crrr of evansville. TUESDAY MOKXING,:::r::::::::APRIL. 1. FOR PRESIDENT, MILLARD FILLMORE, OF NEW YORK. FOP. VICE PRESIDENT, ANDREW J. DONELSON, OF TBVSESSF.B. PEE3SMAN 'WANTED. An experience! Pressman is wanted immediately at this office. FILLMORE MEETING NO. 2. TUESDAY EVENING, APRIL .1ST, AT APOLLO HALL. A meeting of the friends of Fillmore will be held at Apollo Hall, at the time and place above mentioned, for the purpose of receiving the Reports of tho Committees appointed at last Thursday Evening's meeting, and complet ing the organization of the FILLMORE CLUB. Oq this occasion the meeting will be addressed by JOHN HARLAN, ESQ., Assistant Elector for the State of Kentucky and by several of our own Speakers. A gene ral invitation i3 extended, and THE LADIES will be gladly welcomed. THE FILLMOSE MEETING TO-NIGHT. Let every friend of Fillmore recollect the Fillmore meeting to-night at Apollo Hall, and let every man who can spare a couple of hours attend this meeting. The Committees appoint ed at last Thursday night's meeting will re port, and the final organization of the Fillmore club be completed. The meeting will be ad dressed by John Harlan, Esq., Assistant Elec tor for the State of Kentucky, and by one or more of our own speakers. Let us have an other meeting like that of last week one which will do the soul3 good of all patriots. Let us make an exhibition of the strenth o Bound principles and of the Fillmore fooling Be there! Another Article from the Volistiote We publish to-day tho translation of an ar ticle which appeared in the Volksbote of last Thursday, we believe. It appears to be re ceived with favor by the more liberal Germans of the city by those who will not let a few scrub Old Liners in Evansville do all the thinking for the party. It may surprise smne Old Liners in this city, that any set of men can be found in the Democratic party here, who have independence enough of their own, to rebel aza'n t the dictation and iron rule of the man who lead3 that party by the nose. They doubtless tremble for tho fate of these rebels, and fear to grasp them by the hands in a public street. Tools and toadies themselves, they seem unable to appreciate the independent Spirit of true Republicanism. They stand in that same awe of despotism here, which pun iähes the political body of the rebel, as the sub jects of foreign despotism who are punished for disobedience in the literal body. They have no souls of their owu. For fear their master should call them and treat them as dogs, they dare not be men. And yet they are fiwning poodles, wagging their tails when he smile, and sticking them between their legs when he frowns. Such party hacks, such vile tools of a master, will throw up their hands or paws in horror, at the idea of a Democrat, and especially of a German Democrat, actually de claring himself independent of this master. Let us assure these party poodles, that there are men in the Democratic party, although we are unable to see how men and free men, can Stay in it. A few years ago, we could understand this, but we cannot now. A man who was a "Democrat" five years ago, is not a "Democrat" now, unless he has changed his principles on many important points. But we ask the attention of readers to this article from the Volksbote, and especially the attention of all Old Liners. This Mr. Chandler, who, aocording to tho Journal, "loathes and despises" the Democratic party, went into a Democratic meeting in Evansville and begged permission to be alio vve-j to participate in its proc3Ah:. Tobe sure, tne meeting, probably suspecting the sincerity of his professian as an "Old Lino Whig," refused to take him into their counsels and this no doubt accounts for his '-loathing and despising" of the Democratic party. AT. A. Ledger. Mr. Chandler arose in a Democratic meeting, and asked if Old Line Whigs would be permitted to assist in making the nominations for the city ticket. He explained himself by Baying, that old Whigs were always cordially invited by the Old Liners to help them elect their tickets, and they would like to understand whether they might not help make this ticket. " Mr. C. was told with great emphasis thatoW Whigs could have nothing to do with making the nominations. We wish oi l Whigs all over the State, when beseeched to support the Old Line State nominations, just to recollect this little incident at Evansville. Their vote are very important to their old enemies, but they are not permitted to have anyting to do with designating the men for whom they are to vote. How. Davy Crockett's Widow. AVe would desire fully to impress every young man