' A fire commenced in tho upper part of the Artesan buildings, back of 43th street, destroying the entire buildings which formed a hollow square of five stories. Every part was occupied with workshops. Duval, lithographers, occupied one floor ; loss estimated at $10,000, insured for $10,000. He had forty steam presses and an immense stock, including lithographs of Perry's Japan expedition and government plates, worth $13,000. ' Other occupants were : Watts, silversmith, loss $3000, insured '; Gaskill, book -binder, lass $10,000, insured for $8000 S. & C. P. Warren, gold watch caso makers, loss $lo,000, insured for $5000 ; Updyke, gold chain maker ; George Heppard, jeweller, loss heavy ; Samuel Eken, Electo plater, and otners also lost heavy. The fire was so rapid scarcely anything was saved except from the lower Soors. Tho United States Hotel joined the buildings, and its destruction seemed inevitable The boarders fld.
