A few of these ideas are en strengthened with words of the feindest entirely too singular to have entered the heads couragement, and not laughed at Jibed, jeered, of their victims from personal investigation and ridiculed.' Weak and irresolute is man. , . ..... .v- , Let republican temperance eiitors remember
anasiuay, ous uear w uuB. murks of the deception of vile and unpnncipled enemies of the American party, who have wickedly deceived those who will not do their own thinking. We have been forcibly reminded of this matter, by receiving a call from an old suDScrmer 01 me journal, wno saiu no ; a' .11 L. JM ..i. wisuea nis paper sioppcu, oecauoe no uiu now like the principles we are upholding. He was born in England, had lived in this country over thirty years, is a citizen of the United States, and would uphold no party which if triumphant would deprive him of the rights he and his children now enjoy! lie was opposed to the Indiana six months law, and thought the terra of probation (five - years) necessary for citizenship of the United States, should be extended. In reality, he was an 1 is as much an American as we are. But he is opposing the American party, because he thinks that if successful, it is going to unmake American citizensto so alter. Constitution and laws, as to iika Lcom present Americans citizens tho rights and privileges they now enjoy as such! If this absurd opinion only belonged to one man, it might pass unnoticed but we know it has been a trick, a base and corrupt piece of deception on the part of petty Old Line politicians, to make the foreign born believe, that the American party design taking from American citizens of foreign birth the rights and privileges they enjoy as such. And wo know these corrupt politicians have deceived hundreds with this most rascally absurd idea and how they must laugh in their sleeves at the gullibility of their victims! - Now we wish plainly to say to every man who entertains the idea that any party in the country, or that ever may be in the country, will seek to so alter the Constitution and outrage the principle and spirit of law, as to em power them to pass an ex-post facto law, even if it could be done, betrays an ignorance that is anything but complimentary to the work ing3 of our institutions upon himself. The whole idea is too absurd for serious argument Permit us to assure these gentlemen, that so far as the American party is concerned, it has no intention of ever interfering with any right or privilege now possessed by American citi zens, no matter where born. But it does seek to make those rights and privileges more valu able to their present holders, by making them more difficult of attainment by those who may .hereafter come to thi3 country. Does any American citizen object to this? Let us tell you, that those miserable political hacks who are endeavoring to make you believe the American party desire or intend in any manner to interfere with those who are now American citizons, are giving utterance to that which they know is a miserable falsity. The State platforms and tho National platform of the t American party, have been publislted to the world. They were intended to define all the . principles and objects of that party. Point to any such' political absurdity in a single one of "these platforms, as that breathing any disposition Of the shadow of an intention, of depriv- ' ing American citizens of a single right or priv ilege they now possess. To the platforms of parties you look for their principles and to . the platform of the American party we refer you for its principles, instead of to political hucksters who seek by the foulest slanders to bring down American principles to a level with their own. Going by Steam in Iowa! We received yesterday, and filed in our City Reading Room, the first paper printed on the first steam press in the State of Iowa. This is not merely a copy of one of the papers of ' the first edition, but the identical first paper '. struck off by steam in Iowa. It is the Daily Davenport Gazette, ef Dec. 20th, published by Sanders & Davis, and edited by Alfred Sanders, the oldest editor in Iowa, although yet a young man. We think it has been le.-ss than fourteen years since this paper was started, and there were then in Iowa but three papers. Iowa was then not much else than prairie and and wilderness. But a few years previous, there was not a white inhabitant in its borders. Now, how different! We congratulate our big brother on his prosperity. We hope some day to return his compliment by sending him the last paper worked on a steam press in In- - diana, at the time of its impression! Who has it? At the fire last Monday morning, while furniture was being removed from Mr. Fergus' house, a small rose wood des?.: inlaid with pearl, was carried off. The person who has it would do well to return it immediately, as it has peculiar value to its owner. Persons having anything in their possession belonging to Mr. Fergus, would oblige t.im very much by leaving article. at Mr. Jas. Spalding's residence, corner of Fourth and Main streets. CrLetthe Rev. Mr. Jacobs' friends and the public remember, that hi s house will be opened on New Years Day for the purpose of receiving any tokens of kindness from the people in the form of donations.

