Election la Lsmlsvllle. - tThe eity election for magistrates and constables was held in'Louisville last Saturday. The American ticket was entirely successful. The Sunday . Times intimates that there was mob violence, but it does not descend to particular further than to say: Wm. Gray t citizen of this city was shot. Twenty-one shots were fired at him, and aa a a two only took effect, tie nad seven Dan holes through his hat. His wounds are not 'mortal. The Know Nothings broke open several German houses and frightened the women badly. They a I no set fire to a brewery belonging to a German. . It will be very singular if the facts don't turn out very different from the Times account. ., It has become a regular business for Old Line editors to hold American born citizens responsible for every act of violence and infamy committed at elections, and make out the foreign born as models Jof sobriety, virtue, and order. This contemptible policy of charging every act of scoundrel lies upon Datives, and allowing no possible virtue in any man except hebe foreign bora, is ' doing more to strengthen the American fitting than all the works of the Know Nothings. . We hold that Americans are quite as orderloving, law-abiding citizens, as those of our citizens who were born on any other soil and those editors who are insisting upon the contrary! are insulting their con try men, and statins that which has no fouudation is facts or experience. ' If etc Orleans Pstaaaater. The New Orleans papers are making t . large display of goose-quill thunder, over .; their postmaster's arrest, more especially the plan of prosecution adopted by the President. In fact the criminality of the officer has . dwindled down very small smid the excite meet created by the novel atyle of prosecution instituted by the Postmaster general. It appears that the President and Mr. Camp be)!, have for some cause known only to themselves, superseded the U. S. District Attorney whose duty ' it is by virtue of his office to prosecute Air. Kendall. This extra ordinary proceeding createa no alight sensa tion in the public mind in regard to the designs of the Postmaster General. The people of. New Orleans cannot divest , . the matter of a suspicion that the delinquent post master is to be shown some favoritism. Had the Government seen fit to render the '' District Attorney assistance in so impor'ant prosecution, nothing strange would have , been thought of it, but the idea that he is thus unofficially ousted, cannot be easily re. onciled. - The case has been given to the , exclusive charge, of another to prosecute, meanwhile the District Attorney is awaiting an explanation from the Department. Mr. Kendall, it would appear, was an obnoxioua - appointment from the atart, and . the alleged charge against him has caused much excitement. ' Gov. Reeses at Home. Gov. Reeder, of . Kansas, reached Easton, Pa., his former home, on the 30th ult., where he had a most enthusiastic reception at the hands of his , friends and former neighbors. In reply to a formal welcome cxtendad to him by Hon. J. 21. Porter, Gov. Reeder responded at some length. Among other things he referred to the . reports of frsud and outrage upon the part of slavery men in the Kansas election, and emphatically confirmed th worst state merits which had preceded bis arrival. He eaid his opinions on the subject of popular . sovereignty had undergone no change, but that the conduct of tbe people of the border counties of Missouri had astonished and amazed him by their reckless disregard of all laws, compacts aad constitutions. Affray at Green IX Ire r. We learn from some men who have just come from Green River, that a man named Sketo, formerly a penitentiary bird, and a lad named John Magard, had a regular fist ght last Sunday, at the mouth of Green River. Afterwards Sketo attacked Joseph Price, owner of a store boat, who stabbed Sketo three times in the right shoulder. One of the wounds is dangerous, although Dr. Slaughter, of Newburgh, thinks the man will recover. Price moved over to the Indi ana ahore, but says he will not run off. Zlagard waa arrested. Ritursid. Since then they hare given several practical illustrations of the truth of our remarks, with- the exception of Maurice Spratt, who is diking, to far as we ! can learn, every good officer. We have one or two aneedotea to tell of these con stables, which are rather too good to keep. The mate waa busily engaged putting out about fifty tons of freight. One of the constables stepped up to him and inquired: ' . . ' . "Pe's youte mate!" O j ' . So he stood on one sidi and the other constable on the other, keeping about ten feet distant from the mate who was determined to ignore their existence . i "I guy, you mate I'sh been and got a warrant for you, and I wants you to' walk up to Squire Walker'a office." 