'."T - --- Tn Surope. The" Persia Sailed from New Tork on the 2d wiüitwö hundred and twenty-seven paasenesrs. Thus has commenced the nnual tide of travelers toward the eld world. Pace, and tho "good times' in prospect in Europe will induce the Yankee birds of passage to- visit the Crima tad Constantinople, while Petersburg and Constadt will be thronged with Americans, Thus will millions of American money be' cast abroad, and the citizens of old Europe will have an apportunity of seeing ' Uncle Sam's children. All things considered, we may reasonably calculate upon an unprecedented American passenger traffic to all the Atlantic steamers hence forward to Octobo meantime our home summer retreats seaboard and interior from the impulse of the campaign may anticipate full houses and a splendid seaton. Saratoga, Newport and Cape JLay may bo prepared for a rush, to say nothing of the. quiet resorts scattered every where through the East. For our own part we "shall stay at home and persuade ourselves that it is not fashionable to travel in summer! But Young America must see. Who cares? Have we not our Western graneries, our Southern cotton fields and our California gold mines? Ho! for the East; Paris, Stamboul, Constadt, and the Crimea! Amerloan Sleeting at Tlneennes. The Americans of Knox County will hold a meetih? at Yincennes next Saturday. It is anticipated that every part of the county will bo represented, and we hope various parts of the District will also be represented there. We should. v.ery much like to attend, and mingle with tho staunch Americans of Knox county ia friendly gathering but as we cannot, we can only wish them a pleasant time. The Americans of Vinceunes will extend a warm welcome to any of their friends from this city Djlegates will be appointed at this meeting to attenl tha People's Convention at the Capitol, on the 1st of May next. CCrThe Evansville Daily Journal is decid edly the most reliable paper that comes to this place. It contains the latest telegraphic nws and market reports, and is an invaluable pa per to the merchants of this vicinity. Terms, $6 per annum. By the way, friend Sanders, stir up that Sag Nicht Postmaster down your way. He frequently allows your daily to lay over on the regular mail! days, so that when we do get it, it is two or three days old- Such remissness of duty on his part has a tendency to injure jour paper here. INewburgh. Tribune. Both the P. M. here and ourselves try to hav the Journal mailed promptly, but accidents will sometimes happen on both sides. Our P. M. is not one of the P. M.'s who is dis posed to throw impediments in the way of public accommodation, because this accommodation sometimes assists papers opposed to him in politic. We have bd to thank him for J&aay favors. We appreciate the compliment Cf fte Tribune, and bvlieve it is deserved. tgr It is unnecessary to state that we have had no eastern mail since Saturday night. If there was any use in it we would indulge in "getting mad" as it is, we wait withpationce the Mtion of Fogy Campbell, who is responsible for this delay. Tho railroad company duly notified the department that the mail would
not be earned after the 1st of April. Had the . Post Master General done his duty, suitabls
arrargement would have been made to for wrd the mail after the 1st of this month. He cannot plead ignorance as an excuse.

