' X"1"' Singular. ; Effects of Lightning A House destroyed by a Fire Ball The Portland Advertiser gives an account 'of the singular effect of lightning which occurred on Monday evening last, J4th jtist , at 6 o'clock, at the house o( Capt. David tJpton, of Great Chebeaqe Island, Maine. .The house was struck by, lightning, during the storm. A neighbor who wos looking at the house at the time, perceived , a ball of fire, apparently a foot in diameter, with a trail thirty yar is long, descending uoon the chimney, and immediately after a volume of moice oegan laascena, as it the house was on nre. Hastening to tne nouse it was found a wreck, but not on Are. The Advertiser says: "The family, of six persons, were at slip per, and their escape with their lives is a miracle. Ulu airs. Upton's arm is cut to the bone, abovethe elbow, and she is otherwise badly bruised. Her grand-daurrer Marietta Hamilton, six years old, is so oruis cd as to be purple from the hips to the (et, and is in a precrious condition. David Upton, Jr., is badly bruised about the head and face. HiA child in his arms was unhurt; also hfS wife, standing near; and old Mr. Up ten-, likewise unhurt. "Öut the effects of the lightning about the premiä'es are astonishing. Old Mr. Upton was eating a bowl of bread and milk, with one hand upon the bowl, the other holding the spoon the bowl was broken iii his hand", and the spoon has hot been found. Old Mrs. Upton had a cup of tea in her hand; and when she came to herself she was partly ander the table, with a piece of the cup in Iher hard and herself covered with lhe wreck of the chimney, among which was a piece of timber, from the front of the fire-plate; eiaht 'feet long, with a flat bar of iron of the same length attached The grand-daughter was thrown from her seat at the table to near the fire-place, and 'was literall? covered wi'h bricks and mortar. Nearly every article of crockery in the house, two clocks, three looking glasses, and two old fashioned oak tables in the kitchen were emcshed. The chair in which old Mrs. iUpton was sitting was broken into twentyeight .pieces at any rate that number of pieces belonging to it were found; every chair in 'the kitchen was broken. I very partition in the bouse was removed from its position and more or less shattered. The fluid seems to have gone through the bottom of a cooking stove, sitting Hi the kitchen fire place, leaving h hole as if made by a shot four inches in diameter, taking off one leg ot the stove, entering th roil-.. through the floor, leaving a hole iarge enoueh for an ordinary man to pass. "JilVery window-sash in the house is com pletely demolished, excepting one in the west chamber. Here and there is a squire of gl with' space cut out as if by the point of a uiauiuriu, juai me Kite Ol a uritur-iwu inches by eight showing that a brick had been projected, through it "quick as" lightning." Five (fours in the lower part of the house were shattered to pieces. Most of the material projected from the house were in a northerly direction pieces ot glass and mortar being found tixty feet distant. Between the hou'-e and barn are a duzen apple trees; one large tree near the house was untouched, but two others, pome six rods distant, were shattered: A Jarre light trunk, filled with fine clothing &.c, was found and apparently uninjured outwardly, but on being opened, the soot Ironi' the chimney Jay half an inch thick over the contents, and sifted through in every direction. Ten pans of milk on the shelf in the cellar were unharmed, yet some empty pans, one within the other, on the same shelf, were broken up. The fluid passed out through eight different places in the body of the house, be sides those already described. More of the effects might be given, yet enough is told to show feow complete was the destruction." TELEGRAPHIC! Halifax, N. t., June 8.
