.". American Interest Free Trade. - One of the cardinal points in the platform of the newly organized American party, as promulgated in New York, and Virginia, is 'the encouragement andYostering of American manufactures, and American productions of every description peculiar to our resources and necessary to our wants. That this is

now and ever has been the only correct, po

litic and independent doctrine, with regard to the domestic economy and prosperity of this country, is a proposition which for nearly a half century has remained tincontroverted, thoagh often attacked by its most powerful

--and ingeniua adversaries. The hUtory of those protective and salutary measures which hare from one period to another been adopted by our government, although perhaps in themseleves imperfect in their mechanical formation and practical bearings, furnish bundant proof and justification of th? entire soundness of the principle in which those measures had their origin. The protection of American industry, by ju Jicious restrictions . upon the productions of foreign competing nations, is a principle in our " government ds Indefeasible as the laws of -self defence or

self-preservation. Upon this principle de

..As soon: as Mr. Wilson heard this, he, in company with Mr. Loveland, went, loi-the house of Mr. Fisher, where thev ascertained

that some ttmein September last, this Jfab-i

the father, mother and five children. They

were a very poor family tnat had been living

n the neighborhood six or seven years, and

were well known by the neishbors. During

last summer, the old man French had raispd a small patch of corn and come garden stuff, the whole of which, together with the furni

ture, was not worth over fifty dollars. Some

time in October, Mr. Lewi?, a near neighbor,

went to the cabin of I rench to purchase his

corn, lie was met at tne lence in iront ot the cabin by the Hubbard, and was told, that.the night before, Mr. French's brother had. come along with'a,wa2oti, and had taken Mr. French's wholo family away with him,

and had, started for . Illjnoi?, and that they, had purchased all their ihinjrs including the

corn, garden and furniture. A day or two af

terwards, Mr. bteaines Usher went over to

enquire if the Prenrhg needed any a?istance and was met in the same way by the IJubbardf, and was told the same ftory. ', No, suipicions were, entertained at the time thit foul play had been used, and nothing occurred until after' the body of Boyles had been found and the Hubbard's were arrested. It then began to be thought these monsters hod murdered the whole, .family. On 'hearing these statements Mr. Wilson determined to go and search the premises. He then 'went 'own to Gardiner's work and

procured ä shovel and pick and tried to get

someone to go with him. No one, however, believed the story, and so no one volunteered' to go. While thry were talking Mr,

Thomas came, up and he and Mr. Wilaon

proceeded to Hubbard's and found the door

locked. They drew the staple with the pick,

nnd entered the house. They found the floor raised, and soma dirt removed. Mr.

Miles Morgan, constable, had been there a

short time previous searching, and had discovered a piece of skull bone and had gone

away. They then proceeded to dig away the

Tlie i:ilit View of It. The State Journal of last Friday thus speaks of the American ' Railroad article in

reference to the E. I. &. C. Straight L'ne Railroad. It copies Hon. O, II. Ömith's reply

with this.introductory: , r ', . . .

OCT From some cause the Railroad Journal has conceived a dislike to the Indianapo

lis, Cleveland and Evansville Straight Line Railroad, and its President O. II. Smith, Esq.

and has recently been exhibiting it in a

series cf nttacks. remarkable principally .for

malignity and mistakes, upon both. As our city is no little interested in the succes's'pf a line which will open tooa the South-western portion ot the State, hitherto a sort öf terra iiicognita'rictiin mincial resources and agricultural productions, but inaccessible, we give- below the refutation published by Mr. Smith 'cf sorne' of the charges preferred by the Journal. The assault upon bis, character needs no remark. A' long life of honorable exertion is the best ' answer to 'unsupported charges of dishonesty and deceit.. . .
