. Baymond'i Amphitheatre. The Washington Fire Co. Xo. 1. having been disappointed in their engagement with the Minstrels this week, have secured the services of Raymond's Amphitheatre for a splendid exhibition for the benefit of the Fire Company, this evening. They have employed this Troupe for a stipulated sum, so that the larger the attendance the greater will be the gains of the Fire Company. We hope there will be a large turn out enough to fill the mammoth Favilon. There is an interesting Programe offered as will be seen by small bills. We arc assured the performance will be well worth seeing. Mutual Insurance Co. The Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Vanderburgh County, is now in full operation, and has already granted a great many policies. This company is made up of our own citizens, and is emphatically a Jwme company for mutual insurance. It has a large capital, and is in every respect a secureinstitution. We hope the liberal spirit with which it has been welcomed, will be con tinued. Mr. Jeremiah Behm is Secretary of ' the Company, and either him or the President, 3Ir. Wm. Baker, will be happy to give any information required about the rates, &c., of insurance in this Company. 07" There were no violations of the market ordinance yesterday morning, though much grumbling. We presume it would be utterly impossible for the Council to make any law that would not be grumbled at, or be inconvenient to many. The Council should recollect the fable of the old man and his ass, and do the best they can on the strength of their own judgments. CJ Some rain yesterday, with the appearance of more last night. Atmosphere very mild: &IVEE ITEMS. Tne Alvin Adams passed up very early yesterday morning. We thank Mr. Archer for a Wg package of St Louis papers. The Adams w5it return nöxt Sunday for St. Louis. The Sfc. Louis News says there is more business doing there at present at the wharf, than there has been doing the whole fieason before., 'Boats bound for the Ohio and up rivers, have no difficulty in getting freight at remunerative prices, but freights to New Orleans scarce. A great deal of produce is coming in from the upper rivers. The Missouri river is in a Very bad stage, with no prospect of a rise. River on a stand at St. Louis last Tuesday, with ten feet water to Cairo. The Fanny Bullitt left New Orleans on Tuesday last for Louisville. The R. J. Ward has given up her trip on account of the low water. The splendid packet Thos. Swann will be down . early this morning, unless she gets lodged oh a sand bar, for St. Louis. She is one of the best packets, and unexcelled in ' speed and accommodations. The John Tomkins was to have left Louisville last evening for Tennessee River, and may be expected here to-day. Travelers bound that direction will find the Tomkins a first rate craft. Ned Woolfolk, of the clerk's office, will do the agreeable all around. The Memphis Eagle of the 24th u.U., Bays: , 1 The "Empire' which passed down on Monday night, refused to stop and land her Memphis passengers at the wharfboat, but passed on and put them ashore, in the rain, at Fort Pickering. The clerk of the boat had come ashore at Memphis in a yawl and took some carriages down .to Fort Pickering to bring up the passengers. There were two ladies among the passengers Mrs. Provost Adams, the cel ebrated actress, being one. We understand by a communication from Mrs. Adam3 in the following day's Eagle, that Capt. Meekin had been compelled to promise his passengers not to land at Memphis. He tried to get their consent to land, but they made him abide by his promise. The David White, after iyiftg aground several days at French Island, was pulled off by the Rainbow last Wednesday. She arrived here Wednesday, and laid ail Wednesday night, leaving early yesterday morning. We dont thank Willy Mitchell for late papers this ' time, sure. We hope the David will get out safely. Capt McGill would not take on any freight here. The Fashion did not get down till yes tjrday afternoon. She stopped at New burg ' and took on a large lot of stock for St. Louisa ,We thank Mr. Clark and Cy Drew Jr.,- for a big package of papers. There is no change for the better reported in the river above. "Nothing new from the Crimea." The bisr boats are having a hard 0 ' time of it. The J. M. Stockwell has come out : again after a long rest. She may be expected I down from Louisville to-day for New Orleans, if she has hot already arrived ere this appears. Harmonious Democracy. The New York 'papers give an account of a Tiere' meeting at Tariirhany Hall, which indicates that all the 'time Tionorcd observances of the party axist in full force yet There was rather more than the usual amount of yelling and quite as much as usual of fighting, tfere are a couple of paragraj hs: . Fists flew, riati . dodged blows, and men 'stamped about, shaking their paws and crying '"Howard." .' 'Several men were considerably bruised by knuckles enthusiastic for Harry Howard, and one man wns pulled off the platform and seriously pounded. Altogether the meeting Was more than usually HtcIj.
