feat have an exceedingly bitter pill to swal
low. The clique organ here said as much as it dare say in favor of Robinson, and probably that helped injure his prospects. Certain friends are always a great deal worse than enemies, to office-seekers, and we fear Robinson is now in a very proper condition to appreciate the remark. John C. Walker, Esq., lately editor of the Sentinel, received the nomination for Lt. Governor. This was ex
pected. Walker deserved the honor. For
several months he sacrificed conscience and a considerable degree of decency in editing the
State Sentinel and any ' gentleman who does that, deserves a great deal from the Old Line
party, more possibly than he may receive by a
mere nomination for office.
But the Secretary of State. Ha! ha! ha! ! Our dear cotcmporary of the Enquirer has our sincere sympathies. We had feared, and so
definitely expressed ourself, that his Demo
cratic friends would scarcely be able to apre-
ciatehis surpassing merits, and especially his
party claini3 sufficiently, to give him the nora
ination for Secretary of State. We rather advocated his claims, and perhaps that did the
business. Who knows? Tho Old Line clique of Evansville, however, should never have
endorsed Mr. Hall, if they really wished him nominated. Such an endorsement, with the endorsement of the Pierce administration at the same time, would kill any man, much less an editor. We sincerely sympathize with our cotemporary in his political misfortune. It is true one editor has received the nomination for a high office, but he don't live n the Pocket
and besides he is not exactly just such an editor as our neighbor. We don't think the Pocket has been treated handsomely in this
little matter. We think the Old Line Con
vention has rather throwna slur on our region,
if not directly insulted it. We had only one canditate for nomination to any office, (except Hicks, up at Rockport, who has likewise been shabbily treated) and our candidate's claims might have been allowed in mere compliment to .. his district, even if there were no disposition to compliment him. We trust our neighbor will not take this matter to heart. We know he has long had his mind and soul, or so much of the abbreviated allowance of such as nature gave him, set on this nominatiou. We know he has been
laboring zealously and distractedly to obtain
the prize, and has made as big a blackguard of
himself as is necessary to recommend a man
to the honors of any Old Line Convention. We know he has thought of it by day and dreamed of it by night, although nobody else dreamed he
: could get the nomination. We know all these
.things and many more, and can therefore ap
preciate the disappointment of this much
loved neighbor. But wo entreat him not to
. do anything bad in his bad feelings and es
pecially not to tear his shirt, as Irish linen is
now hign. "letter luck next time ' "never
say die" "while there's life there's hope
''don't give up tho ship." We could offer him many more trite sayings by way of consolation, but trust the above will answer for the present We would advise him, however, to ease
his feelings by abusing us. That always seems
to do him good in cases of political emergency,
and as it does us no harm, we hope he will have no delicacy in following our advice. That we may see whetherhe does this in a - manner calculated to ensure his safety we would thank him to send us his paper more
regularly than it has come lately.
Somethixgto "Notice." The editor of the Troy Times, a day or two before Christmas,
. Tery delicatePy hinted to his patrons that any
- thing they desired to Lave noticed could . be

itor or any of his little folks. It so happened
that on the same day a patron found upon his ' threshold a fine, bouncing child, wrapped in
; flannels and snuggly stowed away in a basket.
Recollecting the gentle hint in the Times, the patron proceeded to the editor's sanctum and
left the basket and contents upon the table!

Proscribing Americans. Another bit of proof that the Administration
p.'oscribes American citizens in favor of foreign
ers, may be found in the following letter from the Hon. R. C. Puryear, of North Carolina, addressed to the "American Organ," Washington. Such proof as this cannot be denied, and it demonstrates the shameless course pursued
by General Pierce and his coadjutors:
. House of Represent tives, Dec. 21, 1855. $ Dear Sir: I see in your paper of the 22d
inst., a statement concerning the appointment of a postmaster in my district at Madison,
Rockingham county, .N. O., wiucn i uesire 10 correct. The conversation to which you allude was between Mr. Horatio King, First Assistant Postmaster Generaland myself, and not with Mr. Campbell, the Postmaster General, as stated in your article. With this ex
ception the statement is correct, as far as it
goes, but it does not embrace all that occurred betwen Mr. King and myself on that occasion. When I made the application for the ap
pointment, Mr. King asked me if the applicant were a Know Nothing? . I replied that I
did not know whether he was or not; and 1
aiked him if it were possible that his being a
Know Nothing would be an objection r lie
plied, "Yes; I am acting under orders not to
appoint any Know Nothing, and to turn out
all whom I know to belong to the Uruer."
I then asked him if a native-born citizen and a
foreign Roman Catholic, both equally compe
tent, were to apply for the appointment, on
which would he bestow it t He said he sliouid
be compelled to appoint the foreign Catholic
T then left the Department, and do not know
whether any. appointment has yet been made
or not. . . -
