üiintal; C3 ADD. H. SAJTDEBS, EDITOB. - CITY OF EVANSVILLE. JFFIURSDAY MORNIXO; :::::::MAKCH 13. FOR PRESIDENT, ; ! MILLARD FILLMORE, ' ' ' ' " or y KVT YORK. FOR VICE PRESIDENT, .-ANDREW. J. DONELSON, "! .', City Directory. We have long as a business community, felt i the necessity of a City Directory, both as a ; personal convenience to business men, at home and away, and to make our city more generally known abroad. Indianapolis has a fine ; Directory in book form, illustrated with handsome engravings, containing a complctedist of the citizens, the cards of business houses, and 'classified lists of those engaged in all depart- , inents of business. This Directory -can be ; found at every hotel of any importance in the State, and other places of resort over the coim- ' try, and forms a general advertisement for that .city and its business wherevcT this Directory my bo placed. Indeed, it forms a better advertisement for the importance of the city than eny Other plan that could be devised. A similar Directory of Xew Albany is now in press, and will soon be issued. Theso Directories were gotten up by Messrs. Grooms and Smith, who are now engaged in compiling the proper facts and information to'makc a complete State Gazetteer. "We have closely examined the Indianapolis Directory. It is just jrecisely the kind of work our city wants. " We are glad to announce that Ulr. Smith, of the above mentioned firm, is now in our city with the intention of getting up a complete business Directory of Evan&viile, if he can receive the proper encouragement. He will take a correct census of the city while engaged in his work. The Directory will contain in the first p'ace.Jihe place of residence of every adult inhabitant, alphabetically arranged, with the placo of business of those engaged in business. By referring to this the location of any inhabitant of the city may be found. A list of business establishments of every description will be given in classified order; a complete chart of the city and its enlargements; a handsome engraving of the city; engraxing3 of public buildings, &c. The engravings in the Indianapolis Directory are of tho finest order and finish, and very costly. And in addition to all this the business cards of such of our merchants, mechanics, manufacturers, &c, as will hve them inserted at a stipulated price, which is so low that no one can offer reasonable objections to it. Tho profits arising from these cards are all upon which tho publishers rely for remuneration. They will be conspicuously displayed, and inserted right in the body of tho Directory, so as to prove most valuable to advertisers. After the work is published, and it will be very neatly bound, the publishers will Bend a copy at their own expense to every hotel in the State, and sell conies to advertisers for a lowjirico. This is an enterprise which cannot be too highly appreciated by those who really have at heart the prosperity of tho city. There is no citiien who, if asked to subscribe for a Directory, without any remuneration, as much as he is asked Ut tho insertion of a conspicuous card, should notat once give tho amount. But they are only asked in Ais case to subscribe the card of their house, and pay a moderate sum for its insertion in this book. We trust every citizen will give this enterprise his cordial support. Mr. Smith will at once commence calling upon business men to ascertain what support will bo given to this enterprise. Secretary of State. We perceive that Mr. J. W. Dawson's name, of Fort Wayne, has been suggested by a numfcür of papers as a proper one to run on the Peoplo'3 Ticket for Secretary cf State. Mr. Dawson is the editor of the Fort Wayne Daily Times, and a gentleman of ability, as well as of excellent private standing. We hope he may receive tho nomination. We have no doubt he would fill the office with honor to himself, and to the entire credit of those who would bo called upon to give him their votes. If tho rest of the ticket is made up of equally good men, no man, Republican or American, could well refuse it his hearty support. ,, OCrThe e litor of the State Sentinel who made the gross, and as falsa as undeserved, personal allusions t the editor of this pper, in the Sentinel of the 11th, illustrates that whether we are a gentleman or not. he is not one and that whether or not we are a judge of virtue, he is a proficient in vice. lie dare not tray the half before our face he has said in an editorial. If he thinks so, he can Hie the oc casionof our v rat to the Capitol in a short time, to try the experiment. fjT-Tho National Intelligencer compliments Ctov. Wrigh ; for his late Kansas letter. Why don't Cottom, of the State Sentinel.rebuke the Intelligencer for thus complimenting a "tielfpuffer" and "an arrant demagogue?" Cottom some little tiuae ago called Governor Wright by these endearing expressions, and he should not remain quiet while the -Governor is receiving from a high source compliments due only honest men. fj7"Dr. Ross, of Kentucky, brought us yesterday some of the finest specimens of yellow flint corn we ever saw. The ears were very
large, cobs small, graiu large and the clear flint. Jacob Gottleib was the lucky man. We promTbey are but an ordinary sample of a great jisc him he has got a good picture. If he don't many acres of corn he is now gathering. j think so, he has gott.kib to let it alonq.
