nrnitl. ADD. H. SANDEES, EDITOE. . . j CITY .OF; EVANSVILLE. FRIDAY MORNING, :'::::::::::::MARCII i FÖK PRESIDENT, JJ1LLARD FILLMORE, OF NF.W TORK. - FCm VICE PRESIDENT, ANDREW J. DONELSON, : , OF TUVNESSKR The Cincinnati Commercial The Fillmore Feeling, &o. The Cincinnati Commercial is a paper of the Horace Greelv stripe. It is indeed a close imitator of Horace Greely, at least as close as the short mental legs of the Commercial editor Yf ill permit him to follow the long strides of Greely. He certainly presents at times a rather ; amusing; spectacle as he pit-pats and puffs and' heaves, to keep within sight of his leader,' whilo T Horace strides on uncontwious apparently of the existence of his Western ; imitator. .Horace Greely is generally found is opposition to every popular excitement which i.4 taking hold of the minds of the people, on the ground that there must be a reftcti(Jn,:and then he will be found on the popular side. The Commercial is trying on this same policy. 'It oppose ( the "Know Noth ings", In imitation of Greely it became intensely "black Republican" under his lead, and ' now it is actually trying to step on Horace' heels in its eagerness to catch up with him. in opposing the late nominations of tha American party. The only reason we sec why the Commercial cannot become the Tribune of the West, ia. accordance with its evident ambition, is simply because it has'nt got a Horace Greely at its head. The Commercial thinks the nomination of FiUmore has been received with a shocking degree of coldness and apathy in the Free States. We fear the Commercial's exchanges are composed almost entirely of Old Line and extreme Republican papers. Its remarks about the feeling in Indiana towards Fillmore, illustrate that its comments on the same feeling in other States, aro more prejudiced than correct. It says of this State: . '. "In Indiana some half dozen journals, mostly country" weeklies, with limited influence, constitute the strength of FiLLMonune wspapordoro." Ia Indiana, there are probably twenty papers comprising some of - most influential in the State and five Dailies, each with a Weekly and several with Tri-Weekly editions, warmly supporting Fillmore and Donelson . We have already published a list of sixteen papers, all influential in their respective neighborhoods, and all just as honest and patriotic and zealous in the support of the American nominees, as the Commercial or any other Eepublican paper can possibly be in the support of its candidate for the Presidency. The Commercial is either shamefully ignorant of the feeling for Fillmore in this State, or it purposely misrepresents the truth. We presume it is no more correct in the expression it gives to the feeling in other free States. In speaking of the feeling in New York, it is grossly mistaken in saying the friends of George Law generally refuse to go for the nominations. The Law Americans in the Generally Assembly endorsed the nominationthe same in the State Council. All over the State they are giving their acquiescence "Live Oak" clubs are changing their title to Fillmore clubs. The Law men opposing the nomination now, aro exceptions to the great mass of Law's friends. Tho Albany Register is the only American paper in New York of any prominence which has refused to endorse the nominations. The Commercial cannot win in this game, and it might as well bo stop pod at once. An Opportune Sentiment. The New York Express says: Such of our Milesian fellow-citizens as don't believe in "Sam," it will be remembered, resolved themselves into a Civil-and-Religious-Liberty-Mu tual-Admiration Society, at the Astor House, on the anniversary of Washington';. Birth Day; and in the course of the evening, a letter, purporting to have been written by George Washington Parke Custis, was read, enunciating sentiments so coincident with those en tertained by the "furriners." at the dinner ta ble, that it was received, naturally enough, with the most uproarious demonstrations of applause. In a theatrical phrase, "It brought down the house." As the Astor House celebration, is to be repeated, hereafter annually, we beg leave to present to the President, in order that it may be read and applauded tho following toast, offered by George Washington Custis, at a linner given at Georgetown, D. C, just after the election of General Pierce: Honor to whom honor is due." let others Uail the rising sun, i ' We how lo him whose raco is run. F1LL-MORK, KILI.-MOUK aye fill to the brim, f A health to the mun of the .Nation, FILLMORE, FILLMORK, we drink unto him. Who 0 nobly has flll.d his high station. Or-A big Ratification meeting was held at St. Louis last Monday night About five thousand . persons were present. More enthusiasm was never exhibited at a political meeting than was there shown for Fillmore. The mooting was presided over by Gen. Xathan Ranney, a soldier of the war of 1S12, and all his life, until the inauguration of the American Party, a pillar of JefFersonian and Jacksonian Democracy. . CrHon. Lewis D. Campbell, of Ohio, who received a heavy vote at one time a& Iiepubli can candidate for Speaker, is doing good service for Fillmore and DodcIsoii.

