An Outrageous Assault. A man named A. Coffin was examined yesterday before Jas. T. V-'alkcr, Esq., on a charge of having, on the evening previous between the Lours of 8 and 9 o'clock, committed an assault oa a young man named Felvez, with a slung shot, with intent to Commit murder. Tha witnesses swore that FclvcZj who is a young
man, of rather delicate appearance, went into j the house of Mrs. Soecrost, to get some victuals? that while there eating the defendant canie in, 'and without any provocation whatever, and before a word had been spoken by either of the parties, struck Felvca on the head with a j blung shot, causing a fracture of the skull into which Dr. Ilallock thrust his finger near an inch. The opinion of the physicians attending was at the time, that the wound w" vwi-al, nd even now though, the boy is going about, -ucy consider his siti" -Ci-Uical. Goffin had been to the house earlier in the evening, at which time he exhibited a slung 6ii0t, and declared his intention to "clean out" &aj person he found th ere on his return. He w3 required to give bail in the sum of i$500 for his appearance at the next term of "ihe Circuit Court, and in default was committed to jail. IIat8, CArs, &c, at Wholesale. We call 'attention to Messrs. C. B. Camp & Co's. advertisement of Hats, Caps, and Straw Goods at "wholesale. This is an old Cincinnati House, Sind has secured the full confidence of those who have been in the habit of dealing with it. Ther are manufacturers and dealer, and ,.. possess evsry facility libr selling at the lowest market rates. Those of our merchants who desire any goods of this description will find it to their advantage to purchase at-this house-O-Last evening the gorge of ice still re'mained in the riveopposite thJS city, except in the channel on tha opposite side. Men were engaged yesterday in cutting a channel from the three steamers lying in the bend above, across the river to the open water. We believe it is the intention to work the boats Jto different quarters. The Twichell will start down the earliest hour she can do so with afety. Qr By advertisements it will be perceived ' that the Board of Commissioners will on the 8th of March next, let to the lowest bidder the job of reViuildinjr the Court House; on the 1st day of March they will let to the lowest and JLest bidder, the medical attendance upon the jpoor of the county ami prisoners. i3"7" The current in the channel of the Kentucky side of the river was running like a mill raco yesterday, but skiffs were constantly crossing it, carrying passengers to the ice, and others from the ice to Kentucky. dCT There will be services in St. Taul's CEpiscopal) church to-morrow as usuaL OT"Lecturcs the He v. Dr. Foster will give lecture this ereninz. : Population of St. Locis. The census just completed shows the population of St. Louis to be about 120,000 souls. A Central American on Walker. Tho "Bulctin Oficial" of San Jose, a city of Costa Ilica, publishes a letter from Grenada, in which the writer denounces Col. Walker and his followers in good set terms. We copy as follows: , As to tho nation, its situation passes from bad to worse. As-soon as AValker landed at San Juan, he did nothing but levy contributions arresting even the American Counsul, . because he refused to pay. He had scarcely arrived in Granada beft re ho called for another -supply of $50,000, seizing upon merchandize, jewels, and whatever he could lay his hand upon in order to satisfy his troops. Tho wife of Don Xicho Chamorro was robbed of her jewels, violated and so maltreated that the ood lady died in consequence. The atrocities wlix'i these dumons have committed are innumerable; they even rcnt so far as to" kill a poor creature of only five or six years of ue You will know of the treaty which these illustrious General3, as they are now called, have signed. This, treaty was signed by Corral as under the constraint of one who cries, "your money or your life." Walker said to him: "Come and sign, or if not, to-morrow I will .shoot upon the plaza more than twenty heads of families that I have in custody;" and.to give an example of his resolution, lie shot the unfortunate Mayorga. He died like a good Christian, praying for vengoanco on his assassins, and crying, "viva our country and Union." . When Corral arrived at Granada, they sung A "Je Deum, disarmed the eight hundred men under' Corral, and appointed the latter Minister of War. This was on the 5th, and on the Cth certain officers of Leon assembled in Walker's house and the result ofthat infernal council was th j death of Corral. Thu3 our principal men are p rishing, and thus the Yankees will proceed until they have finished with every Nicaraguan that can give opposition to Walker. You will already have seen that we cannot be wors 3 off. The people submit, but I believe that this state of things cannot last much longer. I send you the proclamation of tho new l'rcsident. Don 1 atncio is an excellent man, honorable, patriotic, peaceful andeverything one nvght deaire; but at present he is nothing more than a blind automaton oi Walker. They have now appointed as Minister de Ha ten ia C ili ornia Yankee, who has an extended fame for his thievish propensities. ' Finally, I will inform you that it is concluded among them to invade Costa Rica. Here everything has been exhausted war and pestilence has made away with life and property, and tho liberators now w'sh to liberale the bolt that shuts them from further plunder. The Senate in executive session to-day, confirmed Wilson Shannon as Governor of Kansas, after a warm debate, by a stricly party votes 12 voting in the negative. During the session an ineffectual attempt was made to conduct the discussion with open doors. Col. Fremont's warrant for the Maiposa tract of land in California was signed to-day by the Land Commissioner. The following is a list of the recently elect ed officers of tho llepublicans' Association of Washington: President, Dr. E. M. Joslin; 1st Vice President, Jacob Bigelow; 2d Vice President, Martin Buell; llecording Secretary, Lewis Clepham; Corresponding S.c etur, Dan'l 11. Goodloe; Treasurer, II. S. Brown; Direetorsr.Wm. Blanchard, D. J. Bishop, 0. M. Tudor, M. D . The Association derives its importance from the fact that it is. becoming the centre of the Republican party's operations with a view to operate on tho ensuing Presidential campaign. The State Department sent into the Senate to-day a document bearing on tho Central American question as far back as 1S50. Among them is a plan proposed by Mr. Marcolietta to Lord Clarendon two years ago; that Nicaragua, Great Britain, and the United States, unite in a treaty for the settlement of tho Musquito Indian question. Mr. Marcy, in a letter to Mr. Marcolietta, de nies that Great Britain has any sovereign rights j over any part ot (central America, ana to un;tj with her in the treaty proposed would be a district acknowledgement that she h s and t' at any such arrangement would interfere with the claims set up by Costa llica. A suspected poisoning in Manchester by a son of a father for tho purpose of getting a life insurance of 200, a case of t wo children in the same city, drugged to psath by the parent for the sake of a 5 fee from a burial club, have shocked all England For yeurs says the Times, the calendars of English Assize havo presented in almost every shire, especially in the mining districts, cases without number of poison administered by wives to their husbands, and of fathers to children, for tho purpose of obtaining some small pittance from the burial clubs so common in England, and whose cases were but a minia-1 ture of this Tdlmer picture.
