The Enquirer of yesterday, in giving the result of the Lamasco election, had the nameless impadence to make the following remark fcr the especial use and benefit of those abroad who could nercr by any possibility know the facts of the affair from the tame paper. It said the election "resulted 1n complete anti-Know Nothing triumph fcy a majority of about 420 votes" the 'figures themselves beinj totally ridiculous in any connection, as bill one candidate in the lot had as hijjh as one hundred majority over his opponent! Now it U a fact that the most 'prominent anti-Know Nothings in 'Lamasco were defeated at this election and not a 'Catholic candidate was elected! Tremendous anti-Know Nothing victory indeed! The Know Nothings had no ticket, yet it is a lingular fact, and rather contrary to the Enquirer's opinion of !the result, that nearly 'every mau they 'voted for was elected, and 'if we mistake not, two persons elected, and by Old Line 'votes in part, are very goad 'Know Nothings! Ha! ha! ha! We could very readily run though this 'ticket, and will do it if it becomes necessary, 'and convince any one interested, that the result of the election was anything but the victory it has been claimed by the Enquirer. We are pleased to say, that so far as we know, all the officers elected are well quali'fied for their positions, at least are about the best choice of the whole list. We hope La'masco city will flourish under their care, and continue her present prosperity with in'create. Our Eastern tic We are informed by Postmaster Slinson, 'thatunder the new arrangement of change 'of time on the E. & C. Railroad, the mails 'which leave here six o'clock in the morning, 'three hours earlier than at present, will lay at Terre Haute till next day before they trt nn tn . Tninrmn..!; and East. And 'mails sent 'this direction, vill stop at Terre Haute for a day until next Jay's Evansville 'train leaves. Thus under the new arrangement, according to this statement, our Eastern mails will beiflelayed in their arrival at 'least two hours over the present time, and Whence can only be opened and distributed latein the evening, and letters answered 'at niht to go off in the 6 o'clock train Hhus to secure nearly equal promptness with the present arrangement. This is a series of inconvenience which cannot and will not be submitted to, if there beany rossiblo Remedy. There is not a particle of necessi. ty for the mails from or to this city by rail'road, bins at Terre Haute over an hour. The mails are not distributed there, and 'there ia no reason of this nature for detention, We have all been looking forward to the new arrangement as placing us in our mails as well as travel, one day nearer the Eastern and up-river cities but it appears, by the statement of our Postmaster, that for the present at least, we are by this railroad connectiori put several hours further apart. This is a ludicrous evidence of the march of .Vtoztw, but it certainly cannot last long, 'Our Railroad Company will find it to their advantage, so far as their enterprise is con - cerned, in this new arrangement experiment, to affect a change soon as possible in this deficiency of speedy and nninterupted mail carriage, if the responsibility belongs in any manner to them. Virginia Election. he election in the Old Dominion takes $!ace on the 24th of this month. A Gov ernor and other State officers, a Legislature, upon which devolves the choice of United States Senator, and thirteen members of Congress, are to be elected. Unusual interes, is manifested all over the Union in the result. The canvass has been conducted by both parties with extraordinary spirit 'and animation, and the whole country is looking to the result with singular interest. Virginia has been known as a strong Democritic State. She gave Pierce 15,261 majority in 1852, but the Democracy have had ample time and opportunity since to become disgusted with their own former success, and to exhibit that true repentance which deals in good works. Although Democratic paper are predicting the triumphant election t)f Wise, we do not conceive his election to be at all probable, and we 'should deem it entirely impossible but for the unwise and impolitic action of several Know Nothing conventions, who would not leave the slave ry question alone, though their very salva tion depended upon silence. Ateno Bales. On the next page, at the head of the column next the reading Blatter, readers will always find auction sales. We intend hereafter placing all sales by auction in the column designated, so that the reader may at once know where to find such advertisements. A new card and auction sale by Woolsey & Neleon, will be found thefe to-day, with Sweet & Leon ard's advertisements. These houses have several regular sales a week, and ' notices of the more Important ones wiH always- be found io that colaran.
