DTAILY JOURNAL. Local and River Brevities. FflE- Seoaes. The finest flavored ?gr we have smoked in many a day, can be found it Cook'i Family Grocery ihe pure
Puerto Principe. Call acd try them, ye puffen of the "vile weed!" If you will use it, goto Cook' and get the best kind. New Pr os .We would invite attention to lorae fine new pianos at the store of T. Conyngton fc Co. They are probably the finest instruments ever brought to this city. Let our lady performers cat! in and try them, and if they can't get sweet music out of those instruments, it is their own fault. A full supply will be kept on hand hereafter. . ltlVEll IXEJ1S. 81x110 or ths A.L.Shotweli The team erWm. Garvin, which arrived here )csierday morning from the Tennessee fiver, reported the Steamboat A. L. Shotwetl sunk at "The Sister," a few miles above Southland in the Ohio. The Shot well is reported to have struck a bar with her low with great violence, an J her stern swinging around struck the shore leaving her middle in deep water. The Garvin ran along-side and took off some ot her passengers and offered to render assistance. Capt Elliott stated to the Cipuof the Garvin that noasistance would save lit boat. that she was fat making water in her holdand being suspended at both ends must in evitably break in two. She is heavily freighted and her cargo is valuable, most of which will probably be saved though the boat will be a total los. Several citizens of Evansville were passengers on board. The J. M. Stock well will not te able to go up the Wabath with her load in consequence of scarcity of water. The river at Vincennes is reported only 18 inches above low water mark. The Rainbow did not get down till Sunday being delayed on her up trip by fog two nights. She came down with a good trip and returned Sunday evening. Her officers have our thanks .lor up river favors. ' The John M. Stockwell arrived here earlj yesterday morning from New Orleans. She had on board a considerable freight for this place aid 'abont 300 tons lor the Wabash, ftbe made the trip up in about 8 days. Charley Churchill her polite cle k has our thanks for late New Orleans Ipapeis. The S. reports freights very scarce below. The fast and excellent Louisville and Sl Louis packet Crystal Palace was here last Sun"day morning for St, Louis with a large crowd of - passengers. She is now carrying passengers ifom Ibis city to Louisville tor only two dollars! This reduction, with her fine accommodations, should make her popular with Evansville people. We thank her officers for late papers. f 'Steamer Evansville Sunk. The steamer - 'Evansville struck a snag in bat king out from a landing inSchenaul Reach just below Flint Island ndSunk in a short time. Her stern lies "in about twelve lett water. The Capr, of the w. A. Eaves, down yesteWay morning, was of the opinion that she couKl bo raised witb'out much difficult in cae that the river did not .rise. She was freighted tor Memphis and "White river, havlog recently, beta sold lor that trade-. There was said to be no insurencc on the boat, which we think improbable. According to the New Orleans Delta it is . now a settled fact tbat'there is soon to be a daily line of splendid boats between New Orleans and ' Cairo, carrying th United States mail. They - will come into order on or about the 15th of April: Captain Reo, of St. Louis, and the Louisville, fct. Lbuis and Cincinnati Mail Company, have received the contract from the Post Office Depart . ment. .The boats are to make regular time, and aöt to carry over 150 tons. It Ol ICK.
