' Explosion of the Steam Eire Engine Joe Eobs. .Yesterday afternoon the Steam f'ire' Engine' :'tJ.oe Moss," was placed at the crossing of Vine ajKl SixlU- 8troetSf to ro:,ke a trial, for the esj pCC;.ai l.wft 0f tbe officials of Chicago, who fans visiting our city for the purpose of witnessing the operaf ioris of these lire annihilates. About 4 o'clock, the time when her greatest power was being tested, lhe reciving chest exploded, instantly killing the F.nginecr, John Winterbottom, and wounding some other eentlemen. A. Li. Latta, inventorof the Steam Fire, Engine, was" badry scalded in the. face and on the arms. Jeremiah Brant, carpenter at the People's Theater, was scalded. Horace English, of" the Fire Company, was severely bruised. One or two others were slightly in jured- -'Mr.' Winterbottom leaves a wife and one child thirteen months old. ,H ;. . , The force of tho explosion was so great that it.threw Mr-' W. some distance into the a r, dismcinbering his legs and otherwise injuringhis body, which fell some yards from the engine ' Heveral panes of glass in Dr. Chapman's Drugstore, were also broken by the shock. From the testimony of the witnesses before Coroner Menzies, we learned these facts: that the steam was raised to 50 pounds to the square inch in 7 minutes, while it -took the engine "Latta" 12' minutes to gain tho same standard point; the usual working point is 60 pounds; in a few minutes the steam was up to 80 or 00j)ounds; whilst the engine was working rapidly the hose-pipe burst; somo person called to the engineer to stop the engine which ho did, though not instantly; almost as soon a it stopped working the explosion occurred; the engineer was warned but a few minutes previous that tho steam was getting too high, and cautioned by Mr. Latta about tho amount of water in the "fire chest;" the stara was at 180 pounds the highest point "in trials heretofore only about 115; that the engineer was inclined to have his own way. The verdict of the jury-was: that said Wintcrbottom came to his death by the explosion of the receiving chest of the Joe Ros, which happened from the follow ing cause: Want of suth'eient water in the fire box of said boiler, and that said deficiency of water in s;iid box came from want of rare by said Winterbottom during a trial of said engine on said day at said place. The jury was composed of some of our most reliable citizens. It is very probable that had not the bursting of the hosa pipe occurred, causing the crowd of persons in the immediate vicinity of the e ngine to full back, the mortality and injuries would have been much more fearful to racord. (Xu. Codi. 6ä. ' 07The residence of L. Bachelor, five miles from Jefferioriville, was destroyed by fire with all its contents on Sunday evening last!" The fire is supposed to have been accidental.