S." of Eoonville thu3 writes to us: - ' "In your criticism on my recent note you say I charged Mr. Fill.nore with improper motives in my communication some weeks ago. I feel sure you are mistaken I believe he pursued the course in 1850 that his judgment approved, and furthermore, that he was backed by Clay and Webster.. I, together with a majority of the people of the North, thought they were all wrong. I believe the)' were deterred from aoing the North justice by Texas threats to send an army to New Mexico to subjugate it. . "I have great respect for those of my family that are said to belong to the Americans, for my neighbors ofthat party, and for you." What reason has our esteemed friend to believe the majority of the people North thought the great statesmen who established the com promise of 1850 were wrong? On the contrary we believe that but a small minority north thought any such thing. Our reasons for be lieving so are that the pres3, the great ex ponent of public opinion, was almost entirely silent so far as rebuking these statesmen was concerned that the country at once sunk into profound rest so far as the slavery question was concerned that neither Whig nor Democratic party opposed the compromise that, in fict, but few other than thoseknown as Abolitionists, spoke harshly of Clay, Webster or Fillmore, for favoring this compromise. Mr. Fillmore is Vibqixia. The American nominee is more than acceptable to the American party in the Old Dominion. We find the following in the Richmond Whig of last week: ,. We take pleasure in citing the fact that the Petersburg Intelligencer and the Lynchburg Virginian, both uncompromising . Southern Uights papers, and whese views on the subject of slavery so thoroughly coincide with our own, have nailed the flag of MILLARD FILLMOllE to their mast-heads and pledge themselves to exert all their power and energy to secure his triumphant election. We believe all the Whig and American papers of the State, without exception, will le found to be more than satisfled with the nomination of that true and tried patriot and statesman, and will enter upon the work of the canvass with unusual diligence and zeaL American Victories. An election for burgess, assistant burgesses, and five commissioners took place in Williamsport, Washington county, Md., on Monday week last. Both parties had tickets, and entered into the contest with spirit, but the American ticket carried the day by an average majority of 31. At the municipal election held in New Bedford, Mass., on tho 3d inst., George Howland, Esq., the American candidate for the mayoralty, was elected by a majority of 40 votes. fj7"Wo pub'.ish to-day an interesting Kansas letter from our regular correspondent, and hope to give another in a few days. He enclosed a letter to Ex-Gov. Heeder, of Kansxs, now in Washington, which he feared to trust to the mails from the Territory direct. A nice state of affairs, truly. It appears the ruffians have not only control of the telegraph wires bat of the mails too. 03-The width of the Ohio River at Evans,"ille, has been ascertained by Mr. Moore, Engineer, to be, from bank to bank, 2,816 feet; width of surface of water, 2,552, or 88 feet less than a half mile. This, sa3rs the Journal, is a greater width than the Mississippi at St. Louis can boast. Inl. Jour. If the Ohio had a little less width and a little more water at Evansville, and other points, during certain seasons of the year, we think there would ba more room for boasting. . Wabash Ex. Well, the Ohio ain't in the habit of getting dried up in the summer time, anyhow, like a stream that passes Terre Haute and loses its waters in our river. Tha Ohio i3 rather a I navigable looking creek just about this time, although in the dry season it frequently bars the progress of big boats. fjrThe Ratification meeting at Louisville last Tuesday night, was attended by about 3,000 persons, more than half the voters of Louisville. The utmost enthusiasm prevailed. Strong resolutions endorsing the nomination of Fillmore and Donelson, were adopted. Wise on Fillmore. During the canvass last spring in Virginia, Mr. Wise, the present Governor, declared from the stump, before thousands of Virginia voters of all parties, that the administration of Millard ' Fillmore was " WasJiington U7;e." words.
