cupies consulerahle space in public attention. 4 3 obtain the armed co-operation of the GrThe circumstances arc briefly these: Dr. Wil- m inie diet against Russia, liam Palmer, a surgeon, btit who m de bet- j Austria, howeverdeclares that if there be a t ng Ins prolesston in other words, "a sport-'. .. . . . ,. , .. , . , n ing maiV-was in company with a gentleman rjPturc ,n nor diplomatic relations with Russ.a. mined Cooke, at Hug.dey, Stailbrdshue, Sut-'-13 will not be able to take the field the ircstlitig up some gamll nguccou'nts, when Cooke, eat year.
who had just drank a glass of liq jor, suddoiily became sick and exclaimed that Palmer had poisoned him. Cooke died next day, and Palmer was arrested. A discovery tint Palmer was indebted a large sum to Cooke cbunVmed the sujjicion against him, ami it was then renumbered that his (Palmer's) wife had diid ' suddenly of symptoms similar to those that had carried oil' Cooke. This k-d to further cu lu.rv when the astounding fact came gradually out : that sixteen persons, all immediately counseled with Palmer, had died suddenly, within a short time, and that on the lives of some of these persons he had effected insurance, while with others he had betting transactions. The ' mostastoundingincidint of those developments is that Lord George lientinck (who it wiil be remembered, died suddenly) had transactions with Palmer, and it is now believed' that lie was poisoned! The corpses of some ol t!u supposed victims have been exhumed, and "submitted to chemical research for traces ol' paison. Stry chine, or some other vegetable , preparation is supposed to lun e been the means employed. It is somewhat curious that the accused had a fast horse that figured conspicu- . ously in his turf speculations and bore thj name of "Strychine." Nexb Season's TiIveb Trade. "We have heard a great deal of speculation in reference to the coming season's trade in all the upper streams, and there seems to be but one opinion amongst those well posted in river matters, and that opinion is, thatsteamboating wiil pay better during the year 1S36, than for many . years past. The prospects for plenty of water in all the Western rivers, could not be better than they now are. From all points above here from W.iich we have heard, snow in unlimited quantities has fallen, which, when it becomes melt1 ed by the sun will produce water iu abundance. From points on the Mississippi, Illinois, Missouri rivers and their tributaries, news reaches ''us of one continued snow storm, which has prevailed for severul days past, and when the melting process commences, wo may lookout Ior nign water and a break up in the ice from one end of our various rivers to the 'other. The long winter that we are now having, will ;have a tendency to make business in the bout ing line good when it does open, and the only drawback our boatmen now have reason to anft.cipate, is the prospect of having too much water.