To the County Commissioners of Vanderburgh ! County: " T G extremes: As I am one of tl e many interested, it is with due deference to your honorable body I ask the following questions relative to the contract with Mr. Roquet, for the building of the Court House and Jail: I lias the County paid the Superintendent, Mr. John Hcwson, four hundred dollars for : services rendered since the expiration of the I time specified for the completion of sakl contract?-.! so, M ho foots the bill Vanderburgh County or the contractor? j 7s it -a fact that tho roof of the new Jail is now'lenking, so that the prisoners who arc confined in the Jail are wet by any rain that fall?, jin consequence of the work being done in a
worthless manner and has the Sheriff been asking to have the same repaired?. If Mr. Hcwson, as- Superintendent of the j building of the Court House and Jail, has been so remiss in his duty as to suffer the work to be botched up with leaking roofe and other imperfections, -would it not be better to have a superintendent who -would do his duty regardless of party cliques and favorites? Tho above is respectfully asked by A TAX PAYER. OiT"The Jackson county Democrat says that at a certain region, a ball was "set apart" for a certain occasion. The occasion "ai-rove" but the dancers did not, at least the female portion of the idea -of a ball was abandoned. -and the meeting turned into a prayer meeting, from which sprang a vigorous revival, which is yet in progress. Xutts and the Darkies. The Cincinnati Commercial tells the following-story: "And here an incident, related to us as occurring during the awful moments when the Henry Lewis was sinking a.id breaking, suggests itself to us. It is not wholly authentic, but is worth telling anyhow. Marshal Butts, of Covington, who had charge of the negroes, is stid to have been inflated somewhat with the importance of his position, and talked of his charge as his niggers, and displayed an immense amount of cutlery and fire arms, with which he expressed hiniFolf resolved to slaughter whole armies of abolitionists. And it happened that he exchanged some sharp words with a gentleman on the steamer about the Fugitive Slave case, &c. When the accident occurred he was in his room, and one of the tables rolling against his door, he could not get eut, and yeiled tremendously for assistance. Some persons heard him and went to work cutting a hole through the roöf to let him out. The most active of those so engaged was the man with whom he had the quarrel. When a hole was made large enough to let the rescner and the prisoner communicate w ith each -other, but not sufficient to crawl through, the man with the axe learned for the first time vhom he was laboring'to save, and called irc--"Hnllo, BuH.s,is .this you? D n you, if I'd known that, you might have drowned. And (after a moment's reflection) you shall anyhow if you won't give 3'ourword to let those nigtrers go." i here was no time to be lost, and Butts, fearing that he might be left to perish, said "To tell the truth now, I don't own the niggers. If I did, I'd-let'em go. I'm only the agent." . "Well," sakl the man holding the axe of deliverance or death, "take the irons off them anyhow." That Butts agreed to do, and the opening being enlarged, he crawled out, and began to inquire with some anxiety: "'W here's them d n niggers?" and was much gratified when ho found that only tho baby was lost. Mr. Butts informed us, that he took the shackles off the negroes, and then rushed forward to save himself) when he was cut out. IIo had in the first place been released from his room by one of tho officers of tho boat, We presume tho abovo story was made up for the-occasion by tho informant of tho Commercial. But it is a pity to spoil rt. C7We publish tho following "by request," but it attaches entirely too much importance to the subject on which it treats: For the Journal Mr. Editor: This article which I have penned for your Journal, without any desire whatever for literary notoriety or public attention may be called an extravaganza or anything else as "it best pleases the dear people's taste, or inclination This is not a biography ,a histori cal romance or literary gem, but it may be an exposition of my ignorance, with respect to an etfusion of Mr. Zebulon M. J. Carter "the wife," published in the Enquirer of the 10th inst. I am not an ignoramous or fool, neither do I wish to hurt anv person's feelings, or in jure his character, or place a veto on his writ ing for papers. But the fact is, I am really afraid there is dishonesty in the would beHierary's camps.- I have been suffering under the almost convincing thought, that Mr. Z. M. P. Carter has acted the plagiarist, and to use no stronger words, he copied that article from some other paper. Now we ask did "he write that same etfusion and contribute it to "the piper Ark? And was it copied in Stone's Gar den City, Cnicago: Js this the first time this was ever published: e do not fand fault with the composition its tender enough got enough loriivencss, or tue spirit in it sounds will to jead it. We sympathise with the man that cannot express his thoughts, his ideas, be they how ever exalted, however base, in his own lan guage. We feel from the lowest depth of the heart a current of purest compassion springing up in our throats for that man who struggles hard to build up an honest reputation as a writer, but can't without purloining from the writings of another. But we will close; and dear sentimental, affectionate Mr. Carter, please answer our questions and oblige yours. Those who wish to know the truth of what I have said I refer them to volume 1st; 4th quarter, yet I cannot give the exact number, but if necessary we can name tne number ot the paper. We find the two almost verbatim. Mr. Carter has made a few slight alterations which do not enhance the beauty of it, and made some little insignificant additions. DNALOP. Mr. Fillmore was our first choice for President, and we believe he is the -first choice