These were his very!g;nes
Withdrawn. Geo. V. McCleary, Demo- . cratic nominee for Secretary of State in Iowa, has ' withdrawn from the canvass. It seems - j that the Democrats couldn't swallow him, be cause he had belonged once to the Know Noth ings. So he backed out.
KANSAS COSSESPOJfDESeE.-
Doxiphax, K. T., Feb. 22. j Dear Journal: I should have written to I you immediately on my arrival from Missouri, ! but was unable to tret any authentic news from , the seat of war, and did not like to send you 1 f thousand ramors afloat until r foun(J out the truo state of the case i Things have about reached a climax, and the r , Browing more apparent. The seat of war has changed from Lawrence to Stranger Creek, and the obnoxious band of Abolitionists this time are composed entirely of Western men, most of them from Missouri. The origin of the trouble was in this wise: A band of ruffians called the Kickapoo Bangers, from Weston, Mo., went out there to take the polls from the citizens, but in the attack which they made on the citizens, they lost one man and had several wounded, whereupon they beat a hasty retreat to Missouri. The next day they muster ed a crowd to go and avenge the death of Cook, (the man they had lost in the melee) but when they got out on Stranger they could find no one but a gentleman by the name of Brown. A portion of the party scoured the country in search of the men, while the remainder enjoy ed themselves in cutting Brown into small pieces with hatchets. Brown was one of the best fellows in the world, and was most brutally and inhumanly murdered because he happened to have a different political opinion from these scoundrels. Freceived a despatch from Leavenworth this morning, dated Feb. 17th, of which the following is a copy: "I told you in my last that the Kickapoo Bangers contemplated mak ing an attack upon the citizens of Stranger this has proved true. They pretended to have notified sixty men to leave the Territory by the 15th inst, who having failed to do so, were to have justice dealt out to them by Judge Lynch. Such was the anxiety of the Rangers to again have their hands imbrued in human blood, they could not let the time expire, but assembled near Spark's on Wednesday, but did not find him at ho.ne. He, having heard of the intended attack, was with the rest of his friends, who had assembled and were prepared to defend themselves. Eight of the band went to his house, talked of buying his claim, &c, then took alittleboy out and threatened to kill him if he did not tell where his father was. Not being able to get him they left a written notice for the family to leave by the 10th of March. They then returned to Missouri, being too weak to attack the settlers. On Friday messengers were sert to Platte City and throughout Tlatte County to distribute an article in the Herald, (Gen, Eaton's organ) which stated that the Free State men on Stranger (thus driven together for self-protection and defence by the most inhuman mob ever assembled in these U. S.) had built a fort and were there congregated, bidding defiance to all law and order and inviting a collision with the law and order party. Notwithstanding the exaggerated reports and lying appeals, Missouri did not respond very liberally to the call.. However, they are to make an attack today, and went out for that purpose. Feb. 18 Despite the untiring efforts of the Rangers for the past week, they have failed to raise men enough to attack the settlers, and as it seems to bo the intention to clear the Ter ritory of Free State men, tho officers are try ing to get the Governor into it again. McMeekin sent a messenger to the Governor re questing authority to call on the militia again No answer has been received yet, but as Wood son is the acting Governoryou will reasonably surmise, from his former conduct, that he will grant their request Things may now be ad justed, but we must look out for squalls." You may place reliance on the above des patch. A gentleman from Stranger arrived here to day. He says there are 301 Free State set tiers encamped on Stranger, and they are building forts and cay they will die before they will be driven from Kansas for their Free State opinions. Our cause is getting the sympathies of almost the entire people of Kansas. None but the most worthless and abandoned of the towns in Missouri will enlist against us. The river will break up in a few days. God grant that the North may pour her thousands of inhabitants into Kansas. We have got to fight, but we are almost strong enough now to cope with all the marauders that can be collected against us. G. A. C. fjtrlsaac G. Burnet, brother of the late J udge Jacob Burnet, of Cincinnati, died last Tuesday in that city, in the 72d year of his age. He was one of the oldest and most esteemed citizens of Cincinnati. A Handsome Return. Ambrose Foster, of Lake Mills, in Wis., who invented the lime and sand pressed brick, has already realized 100,000 from his patent. So says the Elkhorn Independent. fJ7"The receipts of the American Tract Society up to the 1st ult., are about $10,000 in advance of last year, to the same date. fj7"The Hon.
