Yesterday the river was receding rapidly, with about nineteen feet wattr in the channel hence to Louisville; the weather clear but very wiiu.y and blmterin. The river was exceedingly rough while the dut on the landin? and streets filled the ait, rendering it very di3?reeaIe to those having out-door business to transact. Above the tributaries are all falling rapiily, while the Ohio, iroin Pittsburgh to Louisville, is receding at the rate ol an inch and a half an hour. The river was tailing pretty fast yester. day, but si ill very high. "Weather milder and Tery windy. . The Floating Palace, in tow of the fleamer Jas! Ray nun J, äx rived here Saturday night. The Wheat Crop. The Messenger, published at Hannibal, Missouri, learns from 'farmers that the prospects for good wheat 'crop throughout northern Missouri are more 'promising than they hare been for some years past. In Illinois the prospects for an abundant wheat crop are alio good. We learn from the Alton Courier, the editor of which paper has recently made a trip across the central portion of Illinois, that,"however -short the crops might have been last year, it has not deterred the farmers of the State from seizing every portion of favorable time during the fall for sowing their wheat, and the result shows ta't there are at least twenty per cent, more acres now In wheat than in any previous year. The winter has been exceedingly VrtoraVleV and if we should be blessed with our ordinary spring, Illinois will have an amount of wealty in that single crop which it would be difficult to estimate." (0 The Cleveland Leader states, thtt on the 17th instant, a gentleman named Field, vi robbed at Dunkirk of Si ,400, by a barber named Jas. Hall, who, while shaving Mr. Field, administered ' cM'Toform to him, and thus effected his purpose. The scoundrel fled to Cleveland where he gave his name as "Jerry Kyan. lie was said to ve notorious as k thief along the Ohio River, and was thought to be making his wny in this, direc lion. He is described as a tnulatto with i i peculiar crait, about five feet 10 inches in liciuht, hijjh forehead, very short, curly hair, large flat nose, large mouth, a bare spot on the back of the head, and pimples on bis .face and foreStead. H3" William H. -Divis, a tragedian in Etmyra, N. Y. while ploying opon the stage in hanging execution scene at that place, c mo near dying in earner instead oifun. The Elmyra Advertiser of the'13'.h thua states the ease, and oulit to be a warning to "actors.. It fays: The rope was adjusted, at the given signal tha dr jp. fell, and unfortunately for Mr. D. the invisible protection j;ave way, leaving him huog, not only in sham but in reality. As his struggles were only in keeping with the character, neither the audience nor the ret,of the company of course were aware of his (earful and perilous condition. In a few moments the curtain was lowered, and the actor at once withdrew to their dressing rooms, anconcious that one of their Dumber was'hot'only unable to help himself, b 'i iying;'anj had it not been for the timely ap pet ranee of a little girl belonging to the ct mpany, who discovered him a tew moments after, he must have soon breathed his last. On seeing, lüm still hanging, as in the play, with the blood starting from his mouth and nostrils, she gave the alarm, tie was 111-etantly-cut down, and to all appearances, dead.' Medical at J was immediately procured and after son;e fifteen or twenty minutes he was again restored to life, but not to conciousn ess .and rationality for several hours. I. Mississippi asd "Sam."