Our Constables) gal Will they Resign! ' Our article yesterday about the exceedingly efficient Old Line constables, was rather in advance cf the times. The richest scene, the most laughable anecdote of all, was reserved.for. yesterday, and after it, if there is a man in town who . does not demand the instant resignation of Staht and Kripnerfor their counection, in this af
fair and Clifford for what we have related of him, then we say that man cares nothing for the preservation of law or of the honor of our city. These two constables went to the 6teamer Empire yesterday after dinner, with a warrant for the mate on some assault and battery case. The mate Was in the hold at the time, working with his men. Capt. Meekin so informed these "officers, and directed them to go down there, but they were afraid to venture. 'Finally, as the constables were in the way, and attracting the deck hands from their business, Capt. M. ordered them either to do their duty or leave the boat, and finally pushed one of them on shore for stopping the gangway. The constables got more help (not official) and went again to the a'.tack. The mate was then working his men ashore. lie was pointed out to these precious constables by both the captain and the citizens, but they were unwilling to believe, as presently a deck hind would come up and order cround the mate to his work with as great a variety of d ns as that mate or any other could pos sibly use! The poor cjnstibulary dupes were sent to first one part of the boat then another in search of the mate, who was be fore their eyes all the time, even to the knowledge of the pedlar boys and girls who enjoyed the sport amazingiy. Finally they were induced to go in the hold, when the enterprising deck hands clappeddown the for vard hatchway, and were making good time towards the aft hatch to secure it, but the constables beat them in the race and escap ed. For two hours these men were the butts of ridicule either too cowardly to take the mate, or read a warrnnt to him, or too grossly green to tell that the man direci i : j . i "uo ttllu fuini; aruunu wiu crew, arm known as the mate to eVsry boy on board, was .really that individual. We do not I n a o . Know wnen our city lias ever been p'ac ed in a more contemptible light by the acts of its officials than on this occasion. Neither duty nor decency, under the ludic rous circumstances, called upon citizens present to help these men perform their la bors. The whole affair was too absurdly ri It a . f am a u;cuious ior serious inienerence. i nat men, clothed with the authority of office, and uh der that authority attempting to perform du ties.should permit themselves to be placed in this laughable position, is not only uncontrovertable evidence that they are utterly un qualified for their position, but that their longer continuance in office is a disgrace to our city- As a firm upholder of the credit nd honor ol tne c,t of Lvansville, and as an editor whoh" devoted all his powers for I . . a i ii years to elevate tnis piace not only in an Uhe attributes of prosperity, but in all the proper attribute of a city, and who seeks to I l . We would here say, in justice to ourself, that we have already exhibited in connec tlon whh this boat, and its present captain, equally as firm a determination to maintain our ojlccrs, when they do their duty proper Uy and are abused. In this case, Capt. Meekin ollered no improper interference, nor did bis mate, excepting to concealhis identi ty Once more, we call upon these men to re sin. INDIANAPOLIS COllUESPOXDEXCE
IsDiAiuroLis, May 5, 1855. Ed. Journal: We have had a decided novelty here in the way of musical entertainments. The "Black Swan" has visited us and given a concert. Our largest Halt was filled' with an intelligent and discriminating audience, who awarded to the MSvan" their unmixed gratification of her extraordinary musical powers. She is accompanied by a"gentlemanof color," styled on the bills "the African Maris," who both figures as a solo singer, and accompanies the 'Swan" occasionally in a duett. His style of singing is decidedly operatic and bears the mark of thofrough training and discipline, though his natural ' powers were pronounced by our critics as of no very hiuh order. A young man styled Signor Alberti, who was probably never nearer Italy than New Eng land, is also attached to the company as pianist. His attainments seem not to be ex traordinary. It is worth paying a trifle for, barely as a novelty, to see a white man presiding at the piano, and a son and daugh ter of EtheopIaon either hand, discoursing strains of music in a style of execution nev er heard in one of a thousand of the most luxurious parlors of the land. The "Swan" must have received her sobriquet, solely on account of her musical powers, (granting that Swans Jo sing) and not at all from any resemblance in grace or dignity to her feathered namesake. She is a dark mulatto, of large size, and without a particle of ease or grace in her movement. 