German Evangelical Eion Church. There has been but one church edifice erect ei in Evalisvilla this season. ; All sects , ap pear to be pretty well supplied with churches by this timo the tall steeples of which are pointing to heaven from almost every part of the city. The German Evangelical Sion church congregation, under the pastorage of He v. Christian Schrinck, a devout and most worthy man, have just completed a large and very substantial building for the worship of God, in the uppsr part of .the city, on the site of their old church. It is the third in siae of all in the city. It is built of brick, of a very superior quality; and all the material used, and the workship employed, are of the most substantial, quality. . The limensions' of the building are 40 by 75 feet, and 26 feet 6 inches from floor to ceiling. The ceiling is arched. There : are two aisles leading from the front doors to the pulpit, with two tiers of pews in the centr-3 for females, aud two outer tiers for males. These pews will accommodate about 600 persons comfortably. The pulpit is very neat, and raised high so that the minister'shead may be about half way between the floor and - ceiling, by which and a broad sounding board above, the voice even when low,' can he heard distinctly to the remotest corners of the room. . On each side of the; pulpit . are pews. The windows are in the Gothic style, and very large. The sash of these windows, are made entirely of light cast iron, and ' cost less than the window sash of similar . windows in the Catholic church. They were cast here... At present, there is no steeple to the church, but a design has been prepared for one similar to that of the German Evangelical church, though not so large. It will be erected just so soon as the means of the congregation, who are poor th ugh numerous, will admit. The roo ing of the church ii built very strong, so that when the present shingle roof; shall decay, a slate roof may be substituted.. ' ; There is on3 fact in connection with the erection of this churcli, which speaks well for the congregation and their energy and indus try. - It was erected entirely by themselvesi both pecuniarily and practically." They found the means, and members of the congregation did the duTjrent parts of the work, the carpentering, brick, work, &c., &c, The work has been well done too throughout. ' We may srty here in this connection, that the Germans of , Evansville and Lamusco, have six churches, all well . attended.' They have , the three largest or among the laxgest churches in the cit. They appear to support their preachers well, have good places of worship, and lend them a free and steady attendance. , ', ' Mariae Hospital.! ' This splenlid building is now nearly completed. Cut little more work remains to bo done. It stands on a beautiful position just below the city," and is the first thing that strikes the eye of the stranger on steamboat coming un or down the rivor, mile's' distant. This building was erected by Government, t a cost of nearly sixty thousand "dollars. lIt is built on a plan similar to tfiat of the Marine Hospitals at Louisville and Paducah, yet it is a handsomer piece of work, with the improver ment of beautiful iron verandahs and cast iron pillars in front and rear instead of mere brick pillars and palings. Hon. Jas. Lockhart is superintendent in-' the erection of the building, and Mr. Jas. Roquet, Architect. : This building is one of the most elegant specimens of pressed brick work in the West. It has been built in the most substantial manner throughout All the" floors are double and filled in, thus deadning sounds, and making very solid floors. The mantels' are of flue Italian marble. t . , The brick, for the building were made and burned on the ground, by Mr. Mclnerny. iThe corners or " angles of the; building from the ground up, are of finished stone and of course the' foundations the saiaej:, The- Cloverport stone has been used for this, it being selected from a'number of specimens presented to the examination of the authorities at Washington. The building will bo heated throughout by furnaces ; erected in the cellar.,-.The- roof is covered with a very heavy article of tin-. 'The edifice will comprise many late improvements nr.f. injfäimilar buildinss in the West. These buildines are eurjerior to anv-countvJ f7 aV a" cd ifices of the kind, probably,' in Indiana. They have been built with an eye to beauty; durability and comfort . The Court -Höusö stands out boldly on one of the: ;most public blocks in the city, and at once, arrests the eye of the stranger from its beauty : and - dimensions.'1 The Sheriff's house is along side, and looks, like the dwelling of some .well to. do citizen, while the jail, under the same roof in a manner, is concealed from public view, as a public prison should be when in the heart of a city: .These buildings ornament the 'part of city jn which they are located. ;;.-; . ... The Court House is 86 feet front by 60 feet deep, with front and side entrances. At the front entrance on Main street are four masve columns of the Öoric order, with a; wide flight of stone steps, leading to a hall which connects with : the main or long hall, which has entrances at the north and south sides of the building. 'Along this hall are arranged the county offices Clerk's, Auditor's Sheriff's, Recorder's and Treasurer's. These are on the first floor, and are large, airy and well lighted rooms, and each office except the Sheriff,', has a capacious and jire-proof vault for the preservation of. record,, &c. The Clerk's office is 21 by 32 feet Along one side of it is a large glass casing in which are; filed away county documents, properly labeled, so that they may noticed without removing, and kept in perfect order. The- Auditor's office is 22 by 25- feet and f the other offices are in proportion. They are convenient to the public" and convenient to those who occupy them. . Two" broad flights of stairs lead to the second story, where the court room is located. ; This room is 40 by 70 feet, and 21 feet high?' -There is a declining floor fi-om the door' to the rear, of the room, where the. 'Judge's Bench and Bar are placed. The room is well seated, and very comfortable. Connected with it are Grand Juryt Pettit Jury, and Lady Witness rooms, of the same height as the court room, and of good dimen sions. ..I be house is brick, stuccoed on the out side, and surmounted by a dome of over 30 feet in diameter, and proportionate in height, The court house is surrounded by a very 'hand some iron fence, which estends to. the Sheriff's house and jail, embracing them bothv . i The Jail is a model of security and strength. It is 29 by 69 feet, with 8 cells below and 8 above,' entirely disconnected, from each other. The upper cells are reached by two flights of iron steps leading each to an iron balcony running the length of the jail, and both balconies entirely disconnected. Each cell 'is. .8 by 12 feet, with a 'massive or very strong door of latticed iron, secured, by the latest patent pris pp. locks.- The cells are formed of' massive blocks of stone- iron.bcrund togetherj and are itnpre'gnaUe. i.The floors' separating the upper and lower cells are just as strong as the walls themselves;' The cells are . heated by hot air, and lighted by gas from without, so that' fire I is; not necessary to be introduced in any shape. i . ...... ' . . .i - - . In connection jWU.li the jaü are water works by means of wgchanda force pump, every cell is proyided with water, which can be ob tained at any time by turning a stop-cock. The Jail fs surrounded by a court, , the walls of which reach to the roof covering the whole and contain long windows, with, perpendicular iron bars for security. ; This court allows the prisoners, if necessary, a place ' for exercise, and where they are almost as secure as in their cells. : The Jail and Court House are covered by slate roof. i ,.' ...l-.j i,9c"j '; -a j The' Sheriff's' House is separated fVnf the Jail by a hall, and both are really ljnder one roof, lliis building is, simply p,: large, substantial and neatly finished dwelling, 39 feet square.: ! it contains eight hirge ana comfort able rooms, with a wide hall, Jouble parlors, cellar, &c.
