ADD. H. SANDEES, EDITOE. GITY OF EVANSVILLE. WEDNESDAY MORNIXG,::.::::::JAX. 23. OrThe Editor was absent yesterday in attendance at the Princeton Convention, consequently he is not responsible .for any delinquencies in to-day's paper. Mr. Bofjuet The Court House, and -: Commissioners. Whenever a matter of general tie County interest is individual sprung on the public, nearly every member of the public, at once shows his high appreciation of his dear privileges by expressing opinions and circulating reports in relation to the matter, wnetner lie reaiiy Knows anything about it or not. In this way the public mind is frequently forestalled, and per-' injustice. However in their convictions, sons involved, receive honest persons may be however zealous in the their convictions, protection of public
interest; there is a certain degree of discrira- w,th the one result in both, cheating the devil ination necessary sometimes to be used, al-1 0fhis just claes. though it may seen to dictate compromise, or j We p;ty tne poor self-deluded or self-hum-concession. , bugged man, who is wasting precious time Some will allow their political, sectional, an4 probably raie genius in trying to invent
national and even their religious views and prejudices to influence them in their considerations, in matters pertaining not in the least degree to either; this is all wrong wrong very wrong. But to the subject. A few weeks since, our Court House and county offices were destroyed by fire; and before the flames were extinguished every tongue was lent to the enquiry,
where shall the loss fall? We do not propose puoiic interest, and certainly should be no here to enter into an investigation of Mr. 1 matter of public censure. But when it asRoquct's personal liability, according to the 'suines the form of a regular organization, and strict letter of the law; and as to his securi-1 tne fuw have the strength of unity and method ties we presume no one will question that ' tn fnrwnrd hi-ir rlasina nr to widen and
their liability, long since ceased to xist. At the time the Court House was destroyed; just at a period when Mr. R's. brightest hopes to be realized or blasted, we find the were hand of affliction laid sorely upon him, prostrated by a malignant disease and entirely unable, even to give directions concerning his business. If Mr. R. was still under the term of the contract; if the long and entire occupancy of the buildings by the county, and if the acts of the Uoard oi Commissioners outside ot , . . i 1 j 1 11 M-i I tne contract nau not aeierminea nis liaoimy, the disaster could not have occurred at a more unfortunate juncture. But we do not wish merely to present a case for public sympathy. Neither R. nor any of his friends asked for this. The question is, would it be just to visit the contractor with a heavy penalty which would entail certain ruin on his family, already weighed down by an accumulation of misfortunes for what had occurred without his fault or dereliction. Every man who has a soul will at once answer, No! Let the Court House be repaired or re-constructed by the countv; the expense will not be felt. One strong argument in favor of the immediate reparation of the buildings by the county, is the present situation of the records. The county offices are scattered about in very in convenient places, and the clerk's office, particularly is so situated that in the event of a fire, every thing must inevitably be lost. Suppose now that the Board of Commissioners in spite of the great interests which are now in jeopardy, and will be every day until proper provision is made should notify Mr. Roquet to proceed to re-build the Court House and upon his decling to comply, should undertake to enforce measures by a legal inquisition; we ask, how long and we put the question to reasonable thinking men how long will it be before you can have any assurance of the safe ty of those evidences of your title to real or personal estate, and those judicial orders, up. on which you rely to enforce and protect your rights and how long will you be compelled to wait, before th slow creeping law has explored the almost interminable labyrinth, that pre sents itself in a contemplation of this course? The soonest way is the cheapest. That portion of the community on whom would rest the burthen of the expense, have already sig nified, not only their willingness but their de sire that the work of re-building should be at once commenced by the county. And many would rather see the work advance, like many other works of public enterprise, by individual contribution, than that this blow shall fall, with its fatal effect on the heud of Mr.. Roquet Incog at the Spirits. Vv e rnve place to-day to another communi cation from "Incog." We must ask for a lit tie more brevity on the part of the writer, as our columns are short. "Incog" is pretty se vere to-day. While we shall not undertake to endorse all the writer's language, we must be permitted to say that the subject needs severity, and we are glad to see a writer capa ble of doing some little justice to the humbug, showing it up and laying the switch on deserving shoulders. It is pitiable to see full grown men and women, apparently in the full possession of healthy faculties otherwise liter ally and unmistakeably insane on Spiritual ism. But "Incog" has said enough on the subject, and heeds no help from others. Dr. Charles Kidd, of England, an nounces that chloroform is a perfect cure for hydrophobia. A teaspo.onful of either chloro form or either is to be sprinkled on a handker chief and placed on the patient's face to smell, and a red-hot poker is then, within half an hour, to be applied to the bite. If these two things be done, hydrophobia need not be ar-
prehendod..