13 ut her genuine modesty, and simplicity of manner, amounting to the most entire freedom from air, cover that defect, and invariably secure her the sympathy and good will ot her audieuce. in regard to her singing, however, she needs no sympathy and can afford to court severe criticism. Your correspondent does not pride himself on his musical acumen, and has therefore sought to learn the opinions of those among the recent hearers of this sable artist, who are competent to judge of the quality of her execution. The general sentiment seems to have been that of surprise, and high gratification; and more than one has remarked that he never heard her surpassed save by the matchless and almost superhuman Jenny Lind. Her voice is said to embrace thirty-one full and distinct notes. In some passages, far above the range of ordinary female voices, her tones bore a striking resemblance in clear nd silvery fullness, to the higher notes of a flute, in the hands of a master. At the other extreme of the scale she is equaly extraordinary. In one instance she re sponded to an encore by taking hr seat at the piano and singing a popular melody in a deep and full male voice, a phenomenon in female singing rarely heard, and which was recognized by the audience with reiterated applause. In the air "I know that my Re dceraer livelh," which has become almost consecrated as a favorite of Jenny LindV the execution of the Swan was many de grees below that of the Nightingale, in high artistic brilliancy of execution, as well as feeling. Yet I think it quite probable, hid there been no choice memory of that match less performance lingering in the minds of any of the auditors, that the Swan would have been considered as triumphant in that piece as in others. For the sake of my well remembered and highly prized lady friend among your read ers, I ought to say that the colored individual in question, seems, in regard to dress, to have applied the principle laid down by the milk maid in Webster's old spelling book, and to have carefully studied "what becomes her complexion best." She has also ascertained the point to a nicety. She wore a rich dark silk, dimly figured, with a ground precisely of her own hue, short sleeves and white gloves, avoiding altogether that dis play of jewelry, and bright colors in contrast, which, as it is correctly set forth in Uncle Turn's Cabin, is characteristic of the African taste. Col. Wood, who owns the speculation! and who, by a somewhat equivocal compliment is called the Barnum of the West, expressed his intention here of visiting Evansville in his present tour. I doubt not your musical public will avail themselves of the opportunity of attending so unique an entertainment. Yours, A. B. C. CaptüHe of Havana. A writer in the New Ycrk Mirror is showin'f the difference between taking Havana oi papert and taking it vi'et armis. The memories of the filibusters are refreshed with the account of an attack upon the place by the English in 17G2, and its disastrous results: The English fleet consisted of ninereeh ships of the line and eighteen frigates, with various other smaller vessels of war, and some 200 transports, under command of Pocork, and 10,000 soldiers under Gen. Msnckton. The canonade, we are told continued seven days; the siege had lasted twenty days with little hope of taking the Moro. At this time the English received a reinforcement of 4,000 fresh troops. Now inspired with new hopes, the attack was renewed; their exertions redoubled, and at last with success. On the 22d day of the inemrrable siege the fort was captnred. The city held out a few days and then surrendered, to prevent unnecessary sacrifice of lifp. I The loss sustained by the English army ! and navy was horrible. The English histori&n aware howdearl7 this victory was ob tained, prudently omitted to record how many were killed and wounded. Contemporary writers (not English) say thia fort cost England over one thousand men."

Gov. Gardner presided on the occasion, and a strong delegation from New York and other States participated. By dispatches, it will be seen several Governors were to be present. Sisgulab Case. There is at present in the hospital cf the Roule, at Paris, a grena dier sergeant of rhe 59th regiment of the line, named Tourviclle, who has become deaf and dumb in consequence of the sensation produced by the explosion of a bombshell with in a few feet of him, in the' trenches at Sevastopol. His recovery seemsuntertain. Mr. Matt DeGarmo, long of this city, has taken up his residence in Terre Haute, and can now be found by his old friends at that most popular of all Terre Haute hotels, the Prairie House. He is act ing as clerk there, and will take particular delight in assiitmg the proprietor to make their Evansville friends comfortable. We wish Matt a pleasant time, and think he will soon make himself an indispensable fixture to the Prairie House. fX" Evenin'j before last the weather changed suddenly much cooler, and the night was quite cold for the seaScn.