with the importance of acquiring a thorough and practical knowledge of accounts. He can gain in a few weeks in this institution, a mass of knowledge which he could scarcely acquire in a life time, merely by experience in business, because he learns not from the expe rience of one man for a few years, but that of many men in different kinds of business. He may be ever so well educated in other respects, but he cannot be a commercial man until he has a commercial education. The spring session, of this school is just corn et- ti .1 r i 1. , C mencms. we wouiu mcreiore auvibu &ucii vi our young friends, either in the city or coun try, as may wish to acquire a thorough and practical knowledge of accounts, and who may wish to obtain a profession equally as honorable, and it may be as profitable as any of the learned professions, to determine at once to attend a course of lessons in this College. Our word for it, you will never regret the time and money spent in acquiring it. Those commencing before the middle of May, can complete a full course by the close of the present session. We take pleasure in recommending Mr. Eehm as a gentleman as well as an excellent teacher, and we know that he spares no personal attention in advancing his pupils. Departei. The Californians to whom we alluded yesler day, started at 3 o'clock in the afternoon on tho long trip. They nnmbered fourteen in all including one lady, Mrs. Ward, and three children. No better company ever left this county, or this region, for California, than this company. It was composed principally of young men of excellent characters and standing and accustomed to hard work. If they keep their health, they will bring home good ac counts of themselves. Our old friends Ira A Fairchild and John Ward will keep a fatherly look out over the youngsters. The last we heard as the train slowly moved off, was a bi shout for Fillmore! A large number of our citizens, including many ladies, were at tho depot to bid the crowd farewell. If good wishes may prosper them, they will certainly be sucessfui. Insurance Companies. . A law exists among the statues of Indiana says the Indianapolis Journal, requiring all Foreign Insurance Companies, through their agents, to file with the Auditor of State, an exhibition of the condition, &c, of each company doing business within the limits of the State, snd this exhibit is required to be published iu some newspaper. This public statement, duly sanctioned by the Auditor's signature of endorsement, is the legal sanction of the validity of Foreign Companies. Policies issued by Companies that have not complied with the law in this respect, are plainly void, and the Companies be3rond the reach of law. It would be well enough to inquire in regard to the qualifications of Insurance Companies, before risking property under the protection of their policies. OCT'-fhe organ of the Sheriff is a little vexed that the President of the Fillmore meetinsr here last week, was an English born man, and one of a committee Irish born. The meeting was not a "Know Nothing meeting" as is charged, but a meeting of the friend-3 of Fill more, without respect to party or nativity. There will be another meeting of the same kin-I this evening, and we shall expect to hear more swearing among the Old Liners about it. We fear they will be a very miserable set of christians by the close of the Campaign. They will have to do penance the rest of their lives if they expect future happiness, after all their swearing of this canvass. Laborers for the Louisville axd Nashville Railroad. The steamer Interchange, from Wheeling had about fifty laborers, with their families, horses and carts for the Louisville and Nashville Railroad at Bowling Green. They had been last employed on the Northwestern Virginia Railroad. They were all Irish, but evidently of a better class. Zoif. Jour. The work on this road appears now to be going on vigorously. The contractors are obtaining laborers from every quarter by paying a good, price thus showing their disposition to push forward the work. This road will prove an important enterprise toLouisville. The work oa the Henderson and Nashville Kailroad also progressing fast. 07" Sunday evening we had rain, accom- J -,! , , , -r, . , , , j mv, im t. vaiuci bscame colder, and yesterday morning the ground was frozen pretty hard. Nothing but the admonition in the most pleasant words, to deal honestly and j fairly, to nominate the worthiest and best men in the Conventions, and to leave private quarrels out of public atfairs. And has it come so far, that one should avoid being suspected of having written such things, and that for a few well-meaning words one should have to fear being treated to such stinking effluvia, as the Enquirer discharged at me? I ask you and every honest Democrat, provided it has come , i tlti,L. If ww ÄvliArfatinn nnt " .