She is now runaiog regularly in this trade, and as she has the best accommodations, and is of remarable speed, she ought to do well. The LouisTille Courier of Tbursdsy says: The river was falling slowly yesterday with six feet six inches water In the csnal by the mark. During the previous twentyfour haurs, the rirer bad receded two ioches. The fine low pressure steamer Southerner Is the pscket for St. Louis to-day. Itjsunnecesssary to sdvise.trsylers going to that pert or intermediate port to take her as they will doit anyhow. The fast Crystal Palace will be down to-morrow for St. Louis. Capt. Kountzwtll put paseengen through in quick time, and gure them good accommodations. -The Sultana arrived here yeiterday afternoon frem New Orleans, with a fair freight and a reasonable number 'of passengers. She waa seven dsys from New Orleans., The Sultana put out 80 tons of freight here, principally groceries. We think her first clerk for papers, The Switzerland srrived here yesterday frorj Cincinnati, in a half wrecked condition to outward appearance. Just below Cloverport, night before last, she was struck by a sudden squall of wind, and in a second her chimneys were knocked down and much broken. Her cabin was careened over, and considerably injured. She remained here yesterday making repairs. There was of course great alarm for the moment, but nobody was injured, and the wind pasted away quick as it had come. The old Evsnsville and Louisville packet Fawn msde her appearance once more at our wharf yesterday. She hss been sold, sod wss loaded for Nashville. We hope to see her often for the good she has done, snd for her old time popularity. The fast and !egant steamer RainKn will K 0rm th!a i.ninir from T.nri!a ville, and after making a brief call at Henderson, will forthwith return to Louisville. Those bound up the river will of course take her, as she has clever officers and good ac commodations, and is very fsst. Hsynes flatbost, from Wabash river, with a large and valuable cargo, struck a snag last week below Bayou Sara, and sunk. The Laodis arrived it New Orleans on the 12tb, with 486 casks, tierces and barrels of pork, beef and lard, from the wreck. Froceedicgs of the City Council. , Mosday Etebikq, April 16th 1855. Council met puisuant to adjournment. Pres ent the Major and Councilman Steele, Scanilin, Stephens, Elliott, Roquet, Kratz, Pushee, Honnel and Mentzcr. ' Ordered, that a precept be issaed against 201 feet front of Evan Homestead oa Locust street, for the tum of SSI 47, that being the expense oi Graveling In front of said 291 feet belonging to the heirs of R. M. Evans deceased, and called the Evans Homestead. On motion the Council allowed bill of P. II. Woodard former City Engineer, for I quarter's salary ending April 1st 1855, amounting to 225. Thomas Bacon presented his official bond as City School Treasurer, for $8000 conditioned according to law with Lewi Howes and John Bunis as securities thereon, whith was approved andordeied to be filed with the City Clerk. Orden d, that Theodore Deistch be allow the sum of 33 for publishing election notice, as per bill filed. Messrs. Woolsey &. Nelson presented a petition asking- the privilege ot constructing a plank shed 10 feet high and 37 feet deep adjoining the old Court House, the same to be used as a ware too in. Councilman Mentzcr mo Ted, seconded by Councilman Kratz to lay the petition on the tactile, which motion was lost. . On motion of Councilman Hunnel seconded 3y Councilman Scanilin the petition was grant. d by the following vote. Ayes, Councilman 3keele, Scanilin, Stephens, Elliott, Hedderich, Pusb.ee, and Hunnell 7; Noes Krön, Kratz, and Mentzcr-3. . Couciltaan Elliott, Chairman of the Committee on procuring suitable rocms lor the holding -of ths meetings of the Council, made the following verbal report "That the old Clerk and Auditor's offices could be had at 200 per year, and Hhat Mr. Linen's 2 upper rooms could be had for $110 per year. Report received and Committee discharged. On motion the Mayor was directed to engage the Clerk and Auditor's offices at the terms stated. On motion it was ordered that a cash order "be drr wn in favor of John Preweit for the sum ot S2G2 50 being the amount of principal and interest of money loaned the City of Evsnsville, .payable on the 17th of October 1855. ; On motion the following order was received from the Neptune Fire Company. 5300.00. EviNsrtLLC, April 17 1835. Pay to the order ot John S. Ordered, that a cash order be made unto Allen C. Ilallock, treasurer of Neptune Fire Ca, on the city treasurer, f arable on the 17th day of October, 1856, and bearing 10 percent. Interest from date, lor th sum ot S300. Bat it Is expressly understood and agreed that should the Common Council of the city of Eraniville make an appropriation out of the levy ot 1656 towards the purchase of Fire Engines and Apparatus lor the Fire Companies, then and in that case this order shall be cancelled, and the amount of money

therein specified, be taken and considered as part payment for said Fire Engines and Apparatus. Oa motion, the Mayor, was directed to settle with John Ward, late City Marshal, when the proper vouchtes shall appear. The committee appointed to consult the barbers of the city in relation to closing their shops at 9 o'clock A. M. on Sunday mornings, reported that they had consulted with a number of the proftui acd found them generally opposed to sach closing. The report was receptee! and the eommitte discharged. The Mayor, as chairman of the committee on sewer on Mulberry street, submitted the estimate ol surveyor Saunders, the same amounting to SI 11,09, and on motion the estimate was adopted, and the Mayor and councilman Steele were directed to contract lor the construction ot said sewer. Ordered, that a ehash order be issued in favcr of Soren Sorenson, City Treasurer, for $3,561 47 that being for interest, commissions and exchange for the May instalment on the City Bonds in the E. and C. Railroad. On motion the Mayor was directed to have the three lower rooms in the Sei ton's House in Oak Hill Cemetery repaired. On motion of Councilmen Hunnel, Seconded by Councilman Kron, it was ordered that the market stalls outside of the market house be started at $2 00 each, at the annual sale by the Market Master. On motion the Mayor and Market Master were directed to procure suitable scales and measures tor the ue of the Market House. On Motion it was ordered that the owners of lots Nov 13; H, 15, 16, 17, 18,19, and 20, in Bldck 33, Eastern enlargement, cause the side walk thereof, in front, to be filled up so as to correspond with the City grade, in ten days after the publication ot this order, and in default thereof the Superintendent of Streets perform said work, and the cost and expenses accruing thereby will be collected from ihe sale of said lots in the usual manner. The Mayor suggested the porpriety of appointing a committee to consult Messrs Bray, Jones and Bell, in regard to purchasing their wbarl the same being for disposal. On motion the Mayor, Councilman Stephens, Elliott and Mentzer; were appointed to ascer. tain the probable cost of said wharf, and report accordingly. Council Adjourned. WELL. H. WALKEft. City Clerk.
