Crescent Hall Vvns beautifully decorated last night, there was a good tuen ' dance) the children were happy, 'and we pre sume every-body delighted. We hope to see even a greater crowd there to-night. 'Carmel, and wns so much injured that he was unable to swim; the swift current took him capidly away and before assistance could be rendered, from shore he was drowned dead, in about 4 feet wmter. He had previously followed the river, in boating season, and . fished for a living when he was outofem floyraent. He had no family. ' :' . Heavt Damages.- A verdict for seven thousand five hundred dollars has been obtained in Henderson county, Tennessee, against Rev. J. R. Graves, editor of the Tennessee Baptist, for libel utterance in that Sk paper. . OCT A clergyman was censuring a young lady for tight lacing. "Why," replied the Miss, "you would not surely reccommend loose habits to your parisho'ners." The . Clergyman smiled of course. JCfDoctor Beale, the Philidelphia dentist is said to be lying dangerously ill, in th'e county prison, in Philadelphia, and it ia feared tkat he cannot survive his time of imprison ment. We find the following in the Indianapolis Republican of Monday last, which would indicate that some injury bad been done the crops in that region by frost. We are happy to state that no 'damage has been ustained in this vicinity : The frost on Saturday night ws severe, ' biting the corn to the ground; and potates, beans, tomatoes, and other tender vegetables . suffered to about the same extent. . As usual, there are various opinions as to 'the damage done to the wheat. From personal observation we should say it was not variously injured, though evidently touched. Te Mediterranean being generally out of blonsom, is, not irjured. Some of the White Wheal in the coldest soils may be killed, though it seems to us the bite is not so severe as in 1845, when a hue und cry was raised, bat a very good crop. We believe, however it was not then in blossom. The average wheat crop in this county will not be heavy, as there was a great deal winter-killed. The fruit last night was heavv. tf" The fast Star Line packet Glendale was here yesterday morning from Cincinnati with a good freight fi.r New Orleans. Slie took on some freight here. , The "W. A. Barnum, of Bridgeport, Conn., is working an elephant on his farm that is as docile as a cow, draws carts and stoneboats, loads wood, piles timber, picks up jtones, and makes himself generally useful. After ploughing with him about a week, he aya, that be drives the subsoil plough down sixteen to twenty-one inches in a tiht, .hard sward, and then moves off easily 'and learly twice as fast as a horse, ploughing scorrec'.ly as the best broken team. The provision market is fiim, and prices have slightly advanced; the market closing steady. Lard was steady and prices unchanged. Sugar and coffee were firm but they closed dull. The British Parliament had adjourned over until the fourth of June. On the 24th ult, Lord Palmeraton had a private meeting with the members of Parliament at his house; over two hundred were present.