The Law men of this State have endeavored. to justify their premeditated treachery to their party by expressions of doubt as to the devotion of Mr. Fillmore to tne American cause. In confirmation of their position, it bis been said, in the Albany State Register, an 1 elsewhere, that a certain letter written vy :Mr. F. to a Quaker gentleman in Philadelphia, j revealed tho fact that he did not act wiui, ana j support the American party in this State. : i la retutation oi ineso .wu .v"v'." m . . - - it d av hit I At taV in Iqjestionnasoeen given w iu puui.t, ua . sunjoinea. -" Zanders that have been directed towards the wrjter, and must cause his calumniators to ni(ie tneir neaas wiw sname. it wiu De rememberec. tnat severe aomestic ainicuon, togather with the fact that he had but recently rewrea irom me n.gness posinon in we nmtion, had withdrawn Mr. F. almost wholly from the political arena. Still in his retire - ment his heart beat response to the upheavm . a wm .? ng of the popular heart. The following letter s an effective and Statesmanlike defence of the position of the American partji and shows that while many who are denouncing him were , working in the ranks of our opponsnts, and against our candidates, Millard Fdlmora by his pen and his vote was giving practical expression to his devotion to the great cause in which we are embarked: Ar. Y. Courier. BcFFAto, N. Y., Jan. 3, 1855. Respected Fbiesd Isaac Newton: It would give me great pleasure to accept your kind invitation to visit i mlaclelpaia, it it were possible to make my visit private, and limit it to a few personal fr iends whom X . snouiu oe most happy to see; but I know that this would be out of my power, and I am therefore re luctantly compelled to decune yourinviuition, as I have done others to New York and Bos ton for the same reason. I return vou my thanks for your informa tion on the subject of politics. I am always happy to hear what is going forward; but in dependent of the fact that I feel myself withdrawn from the political arena. 1 have been too much depressed in epint to take an active part in the late elections. I contented myself with giving a silent vote for Mr. Ullman for Oovernor. While, however, I am an inactive observer of public events.I am by no means an indifferent one, I may say to you in the frankness of pri vate friendship, tnat 1 have for a long time looked with dread and apprehension at the corrupting influence which the contest for the focigu vote is exerting upon our elections. I bis seems to result from its being banded together, anil subject to the control of a few in terested and set fish leaders. Hence, it has been a subject of bargain and sale, and each of the great political parties of the country have been bidding to obtain it, and as usual in all such contests the party which is most corrupt is tne most successful, lbe consequence is. that it is fast demoralizing tho whole country; corrupting the very fountains of political pow er, and converting the ballot box that great palladium of our liberty into an- unmeaning mockery, where tne rights of native born citizens are voted away by those whe blindly follow their mercenary and selfish leaders. .The evidence of this is found not merely in the shameless chattering for the foreign vote at nearly every election, but in the large dispro portion of offices which are now held by for eigners atnome ana abroad, as compared with our native citizens. Where is the true hearted American whose cheek does not tingle sritb shame and mortification to see our highest and most coveted foreign missions, filled by men of foreign birth to the exclusion of native born? Such appointments are a humiliating, confession to the crowned heads of Europe, that a Republican soil does pot produce sufficient talent to represent a Republican nation at a monarchal Court. I confess that it seems to me with all du? respect toothers, that as a gen eral rule, our country should be governed by American bora citizen. . Let us give to the oppressed of every country an asylnm and a home in our happy land, give to all the benefits of equal laws, and equal protection; but let us at tha same time cherish as the apple of Our eye the great principles of constitutional liber ty, which few who have not had the good fortune to be retired in a free country, know how to appreciate and still less how to preserve.' - Washington, in that inestimable legacy which he left to his country his farewell addresshas wisely warned us to beware of foreign influence as tha most baneful foe of a republican government. He saw it to be sure in a different light from that in Which it now presents itself; but be knew that it would approach us in all forms, and hence he cautioned us against th insidious toiU$ of its influence. Therefore jrell for our owa akes to" whom this inyaluaM inhabitance of sclf-govenment has been left by our forefathers, as for the sake of tha unborn m.Kions who aro to inherit this land foreign and native let us take warning of the Father of his Country, and do what we can justly to preserve our institutions from corruption, and our country from dishonor, but let this be done by the people themselves in their sovereign capacity by making a proper discriminat'on in the selection of officers, and not by depriving any individual native or! foreign born of any constitutional or leal right to which ho is now entitled. These are my sentiments in brief; and although I have sometimes almost despaired of my country when I hare witnessed the rapid strides of corruption, yet I think I perceive a gleam of hope in the future: and now I feel confident that when the grtat mass of intelli gence m this enlightened copntry is once fullv J t j . . . . J. aroused, and the danger manifested, it wUL; saa n a. a leanessiy apply tao remedy, and brine back 1 i A . . the Government to the pure dav of Wash.: ington's administration ation. Finally, let us abopt the old Boman motto. "Sever dsn.;r f vVRepublic" Let us do our duty, and trust in that Providence which has so signally watched over and preserved us for the result. But I have said more than I intended, and much more than I should have said to any one but a trusted frienrl on T have no desire to mingle in political strife Knmembwr us kindly to yonr finally. andUUev me Truly y..nr friend.
