not yet in extensive operation; it saved the city from deep distress and . privation during ; the . long frost of last winter. w'nen all other coal supplies were cut off; and only yesterday, this coal was pronounced by the officers of one of the. first steamers; and which has . taken the. coal repeatedly, the best steam coal they ever burnt. To insure against monopoly, and that we shall forever have cheap supplies of fuel, other excellent mines are opened on our canal, at from twenty to sixty miles distant, which nre weekly pouring their treasures into the - lap of Evansville, and both Green River and the Ohio just above us, are ready to do the same when ever such competition shall bo justified by the demand. , ' Our future supplies of iron are near us up the canal, up Green River, up the Tcnuessee a'l round us. What shall hinder us from manufacturing and selling cheaper than cities less favorably located? Our real estate and our rents are low in comparison with all the larger cities, and with the cities of our own State, lower than in Lafayette, Indianapolis, New Albany, and than they .were in. Madison. t .". Our highest business property ' has never been sold higher than from one hundred to one hundred and fitly dollars per front foot, and on such property houses do a business of a quarter of a million finnially. In Indianapolis, wlicre the wholesalo busi ness is not half what it is here, property has sold at three hundred dollars per foot, and is held Btill higher at this time. In the other Indiana cities named, it has sold higher than ever held at in Evansville. .The best residence proparty in Evansville can be got at from ten to forty dollars per front foot, according to proximity to business, whilst we know that do'uble the. highest figures has been asked and paid in other large towns in the State. The table land on which the city stands is all ' above the highest water mark of the Ohio river, is miles in extent, and the poor can accommodate themselves with ground at any price, according to their means within reach of their work, all the way down to 1 the very lowest possible' price. . . ... . r ,, rm .. - ... . i ... l lie city of Evansville is as healthr as any ,,r , . . city in the Western country, and her climate i. more favorable to health" less damp ; and l.lnv ih', n,f ( r .i v' 'Vf - UleaL than that of cities further North. . If, in addition to these advantages, any good manufacturing establishment wants an ample site on the bank of the river, close to the mouth of a coal mine, in a handsome and public situation, it, and more than one such establishment, can have such a situation on their own terms. From the present growth and prosperity of Evansville, we venture to predict that the census of 1S60 will show a population of at least twenty thousand. 07" The happy unsophisticated innocence of some of our friends in the interior is refeshing. In some cases it is rather tantalizing to our young bucks. : For instance at the circus, a young man of affectionate disposition from the interior cf the country, stood boldly in front of the mass of humanity, with his arm around the neck of his dosey, while she, sweet little innocent, not only seemed to think it all right, but rather appeared to like that part of the entertainment. They were just as innocent of doing anything to aggravate the feel ings of our youn: men as they could be. And so was that other couple who, out of doors, hot only stood this way in a big crowd, but occasionally indulged in by no means "stolen sweets," for they were loud old fashioned smacks. Bless their hearts," they were Jtapn', which probably they would not have been had they noticed the attention they drew.--"When ignorance is bliss, 'tis folly to be wise."