PACTS AND FANCIES ABOUT TOWMs Tie Spiritual Humbug. 1 Mb. Editor: It seems to me, that when humbuggery in every possible form, by its profusion and its apparent connection with, almost every actor and action in the life around us has become disgusting to the human heart, men set deliberately to work humbuging themselves. Some pursue one wild phan-
tasy and some another. One follows the beckonings of a phantom in science; another in politics and a third in religion. One confineshis self-delusion to things material and 'of earth, earthy another boldly steps beyond the portals of earth and humanity, and humbugs his very soul. Y e look with astonish- ' ment and pity, at a neighbor pursuing some j scientific impossibility by which he calculates I upon upsetting ancient notions and startling 1 eTen modem progress, but we regard with j mmgie(j feelings of contempt and indignation, that other neighbor, who but a month since a an of thß world and a d espjserof religion ,has smUy built up or taen to himself as his own some equal impossibility in religion, by j VujpVi n ni.r L-inrl rf Hpn vpn istnhs created I wnich a now kin(1 of Heaven is to be created or tue 0i(j one reached by some patent means, that mechanical impossibility, the perpetual motion but we must loathe that soul humbugger, who under the name of Wakemanite, believes an old insane hag has been raised from the dead, to represent Omnipotence itself. So long as this self-humbuggery is innocent, or but confined to individuals, and seeks not to strengthen itself and' its influence by deluding others into its fatal meshes, it is no matter of deepen the evil influence of their delusions, and one apparent design of the organization is to propogate their dangerous beliefs and to secure more adherents, then, not only is it a matter of public interest, but pre-eminently calling for public investigation, and if necessary for severe public condemnation. It has been probably two years since 'Spiritualism" first made its appearance in this city, and it was discovered that EvansiU(J haJ iu mediums as well as Roch J ester. A "circle" was formed, and it had al ready occasioned some excitement, and was promising a wide and dangerous influence, when a well aimed editoral from your pen, Mr. Editor, exposed its deformity and exhibited its perils, and for a time the serpent appeared killed. I then thought, and I now think, you made some persons asliayiied of themselves, and although the belief within them might not have been disturbed, they feared public ridicule and public opinion too much to openly seek the further strengthening of Spiritualism here at that time. But lately, Spiritualism has made a new start in this city, and now "circles" are hold at stated intervals, and a private house can no longer accommodate the "mediums" and their deluded followers. The evil is spreading, and men and women who have heretofore been regarded as at least sensible people, though not as -educated persons, have given themselves up to a belief, which if true, would stamp all interpretations of the Bible held by the" prominent religious sects of the day, as monstrous lies. But, my dear sir, it is needless to charga that a man wao believes in Spiritualism is necessariiy an infidelOne of their leading members in this city has already bored an audience three hours at one sitting to prove tnat bpintuaiism is sus .... tained by the Bible, and to deny that it is, may be to invito a similar infliction on another audience, fc r the same one he can never get together again, even though a golden dollar ac companied each invitation. It has only been comparatively recently, that these monstrous doctrines have been referred to the Holy Book for solution. It was only after the religious world had become shocked by the very mon strosity of the tenets of Spiritualism, that Spiritualists boldly declared that the Bible itself sustained them. Now, men too ignorant to correctly write any mortal language of man, are expounding the immortal words of the öcnptures, to prove tnat lioly üook gives authority for the most ridiculous tom-foolery and absurd nonsense that ever drew forth the contempt and pity of civilized men Is it not singular, that there is a spirit land of different spheres, with the spirits of which this world can have direct communication, and on the most trivial subjects; and yet the discovery of this spirit land and its immortal secrets have been left to this age, and to just such persons as are called "Spiritualists" in Evansville? Is it not singular, that the spirits of the invisible world should have for ages remained in profound silence, and then, when they did at last make up their immortal minds to announce themselves and their condition, manifested their presence through rappings, and to two shrewd, but ignorant girls, of so earthly disposition, that they at once set about retailing their communications with immortal spirits for money f Is it not singular that spirits, even the spirits of Philosophers, Sages and , Patriots, should almost invariably select igncance as a channel of communication with this mortal world? And is it not singular, that in the spirit land they retain all the passions and feelings and instincts of humanity, aud have apparently lost any interest in eternity which they might have felt on earth, and now appear to 1 alone suffering in anxiety for things they left behind them here? Bvit, Mr. Editor, there is something sorrow