Will the Madison Banner please do us justice in this little matter? We did not think it would ever become necessary for us to ask justice at the hands of Mr. Baymiller. Important to Travelers. As the regular Louisville packets are now unable to reach St. Louis by river on account of ice, travelers bound fof that city will see the necessity of taking the cars at Evansville, and going to St. Louis by railroad. The time from this city to St. Louis is only 11 hours, and fare $7 15. The roads are in good order, and time promptly made. The quickest time to St " Louis by river, during the best condition of the rivers, is nearly two days. The last packet around, the Northerner, has, been com pelled to return without being able to get high er up the Mississippi than Capo Girardeau. We hope travelers will recollect at Evans ville they may find ample railroad accommo dations, and the means of reaching St. Louis in a few hours or those coming up the river can take the railroad here, and reach Cincin nati in 11 hours, Pittsburg in 23 hours, and New York in 41 hours. County Office, ate. We commftud an error yesterday in giving tho new location of the county offices. The Clerk's Office will be removed to Caldwell's store, in the Crescent Bank buildings, and Mr. Caldwell will take Sweet & Leonard's old stand, around the corner. The Auditor's Office will be in one of the new buildings in ihe rear of the Washington House. The Treasurer's Office is in the old Auditor's Office in the little building below the old Court Ilouse. The Recorder's Office will be in the present City Clerk's Office, which is to be re moved to-day over Mr. Elliott's Saddlery Shop. Tii2 burning of the Court House has thus pro duced a general scatternicnt of the County offi ces, a great evil in itself, but we trust they will be in their old places some time iu 1856 IIkavt IIogs. Last week, Messrs. Sterne Barton & Co., at Princeton, received of Mr. Nicholas Yager, of Montgomery township, Gibson County, twenty-four hogs averaging 325 pounds eah! Have any of our packers received a better average lot this season, of tb same number? Gibson county glories in her big hogs as well as big corn. The hogs must have been fattened on the mammoth corn, spec imens of which were sent us from Gibson count last fall. OrThe Enquirer is mistaken in putting down the loss by the burning of the Court House at $40,000. It and the jail cost together about $45,000, with the Sheriff's Ilouse included. All the principal heavy work of the Court House is yet standing. $15,000 at the utmost, should rebuild it The Jail and Sheriff's House were uninjured. West Fbasklin, Isn., Dec. 26, 1835. Mn, Adb. II. Sandebs , Dear Sir: I have seen several Bills lately, purporting to be issued by the "Fort Wayne and Southern Railroad Co.," of which the following is a copy: "State of Indiana." "Incorporated by the States of Indiana and "Kentucky. The Fort Wayne and Southern 'liailroad Company will pay 1) ive Dollars to "bearer on demand. Mtscie, Oct. 2, 1854. D. L. Harris, Sec'y. W. N. I have examined the Bank Note List, and Counterfeit Detectors, in vain for informatiou touching this establishment Will you be so good as to give some information in your paper, and let the public know whether this be a rotten shin-plaster or solvent Bank concern, as many of your subscribers are interested in knowing its true character. Yours, most truly. The bills above mentioned may be set down as regular shiB-plaFters, from all we know of them here, and should be left alone. They are not regarded as "currency" in this city, and do not pass as money, We advise our friends at West Franklin to give them the "go by." Ed. Jocbsau fj-rThe following expression of love for the dear foreigners by the Pierce party will not appear in many of the democratic (!') papers: "An order has been issued that none but Amer icans be shipped on the new steam frigate Merrimace, now receving her crew at Boston. latter from Judge Kiblack.