of a large majority of the Americans of Indiana axd of the Union. A'. Albany Tribune. "It will be seen, from our telegraphic report that the American Conventional Philadelphia, nominated unanimously, Millard Fillmore for President, and Andrew Jackson Donelson, for Vice President. This news will send a thrill of pleasure through the heart-of the nation, for every American son and daughter must feel emotions of joy, at the thought of havingsuch glorious and renowned leaders, in the coming campaign. Yincenrtes Gazette. "As they have nominated our men, we are highly pleased at the result, and hail ths same as an omen of victory next November over the cohorts of Old Lineism. There is no ticket that could iio selected that would suit us better than the above, and we feel confident it will suit the Union-loving portion of our citizens. I'aoii Constitutionalist. We congratultte the American party North, South, East and West, over the iclule Republic, on this nomination, believing that it speaks their voice and that it is a response to their warmest feelings. If we cannot elect Fillmore; it is idle to talk ofj.ny other name as one with which we might have attained success. Ezansville Journal. Never, since the commencement -of our editorial career, has an event occurred which has given us more unalloyed satisfaction -than the nomination of Fillmore and Donelson for the Presidency and Vice Presidency. Using Snn Visitor. It is almost nee lless for us to say that this ticket meets our entire approbation and will receive our cordial support both as an editor and a private citizen. 'Grcencastle Banner. With joy our pen sterns to leap from word to word os we announce the nomination, by the American convention at Philadelphia, of Millard r ilhnore for tb; I residency, and Andrew J. Donelson for the Vice Presidency. Our best hopes are fully realized. Washington (Daviess co.) Telegraph. We to-day nail to our mast-head the names of Millard Fillmore, for tho Presidency, and Andrew J. Donelson, for the Vice Presidency. Xo name could have been presented more acceptable the American people than that of Mr. Fillmore. Corydon Aryus. It was farthest from 011 r thoughts when we made the simple announcement in our last issue in refeiencj to the nominee, that Fillmore was the man, but it is true it is a living reality, and we take pleasure in placing his name upon our banner as tho m?n above all others that we should have selected for that distinguished position, had the choice been left to us. Jeffersonville Republican. Tho Vevay Reveille cordially endorses the nomination, and place3 tho narri.s of iFillmore and Donelson at its mast-head, but instead of editorial comments of iu own, publishes an article from the Cincinnati Times. "We place them at our mast-head, as the American candidates fur these important positions, with the determination to fight in their behalf as long as a shred straightens in the breeze. An emotion of pleasure, we have no doubt, will thrill through tho American heart, upon the prospects of Millard Fillmore succeeding Franklin Pierce ia the Presidential chair." Terre Ilaute Ex. This is a good nomination and has been received with loud acclaim all over tho Union. The glad tidings, as they sped on the lightnings wing, filled the hearts of all true Americans with great joy. Vin.Jiews. It is with a feeling of most unfeigned joy, that we announce to our readers this week, the almost unanimous nomination by tho American Party, of Millard Fillmore and Andrew J. Donelson, as candidates for the two highest and most respen- ble offices wit!. in tli3 gift of the people of this broad Republic. We regard the selection as a most judicious one the best that could possibly have been made, and as eminently calculate to unite the Acicr- j ican Party, by restoring that harmony and good feeling now so essential to our success as a National Party. Newbury Trib. We have been long enouüh trying to serve and harmonize conflicting interests to main tain conservative ground in regard to Republicanism and Native Americanism, have foun 1 it an uphill business, and from this out we'll none of it. We like part of both c ceds; but the time must come when every voter who is opposed to old lineism, must choose between them. 1 hat tune has already come -with us; and wo choose tho Native American organization. Fillmore is our first choice for the Prc.--idency. We care not a fig for platforms. Fillmore's official career is all the platform we want; and we prefer defeat with him to success with any other man likelv to be nominated. XUochcilh IliidL We are proud that our standard bearers in the great political contest of this year, are Millard Fillmore and Andrew J. Donelson; men of known worth, true and tried. Now is the time for the men of American party to renew their energy in this great work get together and consult upon the best plan for carrying Ahs next election. Organize' organize! Let this be attended to as soon as poseible. Hod-port Rep. Birth Extraordinary. The last number of the Herald published at Camden, Ark., contains the following: "A few days since a negro woman beloninc: to Colonel Jockery, tho worthy President of our railroad, was delivered of four children at one birth three girls and one boy; their average weight is seven pounds each. When last heard from the mother and her little darkies were doing well. Tha Colonel has named the children after his favorite enterprise, Mississippi, Ouachita and Red River Railroad, giving the girls the names of the three rivers and calling the hy railroad. The woman and her husband were both at work on the railroad during he past year. This occurrence is regarded as a favorable omen of our road, and it is thought the stock of the company ought to command a premium, and that upon this nigger basis they will be able to" negotia-te a loan. Hurrah', for the Mississippi, Ouachita and Red River Railroad:" 07"The tout Alvin Adams may he expected here early this xuoroing from St. Louis for Louisville. Lookout for her.