ful in the thought, that whil e we are preserving in holy memory dear departed friends and relations, and speak not of them but with tears, and our hearts are aching with the void of their absence, these now sacred ones are making sport for "circles" of fanatics that these holy ones, in their immortality, are appearing "in spirit" through- the person of a "medium," and gibbering nonsense, for which, if they spake it in literal body, there would be no excuse except down-right insanity. And yet how often do we hear from the "circle" in Ev-
nnsvillA hat trio cnlrlf nf eiwh a denartod ! , - . r 1 friend has spoken to this "circle," and lament- j ed the unbelief of friends, and rebuked them : for not swallowing this greatest humbug of the 19th century, the century of humbugs? a nd not onl v tha nrpnimis memories of these. our iate friends, are thus ruthlessly violated, but the spirits of the great departed, whom nations have mourned, are made to contribute to the follies of a circle of fanatics. There is something in this, and in the thought that any dear one now living may a few days honco be the spirittool of these weak-minded ..... i .- persons, to abuse those who are weeping their departure, which create a different feeling from mere sorrow a feeling of indignation at the rude familiarity taken with the names and memories of the loved and lost. While mere Spiritualism in itself may be comparatively harmless, except to those whose minds are crazed on the subject, it is the father of other, humbuss. Under it a new race of quacks have started, who are called "Healing Mediums." These profess to cure all man ner of diseases, and by spiritual agency. There is no doubt but that faith and a kind of animal magnetism have worked cures in some cases, under the hands of these spiritual quacks. But faith alone has worked greater wonders and so has animal magnetism alone. We have two of these "Healing Mediums" among us and both females. One, being united to a "Water Cure" establishment, has a harp of two strings, pure water itself, and the "sperits of just men made perfeck" to help. The other has announced herself in a pamphlet as a professional "Healing Medium," and being thus before the public cannot complain of the further adver tisement of Incog's notice. She assumes the position of a second Christ come to heal the sick. She claims to have received her author it from the great Holy One himself. In other words. God has sent her here as ho did His Son in part, to heal the sick and perform mir acles! Was there ever more arrant blasphemy? Is the widow Wakeman herself, claim ing to be a messenger sent to this world from God, and that when she dies the world will at once die and come to judgment any more a lunatic than this female, who claims to be a messenger of God sent here to heal the sick? Not a bit more if our messenger is sincere but this I doubt. She is a shrewd, smart woman, and I cannot think believes one half the humbuggery she practices. But tha reader may not think it possible she claims her authority from the Great and Holy One. All I can say is, if she do not, her friends have misstated hsr claims while the very quotations from Scripture on her pamphlet, claim about the same thing. Now, how does this messenger of Him proceed to heal the sick? Not much like His Son, it is true. In one case I have heard of, and I presume in others, she assumed the spirit of an old Dutch Physician, who palavered around the patient at a great rate, the messenger feeling her own body to find the seat of the disease. But the Dutch gentleman being unable to effect a cure, the spirit of an Indian "Medicine" took possession of her body and kicked up & terrible rumpus, chattering vehemently, occasionally dancing, and nearly setting the neuralgic patient distracted by his rough pats on the head through the messengerThis did not cure either, and probably the poor sufferer would have had doctors of every nation take his case into consideration, if he had not left. I leave readers to make their own comparisons between this manner of healing the sick, and Christ's, merely remarking that this latter-day messenger requires a fee from those able to pay. How long this "Healing Medium" humbug will last in our community, depends upon the amount of superstitious ignorance in our midst more than anything else. My remarks have already extended far longer than I had intended, yet I have only touched on this most iniquitous humbug of Spiritualism. One evil which has grown out of it in Xew York, is the Free Love association. I hear rumors of a Free Love society about being started here. Let it be done, and there will be a rattling among the dry bones of those engaged in it, which will shake them out of this community, or my name is not Incog. But when a man or woman so far bids farewell to sanity as to believe in Spiritualism, there is no other speeies of fanaticism for which they are not ripe. In conclusion, I will merely remark, that I have the nanus of all the spiritualists in Evansville, and shall take an early occasion to publish them, with your permission, in case this communication leads to a controvesy. INCOG. 0T"The Vincennes Gazette calls Evansville a "big Pig-tail city." Hush now that's unfair.
