man, to ascer'tJtin whether our tivst impressions could have boen wrong. Now, it is a matter of astonishment to us, that so open and arrant and rascally a demagogue, should ever have attained to the position he is now disgracing that so" precious a political scamp, even with bis oily smoothness and wiley twaddle, should impose on any community as even a decent politician, much less a cons.stent Christian. Half
of hia speech here was made Up of gross flat
tery of our pao'ple and city; and of professions
of exceeding partiality to Evansville and of exceeding great love for its people. The "soft lawder" was swallowed even by many of his opponents. Tho only open chance he has h:d since to benefit our place and people, was by giving us what in all justice we should have had the Canal Trustee. But instead of doing this he gave the office to his own brolher-ih-law, and to a man whom previous trial had fcllcwh Utterly unfit for the office. Gov. Wright has shown himself even since ho occupied his present position, a low partisan, stooping to the most degrading actions to maintain favor with hia party; arid apparently forgetting that there is any portion of his constituency entitled to decent respect, except the Old Lino Democracy, lie has even failed to secure the united respect and approval of his own party, while every man out of his party must regard hira as a most unscrupulous politician and a most unprincipled demagogue General Sickness. Wö deübt whether within the memory of the oldest inhabitant, tho Western country was ever more sickly than it has been tho present 6ummer and fall. We hear complaints from all quarters. . The labor on many public works ba3 almost entirely ceased, and in some places there is scarcely enough in good health to take care of the sick. Tho sickness is not so much of a fatal nature, as chills and fevers, bilüouä attacks, &c. Evansville has had but comparatively little sickness this summer, although much more unhealthy than usual. A
tar less proportion of its people have suffered under indisposition, than in almost other Western town or city. We have had a very wet and sultry summer, with rank vegetation, and everything almost in tho Way of weather calculated to produce sickness. But we have fortunately escaped all epidemics. Cool fall weather has set in, and we look for a speedy change in the general health of the West.
upon tho virtues of Jesus Christ, much after the fashion that one of the b'hoys at the race course will speak of a boon companion." And once again : "A lady, whose general charity and practical piety even" tho tongue of calumny has never dared to attempt to tarnish, once remarked to the writer, that had it been a possible thing to shake her faith iu tho religion taught her by her mother the plotting diplomacy and'iinning intrigue" she had witnessed amoiisrst the
ijuiiiters cf the Methodist Church; from
twenty or thirty years association with them, as the wife of one of their number, she; long ago, would have been an out right and avowed intidel. The writer of the aljove extracts is a disgrace to his profession, lie truly shows "his majesty" has one mouth piece in the Indiana press. That is enough for the State. We hope 'His Majesty" will secure no more converts, or that if he does, he will clothe them, so fiir 3 their language is concerned, in the outward habiliments of a gentleman.

Thomas, John Young, S. J. Bwadwell, and R. liuchanan. For some time reports have been in circulation iu regard to the management of the atfairs of this corporation which have tended to depress the stock and induce the belief that the finances of the Company were in a "miserable condition." AH the gentlemen composing the new board, except one, it is almost needless to say are residents of this city, and are of such standing in this community as to inspire the most unbounded confidence in their capacity to manage the atfairs of the Company, efficiently, and honestly; as regards this there can be but one opinion. A report of the affairs of the road, from this board, will be implicitly relied upon by the entire community; and the first thing the new board sh'Hild do is to issue such a report, fully and fearlessly, and let all those interested see at once how the matter stands. Mr. Barlow; the only member of the Board who is not a citizen of Cincinnati, is a resident of New York, and is thi assignee, we believe; of J. D. Bacon and of 1'age & Bacon, lie is an eminent lawyer; and will ably and eiliciently fill his place in the Board. The stockholders have great reason to congratulate themselves upon their success inin-

late fire. He has already gone vigorously to work repairing the evil; and we ore authorized to say that the Mines will lie in full operation again in about a mcnth. There is to be a house built over the engine; and another tall and substantial scaffolding placed over- the shaft for the purpose of drawing up coal, &-c. Mr. K. has sent to England for a new cable, the particular kind needed for the works not being obtainable in this country, and the order is probably now in England. The old cable was purchased there, and was nearly destroyed by the fire. We are glad to understand the Rodiam Mines will bo in operation again soon, as we had anticipated a long delay. Rut Mr. Kersteman possesses the Yankee goaheaditivcnc.fs, and is apt to "make things fir,"
will now be done, without a doubt.
The following appeared in Thursday's Commercial: Meeting of the Creditors.
