RcpcrtcJ expressly for the Daily Journal. AUUIVAL OF THE AFRICA. lilt; li ly i out ant! EMPEROR OF RUSSIA DEAD! HEWS PROM TUB CRIMEA. Halifax, March 15. The A frica has arrived. Her news ia important. The Emperor of Russia is dead. He ex pired suddenly en the morning of Friday, March 2d, at 1 o'clock. The event creates the greatest excitement, but no details are received. It was announced on Friday night in the House of Lords by Lord Clarendon, and in the House of Commons by Lord Palmerston. Surmises were afloat that he was assassin ated, but it is thought he died uf apoplexy after an attack of influenza. His illness was known in England before the news of his death was received, and caused a slight rise in funds. The effect of his death had not transpired when the Africa left Liverpool. Viehha. The peace conference was to open on the 5th inst, and peace expecta tions were daily growing stronger. There are no news, from the seat of war of the least importance. LtveRFooL. White corn 42ja43s, yellow 42a 42s, mixed 42s. dales of Friday show a better feeling. Richardson. Sperne & Co. report provi siona generally unchanged, except bacon. Accounts from Manchester are more fa vorable. The Africa left Liverpool at 10 o'clock on the morning of the 5th, and arrived on the 14th, at 1,P. M. War advices from Crimea are of the same tenor. Nothing of moment has occurred. On the 13th, the Russians made a sortie during the night, but were not formidable; they killed five French. By another sortie on the night of the 14th the French lost 15 men. On the 15th, the condition of the French was reported excellent. There was a rumor that the North side of Sebastopol will be invaded. Admiral Bruat telegraphs the following, dated Kamibh Bay: "On the 17th Eupatoria was attacked from the Eastern side by 80 pieces of artillery, six regiments of caval ry under General KorfT, and twelve regi ments of infantry, consisting of about 25,000 men, under Osten Sacken. The combat lasted from l until 10 o'clock in the morn ing, when the Russians were repulsed with with a loss estimated at 600 killed, and wounded in proportion. The Turks had 83 killed, 250 wounded, and lost 80 horses. Selim Pacba and a Russian colonel were killed. Eighteen French were killed on shipboard. The attack was not renewed by the Russians. The steamers anchored at a short distance, and contributed energetically to defend the town. Admirals Lyons and Bruat sent 6 steamers io Eupatoria." A second dispatch, dated Eopatoria 2 Ist, says: "Since the afiatr of the 91st the Rus. sians have not made 4 by new attack npon Eupatoria. To-day, columns of infantry and tram waggon were seen .leaving tho town, taking the direction of Simferopol. Many villages are seen in flames In -the neighborhood of Eupatoria'." ' More guns have been landed and addition al fortresses thrown up. The town is in a good state of defence. A letter states that the'ba'ttlS consisted mainly of a heavy fire of artillery, under cover of which the Russians were repulsed. New Orleans, Mar. 15 Savannah and Charleston maild, as late as due, have been received. The Charleston Courier gives' additional details of the destruction by fire, in the woods in South Carolina and Georgia. Many bouses, mills and other property had been J... t i i aesiroyea. un several railroads cotton trains had. been burnt, while plantations, with all their buildings, in some instances, had been swept away. 'Turpentine distilleries also suffered near Cheraw 300,000 turpentine boxes were burned. The Charleston military had been called out to settle difficulties on the Northern rail

road. Thiry rioters were arrested and com

mitted to jail. Washikgtox. Mar. 15. Late Mexican advices report the people leaving the Capitol, and numerous failures among traders in that country. Gen Quitman has gone to NewOrleans via Montgomery Ala., where he intends to stop a few days. CoacoBD, Mar. 15. 189 towns heard from. Metcalf 29,777, Baker 23,760, Bell 1,882 and Fowler 1015, 39 yet to be heard from.. Tbertojt, March 15. The South Jersey Sentinel says the air line bill passed the House by a vote of 31 to 21. Concord, March 15. Returns from 205 towns give Metcalf 31,735, Baker 25,584. Bell 3,206, Fowler 1,164. The twenty towns and voting places to hear from will probably reduce Metcalf' majority to 1,500. Wihchesteb, Va.. March 14. The Know Nothings have nominated Stanhope Flourney of Halifax co. for Govvernor of Virginia, and Hon. J. N. Beale, of Mason, for Lieut. Governor, and John M. Pattern, of Richmond, for Attorney General. They all accept. Election lteturnt.DItaitert. Cohcord, N. H., Mar. 14. The Democrats here give up the election. Metcalf is probably elected by 3,000 majori ty. Three administration members of Con gress are certainly elected. Letters from Meredith give awful accounts of the disaster which occurred yesterday. Jas. W. Dargin, Geo. Clark, Nathan Nichols, S. M. Tuck and John O. M. Ladd have died of their injuries. Many other are not expected to recover. Over 100 persons h ad their bones broken.
