Under this contract, the work is to be completed by Jan. 1, 1837, TIvj courtroom will be ready for use sorne time lefore the final ' completion. The plan dilfc-rsin sonic respects
from the old plan. The lower stoTy is similar. The court room will have a galery over the entrance doors, a.' level floor, and some change in the side rooms. Mr.' Allen will no doubt do full justice . to the job. He offered the lowest sealed proposal, and we arc glad lie has got the ' contrrct. This redoubtable .gentleman .made his appearance in Florida Township, this county, on Tuesday night of fast week. It seems that a j'oumr man by tho name of Renjamin Wheat, had' rendered himself obnoxious to certain individuals, and they repaired to his bed-room on Tuesday night, took him out, stripped him bare to the hips, and gave him one hundred and twentyr five lashes, leaving his back dreadfully torn - anil mangled. , This is a high-hauded affair, and ought to bo investigated. After geti ting off there, she went on the ways at Paducah and was thoroughly . repaired. She arrived here yesterday from Padacah, and commenced at once leading for Xcw Orkans. She j could get a full load here, but we presume has engagements below. She was loading all yesterday here, and will go no higher up this ;tin;e. The Florida is a mammoth freighter and a good boat in every particular. She is linder the command of Capt. Mulliken, although during his absence, Mr. Steele was acting in his place yesterday. She leaves today, at 12 o'clock for 2ew Orleans. . We were glad to see the Cue new stern wheeler Uöy. rö'wetl, lying at' our wharf yesterday morning, sound, as ever, Notwithstanding her accident. Wc'liad reported her' badly injured, and when the Rowling Green left her uncertain whether or nol sn'e "v-6uld rest on tho bottom of Rarren .River. Ry the energy and industry of her officers and crew, she was saved. All the freight thrown overboard was rescued excepting about twenty-three casks of bacon which sunk. The Gov. Powell is now tight, and promises what we wished her 'ashort time, a long and prosperous career. She Was loading yesterday for the "Wabash, and will start f 6-day for that river, if she did not get off last nigut. Tho Cincinnati Commercial in speaking of thj ill-fated Henry Lewis, says: The Henry Lewis was a first class Xew Orleans steamer, and in her third season. She was built here and owned bv Capt. Emerson, of Xew Richmond, Clark Patterson, of Ripley, and other onicers on board. She was worth about j $25,000, and is, wo understand, partially insured. There is a great difference in the statements as to tho number of lives lost by the sinking of this steamer. Capt. Collier, of the Hungarian, and a passenger of the Lewis informed us there were probably twenty to thirty lost. Tho Marshat of Covington, who was cut out from beneath tho fallicn cabin, told us he was sure there were sixty lost. The Cincinnati Columbian of Monday says, CKp'tain Williamson, of the steamboat feusfqiicharfoa, ' crossed over the ferry-boat to Newport, yesfeVday morning, about ten o'clock, to his residence,1 to all appearance in perfect health; soon after reaching home he .was seized with a spasm, and before assistance could be. procured, he was a corpse. He had a wfo and two or three children. The following were the shipping rate's yesterday to New Orleans: Rulk meat, 33c per 100 lbs; Wheat, 35c per sack; Oats, 23c per sack; Flour, 60c per bbl; Lard, 90c per bbl; Cask Meat, 30c per 100 H.s; Pork, 80c per bbl; Corn, 33c per sack. The Roard of Underwriters in St. Louis have employed one of the ferry-boats to keep steam up and be in readiness from hour to hour during the day and night, so that should a conflagration take place amongst the boats, the burning boat may be at onco hauled into the streaih. anil the balance of the bbat3 'Saved. The Rowling Green, after a very short absence, returning from Green River yesterday morning, with a full freight, and a barge in tow loaded with 500 barrels nour, besides a lot of bulk meats, Xrc. She will start for Green River again to-day. The Kate Sarchet arrived from the Wabash Monday night, with a full load of freight, which she obtained at points low down on that stream. She is preparing to start back to-tlay. She is a fine and substantial steamer and under the eontrol of gentleman. , The Rescue, tinder -command of Capt. xV. II. Burgher, arrived yesterday from Cincinnati with a full trip, bound for Memphis and White River. She will continue running in this trade till further notice. Shcput efct a good deal of freight here. Capt. E. F. Dix, and others of the Polar Star, have purchased the steamer Star of the West, for !2(!,00O. Capt. Dan Able and others purchased the steamer Edinburgh, at St. Louis on the 6th for $-).O0O. The swift packet Rainbow will be here to-day, and return to Louisville in tho afternoon. Those going up will find her a fast and comfortable boat. Thursdays and Saturdays are her regular days. The Tennessee Polle, bound for the Wabash; may be expected here this morning, from Cincinnati. Tho Jacob D. Early is loading at that port for the Wabash, and will probably be here tomcrrow or the day after. The Wm. Garvin was here last evening, with a good trip of passengers a nit freight. She will hereafter make regular trips as forj merly and be hero every Tuesday and Friday afternoons. The following freight rates to New Orleans were being paid at Cinncinnati last Monday: Whiskey and oil $l,o0 per bbl; Hour Süo; pound freights) 50c per II. Tho Ohio Rulle, one of the finest Cin - chmati and Now Orleans packet;, is due this
morning for the South. Miss Heron, the eminent actress, and troupe, are on board. The river was never known scarcely to fall faster bcre than it did night before last. It must have a bad leak in the bottom! The little-Rack Hawk was taking on freight yesterday for the Wabash, and will leave for thariver to-day. The J. P. Tweed rroy be expected from Cincinnati for St. Loiliä this morning.
