either has an office or is making last tracks after one. So it may well be assumed that this meeting of the leaders has something to do with office, or the means of obtaining office. It is our impression that these gentlemen aro - 4 about "cutting and drying" the work for the Democratic State Convention, to meet on the Eth of January so that the delegates of the party assembled in convention will have but little trouble making the nominations. The leaders will have all that fixed up for them. They will have the offices all divided out among themselves, and the convention will be merely an interesting formality necessary for Ugaliting the nominations. The poor devils of Delegates who go there may imagine that they are making the Democratic nominations but that is all delusion. The nominations for every State office from Governor down to Supreme Court Reporter, will have been made in advance of the Convention by the office holders and seekers who lead their Democratic brethren by the nose. It is fixed already by these leaders, that A. P. Willard is to be the Old Line anti-American candidate for Governor. We think it is also pretty well fixed that A. P. Hovey, of Posey, will be candidate for Lieuf, Governor. His friends will at least have that or a pretty free fight The only thing against his chances is tho terrible thrashing he got last year. There appear to be plenty of candidates, however, for every office. It is delightful on uch occasions to always find so many patriotic gentlemen willing to sacrifice themselves for their country. That some of them will be sacrificed is just about as certain as that they have opposing candidates backed by the American and Republicans. OrFrom all quarters we have jreceived complaints of the failure of our paper to arrive at its destination, and this at various times during the exciting times of the election. Our paper was regularly mailed mailed with the regularity of clock work. Memphis Eagle The same complaint exists with us. Is there a publisher in the West or South who lias not heard more complaints of the failure of his paper to reach his subscribers the last tew months than in the preceding five years together? Every paper is groaning in its subtcription list at the miserable condition of our postal arrangements. Never before did the country so suffer from mail failures and delin quencies, considering the increased facilities for the carriage of mails, as at the present time. Complaints are rising from every part of the . country. America. Even the Minister of the Union in this country testified to 'the cordial sympathy of the'Cabinet of Washington, and the nation over which it presides. He expressed an apprehension as to the duration of our alliance with France, and our ability,' alone and unaided, to resist the overwhelming might of Russia; but he desired U3 to be tinder no apprehension on that account, 'for that the United States were ' willing to make our quarrel their own, and aid U3 with thousands of stout hearts and brawny arms,- s n I r' -'f -We cannot blame our Ministers, that in their urgent need of men1 they sought to avail themselves of the resources of- the West' At the same time the government " gave most stringent orders that nothing should be done in tne enaeavor to ooiain recruits, to violate the municipal " laws of . the United States. However, it unhappily soon became too apparent that the American Minister and the British Government had alike mistaken the posi tion of our trans-atlantic brethren. , The 3rmpathies of the land of freedom were found, in a great measure, enlisted on the side of Russia. Orders were immediately dispatched to America to desist from all attempts to recruit, an! give no cause of annoyance to the susceptibility f the nation. ' ' '-' ' U i ; ! The American Goverment determined, how ever, not to neglect the opportunity of turning public feeling in the interest of the presidential election of 1856.- Their Minister at London was desired to demand a discontinue ance of all endeavors at recruiting in the Uni ted States. The British Government answered in the most conciliatory, tone that what was demanded had been already done, and ordered an explanation which proved highly satisfacto ry to the American .Minister, who could no( but rememler his own sanguine anticipations of a contrary Jeceling, ana so for a time the matter remained. . , The American Government was not so easily satisfied, and returned to the attack with a despatch, of which we will only permit our-, selves to say that it was ill calculated to re store good feeling between the two countries, and by no means a fitting acknowledgement of the readiness shown by our ministry to recall a, mistake into which they had: been so innocently led. To that despatch the British Government has rendered a temperate but dignified reply, and has seconded its diplomacy by strengthening its West India fleet with the ships which have arrived from the Baltic. In this position affairs now stand. .. ' "" From the Liverpool Timea oi Saturday, Not. tat. , The misunderstanding with', the United State3 is attracting . throughout ;the British Empire a degree of, interest equal to the war with Russia. - That our relations with the Cabinet of War are implicated is, we fear, a truth which cannot be denied, but the exact cause of the embroilment is not by any means clear.
