LIFE IN A POWBEB MILL. Dickens thus describes a visit to the powder nrill of Hounslow, near London: ' In this silent region, amid whose ninetYssven work places no human voice ever breaks upon the ear, and wheTO indeed no human form is seen, except in the isolated house in which his allotted task is performed, there are upward of two hundred and fifty work people. They are a peculiar race, not of couise by nature, in most cases, but by the habit of j-ears. The circumstances of momentary destruction in which they live, added to the most stringent and necessary regulations, have sabdued thöir minds and feelings to the condition of their hire. There is seldom any need to en force these regulations. Some terrific explosion here, or in works of a similar kind elsewhere, lays a fixed mark in their memories, and acts as a constant warning. Here no shadows of a practical joke or caper of animal spirits ever transpires no wit ticism, no chatiing, or slang. A laugh is never heard; a smile seldom seen. Even the work is carried on by the men with as few words as possible, and these uttered in a low tone. Not that anybody fancies that mere sound will awaken the spirit of combustion or cause an explosion to take place, but their feelimrs are always kept subdued. If one man wishes to communicate anything to another, or ask for anything from somebody at a short distance, he must go there; ho is never permitted to shout or call out. There is a particular reason for this last regulation. Amid all this silence whenevera shout does occur, everybody knows that some imminent danger is expected the next moment and all rush away headlong from the direction of the shout. As to -winning toward it to offer any assistance, 'as ominon in all other cases, it is thoroughly understood that none can be afforded. An cccident here i immediate and beyond remedy. If the shouting bo continued for some time (for a mar) might be drowuing in a river) that might cause one or two of the bold est to return; but this would be a very rare occurrence, it is by no means to be inferred that the men are selfish and insensible to the perils of each other; on the contrary they have the greatest consideration lor- each other, as well as for their employers, and think of the danger to the lives of others, and of property at stake at all times, and more especially in the more dangerous houses. The proprietors of the various gun-powder mills all display the same consideration for each other, and when ever any improvement tending to lessen danger is miiue i..aitciy communica ted to all others. Ihe wages of the men are good, and the hours very short; no artificial lights are ever used in the work. They leave the mills at 3 o'clock in the winter and sum mer. From tha Madison Courier. A Log Cabin Wedding;. In one of the counties of Ohio, bordoring upon this good State of Indiana, Mr, S., a rresbytenan minister, was returning home in the dark of a rainy day, and saw a man com ing through the grass, barefoot, with his pants rolled above his knees, to keep them dry. As he approached he said: "Mr. b., will you come over to our house and do a job for me? and I will do as much for you sometime." Mr. S. saw by his bashful manner what the job was, and replied. "Let me speak to my family, and change my coat, and I will be there in a moment." True to his promise, he entered tho cabin, when it had become so dark that he could scarcely see the father, who was sitting by a bed. Shortly after his wife came in at another door, and a young man and woman came down a ladder from the loft. Then all sat waiting, the minister expecting a light and other company; when the young man enquired. "Are you ready, sir?'' "Yes," replied Mr. S., arid took the license and held it down and read it by the dim light of a few coals there were upon the hearth. W hile he was marrying them the old gentleman undressed and went to bed. 1 he minister closed the ceremony by praying while they were yet standing, byt, to his astonishment, when he opened his eyes, all had disappeared, lie then waited and waited, expecting some other scene to open, but seeing nothing and hearing nothing, except the hard breathing of the healthy old gentleman, who was by this time sound asleep, he, supposing the "play had ended," found his hat and went home. When he met the loving couple afterwards he saw by their appearance that they were not conscious of having violated any of the usages of good society, but that in their minds the light, the prager, the supper and the fee were not on the programme. But, as is often true, they became deeply interested in the minister who njarried them, though adults, learned to read, so that, by the time their chilren are grown, they may learn that there are more fashionable and expensive styles of fastening the hymenial knot. Daniel Webster and Join Randolph . At the late Webster Anniversary dinner in Boston, the following story was told by Prof, Sanborn, of Dartmouth College: "During the first years of Webster's service in Congress, Mr. Calhoun was speaking upon a proposition to require all the government dues to be paid in silver and gold, lie was op posed to the measure; argued its inconvenience to the agents of the government with great ability, and incidentally asserted that in no instance had our government ever resorted to su oh a measure. Mr. Webster, sitting by Randolph's side, said to him; 'He is mistaken on that point for there is a post office law in tha year 'J7-requinng dep uties to receive only suyer ana goia in payment of postage.' 'Is there such a law?' said Eandclph with great eagarness; 'show it to me.' Mr. Webster stepped to the Clerk's desk, and selecting a volume of United States laws -.t-is.V- (-nininai. f Via n -4- aa s. 1 1 , .1 Wim.i y-,. v..i aiiuucu i and opening to the very page where it was found, gave the book ..'Randolph, He studied
it attentively noted the pajre, chapter, and sec
tion. The moment Mr. Calhoun took his seat,. Randolph rose, and in. his shrill and harsh, tone shouted, "Mr. Speaker," and gaining his. attention, he proceeded to tay: 2?il Admirari is one of the beautiful and sententious, maxims of Horace, which I learned in," my boyhood and to this day I have .been wont ta beiieve in its truth and to follow it in practice.. But 1 give It up. It is no longer a rule of my life. . - - " 1 do wonder, ami am utterly astonished, that a man who assumes to legislate for the coun try should be so utterly ignorant of its existing laws. The gentleman mentions that, the; bill before the House introduces a , new provision into our legislation. He does not knoTO that it has ever been incorporated into any statute by any Congress in our country's his tory, irhen it has been a common usage almost from the infancy of our nation. "Macgruder,"" screamed the excited orator to one of theclerks. Macgruder, take volume 5 of the? United States laws, page 150, chapter 16, se$ tion 10, and read.' - The Clerk read : 'Be it enacted &c, that all tho dues of the postal department shall be paid in silver and gold, &c.' - ' 'Witness,' said Itandolph, 'the gentleman's innocent simplicity, his utter want of acquaintance with the laws of tho land for which he1 affects to be a leading legislator. Now, Mr. Speaker, I was educated to know the laws of my country. Ihe law just recited has rserj iamiliar to me Irom childhood; indeed, 1 can not remember the time when I did not know it; yet, simple and elementary as it is, the gentleman, in his superficial study of our laws, has overlooked it.' . ;'.