'v'-'-'i ' "Hurry out them nails, spoke the mate grofly and angrily to his crew "Hurry 'em out, you darned lazy whelps hurry 'em out." ' MTho divil take ye, Mister Matefaith and weve got a warrant for ye, and it's up to Squire Walker's we want ye to go. D n yer eyes, wont you never get out them rails! Hurry 'em along, I say.' Tbe Mats atepped on beard; the boat shoved out and left, leaving our worthy constables wonderinff what to do next. We un derstand they reported to tbe Squire, that the boat had gone when they got down. Another German constable wassent down to levy on a pilot's trunk on the Ella. He went aboard, found the p. lot and had the trunk pointed out, then said he was going to take it on execution. "Who are you, and what do you ferean?" ssked tho pilot. ('Oh! I pes de constable, and has ex ecution against dis trunk." "You are a thfef, and want to steal the trunk." "No I pes de constable, and must have de trunk." "Constable, the devil! You a conatable and an Evansville constable! Get off this boat, you infernal thfef you don't steal my trunk, I tell you. And he. waa hustled off in a hurry, and without the trunk. .Return, we presume, no moveable property found! But if these were illustrations of mere ridiculous inefficiency, we .have one other Host ration ofsomething more serious and we here say, we do not write to ridicule or abuse these officers, but to illustrate what a noble set of officers of this description, tbe Old Liners have elected to take charge of important business. WHle a case wss on trial at Squire Walk er's office, one of the constables, Clifford, sn officer of the court, was standing near the Squire in a state ofstupiSed drunkenness. Suddenly the dignity of the court was shock ed, and the audience nearly astonished out of their boots, 'by a tremendous crash. It was discovered that the constable, who had been endeavoring , to perform the feat of going to aleep standing on his feet, had tum bled down without preliminary notice, '. and with a good deal of similarity in sound, to that of a small house falling! ' ' For tuch ' officers are we indebted to our Old Liner friends. If they are determined to give all tbe city efficee to the foreign born, we have certainly the right to ask and expect of them, they will select good and capable foreigners to govern us. -V . Matrimosial. We have had occasion du ring the lat winter season to notice an un usually large number of marriages. Many loviog and Ioveable couples havo sworn al legiance on the holy altar where Cupid reigns. In fact, the marrying mania ran ao high, that bachelordom waa threatened with desolation. The few faithful soldiers of the cross that remained, have been most ungratefully maligned by their recreant former associates: those luckless wights who have been captivated and eaptored by ringlets, flounces and Scotch-work. After all this marrying and giving in marriage, fretting and frothing, coquetting and calumniating of their old bachelor friends, who have remain ed firm and atood up for the right 1 what have our renegade frienda gained!. What has society gsined by their apostaty and infidelity! Why, just let them look at thereport of our late Circuit Coort, and they will tee to their burning and everlasting disgrace, there were more divorces granted at this one term, than there will be marriages in a whole year and the partiea were restored, as near as could be, to their primeval state cf innocence by the hand of impartial justice. Is fifty Inches tbick, and will without doubt f very productive of, coal-we hope ahd üeve equally profitable to the miners and oe be the company. At the ' depth of fifty feet there is a vein not so thick as the one last described, but we were informed by the genetal eupreintendent that in his opinion it could be profitably worked. S It is admitted on all hands' that the specimens which have been brought up are of a most excellent quality and far; superior to any coal broght to this town except thst from Pittsburgh. How important tbe success of this rvork is to all classes especially to those in limited circumstances, it ia unnecessary for us to say and we congratulate ourselves and the people of Henderson on the propitious, circumstances under which it is carried on. IMext to the building. of the Henderson and Nashville railroad, we regard the opening of our coal strata as the most im porta at, the most valuable, and the most necessary public improvement in which our citizens can be engaged. It is a work which literally comes- home to men's ' firesides which makes comfort cheap. Neither can our city be advanced to any degree, either in , wealth or population, without the introduction of manufacturing eatablishments, .and these we cannot have without a plentiful supply of coal. The success of our Evansvilfo neighbors has demonstrated the practicability of the work to all minds, but we are informed that the Henderson . Company had prosecuted their work with the utmost zeal and confidence before that event occurred. The boring is carried on by steam, and the work is rapid and effective. .. f Henderson Cour. Wabash and Erie Caval. Business ' on the Wabash and Erie Canal has been very active since the opening of navigation. The arrivals snd departures of bonts for the first week, were one hundred and eleven, against seventy-seven for the previous eeaeon.