-.fr.fi nA 9 Does there exist a free press or not? Have we freedom of opinion or not? If a citizen has the right to utter his opinion, then 1 had the ht to enumerate the reasons why I would vote for Walker; but the Enquirer is of a dif ferent opinion, he calls me a despicable character, a corruptible man, bought and paid by Walker. He also says, that 1 kept in the dark, knowing that my name and the endorse ment of the Journal would suffice to condemn all those, for whom he writes. And in to-dav's number he calls mo a weak head, a friend of the traitors, and myself indi rectly a traitor and destroyer of Democracy Is not this Russia, with the knout Ibr the exhortinz tcnsiie? Is it destruction of De mocracy, when I beggingly exclaim, be hon- j est, deal fa rlv! Do not bung the great pnn-1 ciplcs of Democracy, which built up our coun try, in contempt by unworthy action; behold, we have enemies, who makes capital out of our; faults, who reproach us with corruption, and charge our sins upon the noble platform of De mocracy for the purpose of injuring it; show them by your action, that 3'ou call upon them to point out to you a single unfair and undemocratic deed. Elect good and honest men for officers, and elevate an office to such a degree of honor, that the noblest and best of the people need not be ashamed of them. Prevent for God's sake, and for the high reputation of of our country, as well as for the good of posterity, the degradation of offices; prevent that one should not dare to touch an office, but with gloves on. Solomon says: When God wants to punish a country, he punishes her with a bad government. , Do not bring forth candidates like throwing so man- dice, but choose them carefully, and let thts most respected men of the city give the'ir counsel and opinion. Do not transform the canvass into a raca-course; where for the sake of winning a bet you chase your runner and play tricks on your opponent. It is a contemptible custom to calumniate and slander one's opponent, and thus to exalt one's self at the expense of others. I have not done so with Seymour, why does the Enquirer with Walker in sucli an unworthy, merciless manner? Messrs. Editors, this was about the spirit of my first article, and I cannot conveive, how the destruction of Democracy can be found in it, or how any one can fear the suspicion of its authorship? And then I would ask you; have you read anything in my article, that resem bles an approval of the Journal's courser Certainly not. No event, be it ever so sad a one, has hurt my inmost soul so much as this American or K. N. movement. It is true, it hurts personally to know one's self among the despised class; it crushes the courage and generates feelings of suspicion and deiiancj between those, who should live together in harmony, but this is nothing in comparison to the disadvantages, the country suffers from it. Our country is to-da-, in proportion to her size, less thickly peopled than in the time of the wars of Independence, and therefore immigration is just as much needed now as then. But should the K. N. carry out their designs, we shall not only see this cut off, but also sec the emigration from the United States begin, and we thereby strengthen our principal enemy, England. But it is not to be denied, that this party since its birth has assumed a much milder appearance, aud I should like to see everything avoided that tends to increase their obstinacy. I would bless that day, on which that old familiar feeling would again take place.- I am opposed to the eternity of punishment ana also to the eternal reproaches of suffered wrongs. But what I sai 1 in regard to the Enquirer, does not mean that paper should give up the battle, but only conduct it in a more dignified manner. There are better and more affectuai weapons, than mere piling up of abuse. Cna satisfaction I have received by my article, is, the declaration of all our papersthat they are incorruptible, and that quiets me on this point. I have therefore only to add that neither am I bought nor paid for by Walker, and that I was so little acquainted with Well's affairs, that I even did not know that his mother supports herself. But then this involuutary lie gives precious stuft for making capital of. Now if I should submit the question to the Enquirer editor whether Smith G. would have become Sheriff without certain promises,