We find the following communication from judg0 NIblack, in the" Vincennes Gazette of TuesJay in pw to- & few interrogatories i - w - statement of a communication from citizens cf Mt. Pleasant Ind., similar to a letter already published in the journal. Contrary to the express intimation of several Old Line editors v v Judge N. has not thought this subject too trifling to merit his attention. It will be perce;ve( tQat the Judge denies the main charge , . ' mnn:t:-n-f h.vin, contained in the communication of having declared the law unconstitutional, and advised the violation of the law, oßering to protect such violators. The Judge's reply is couateous and gentlemanly. lie thinks his language has been misunderstood, not wilfully misrepresented. In the tone of his reply, there is a marked contrast to the vulgar and virulent comments of certain editors on the same charges. We take pleasure in publishing J udge Niblack's communication. Our columns are open to Mt. Pleasant also: In the Daily Gazette, of the 10th inst, I find amongst other things, the following: Queries. Did Judge iUack,"on the 24th day of November last, drink and pay for liquor at Dram's Grocery, on the Ohio and Missis sippi Railroad, two miles .North of Mt Pleasant? Did he tell Drum that the Prohibitory Law was unconstitutional to set out his liquor and ha (the Judge) would -"stand between him and all danger Takirg it for granted that the object in call ing attention to the matter was, to afford me an opportunity of placing myself right in the premises I will, with your permission, make a brief explanation. On my return from the circuit, near the close of November, I was especially interrogated by some citizens of Martin county, at a place near M t. rieasant, called Low-uootee, in the presence of a liquor vendor, in relation to tho constitutionality of the present Prohibitory Liquor Law. In re ply, 1 expressly declined, as 1 have always so tar done, giving any opinion of my own on the subject, but stated what I understood to be the condition of the qu.-stion, and nothing more. I did not, if my memory is not greatly at fault, exchange a single word with the vender himself on thj subject. ' I understand, on inquiry, that after I left some of the friends of the tranic, with a view ot seeking an endorse ment, and of giving confilence in tho propriety and legality of the thing, gave out tliat I had said the law was unconstitutional,- and to go ahead, as there was no danger, &c. In this, shape the matter first obtained currency in the immediate neighborhood; and it went on increasing in mignituue, until l saw it in a still more exaggerated form in the Gazette, as well as elsewhere. 1 he original intention was not to misrepresent me, I feel satisfied, but to use my name for the purposes indicated. Ihe effect of the thing has been, however, whether intentional or not, gross injustice to me. I have never said, upon any occasion, that the law in question was unconstitutional, nor have 1 ever said anything that could be properly so interpreted. If I have ever been so understood, the fault was not mine, but in those who listened. Much less have I ever said that I would stand between any one and all danger who might violate the la w by selling in defiance of it. The expressions attributed to me would be in exceeding bad taste, considering my pres ent position, and are .such as I have never used upon any occasion whatever. I have never intended to place the law in question or defiance at any time. 1 have always, so far, advised an acquiescence in its provision. 1 have often been, as many persons must know. appealed to by writs of habeas corpus and otherwise, to interpose officially against its execu tion, but have uniformly declined, thus far, to do so, leaving the whole question to the Supreme Court, where it properly belongs at present. My position is, so far unchanged. No one need violate any of its provisions expectiug any guarantee or assurance ot protec tion from me. This much of explanation 1 have deemed due to myself, as well as the public, that my position as & public officer might not be misunderstood. I hope I have said enough to satisfy any reasonable mind upon that point, it is extremely annoying to any one occupying any public position, to have words and opinions attributed to him which he never expressed, but it is more especially so when they are perverted and used for a bad purpose; and I hope I may never again feel called upon to contradict expressions so wide ot truth. 1 ruly yours, WM. E. NIBLACK. MPleasaxt, Dec. 1st, 1855. Ia Town Hon John L. BoMnson, Has been ia town durins: severardays of the last week, gathering materials, we presume, from which to manufacture a car on which to ride into the Gubernatorial chair. It was the first time we havojbeen gratified with a glimpse of the physiognomy of this renowned Old Line, hisky advocating, "Lard Oil" smuprarlins orator. It is said that men wear upon 'the human face divine," some general index of thuir true character. He is just the last man in a thousand of any considerable public notority with whom we should wish to cultivate an acquaintance; and just the first whom we should suspect of taking advantage of our credulity, either in business or politics. Let the science of physiognomy shine upon his coun countenance and his brow betrays the scowl of the tyrant in his mouth he car ries the viciousness of the hyena in his hand, by whichjie flourishes a sword-cane, the evidence of a braggart and bully in his eye the treachery of the serpent that charms but to strike. In his whole countenance lurks the impress of deceit. Its a bad face, and if half is told that has been attributed to him politically it is one of the" strongest physiological triumphs in our krrowleifge'. We will not be charged with prejudice when we sky that our opinions were termed without a knowledge of who he was. . SlielbyviUe Banner. fjrA serious accident occurred near Shelbyville, Ky., on Saturday. Mr. McCormack, Miss Linsey, and Niss Scearce were in a buggy, when within three miles of town, the horse took fright and ran over the side of a bridge, instantly killing Miss Linsey, and slightly in juring Msis Scearce.
