Weekly Journal. .. CITY OF EVANSVILLü Circular. Pwatera We are now turning t-eaut Job Office, and are prepared promptly, neatly and at rea-onable prices. Specimens of all kinds of w ork can be seen at offiee. "WV haean elegant ruling machine in connection with office, and arc prepared to do Blaatt Job Woik of all descript ions. A Base Appeal. Tbe State Sentinel either jrreatly mis takes the character of the Republican mem bers of the Legislature, or else these gentle men are fit instruments indeed to be handled by such a tool of party as "the man who shook his bead. Last Saturday's Sentinel contains an appeal to those Republican members who were originally Democrats but who forsook their party, or rather their party leadera in their gross inconsistency left them to break up the Republican party, so far as lies in their power, by refusing to compromise with Republicans of Whig origin on the Senatorial question. That -il, to nominate a Democrat for Senator, and make the great majority of Republican members who were formerly Whigs, yield up their prefer- ' ence, or pre?ent an election. The Sentinel says this has been done in other States, and should be done here. A more bare-faced and brozen appeal has never been made to t set of decent mi'n. and if for a moment it can pn duce anj other feelings than disgust in the breasts of Republicans, no matter what their former party preferences, they are recreants thus far to the trusta reposed in them by a confiding constituency. - Tbe object uf the appeal is plain. It is - to produce dissentions among the Republicans, and thus by breaking their harmony and unity of action, to make the.r majority power'esa against an united minority of Old Line Democracy. The trick Is shallow aa it is contemptible, and should only serve to make Republicans more guarded in doing anything to give their wiley and unscrupu lous enemies an advantage. These very Republicans now spoken so sweetly toby the Sentinel.and advised so affectionately and disinterestedly as to their policy ,are the very men whom tbe Sentinel andv kindred Old Line abeeta have been for months and months stigmatizing aa traitors, office-hunters and political scoundrels. Failing to wh-p them back into the Old Line ranks.the Sentinel is now endeavoring to coax them to turn their hands against their brethren of the Reform party. And yet there stand the Chapmans, with their names at the head of "The Republican, and the nonvnees for an Important office by the Republican party and thus bound by common decency to de fend its interests and no a word from them in repaid tJ all such disgusting and continu al rff'Ms of the opposition to injure the Re publican party. We hope Republican mem bcrs ill kefp their eyes on the Sentinel and on the Republican. Both papers are prac ticing labored deception to hoodwink them and if the impudence of the one, or the cunningnesscf the other, secure any success in distracting the Republicans, they will de serve the defeat of all their plans, and itu ridicule of a Defrayed constituency. At his old I'lrtjr Trick. The Republican alludes to an article in a late number of the Eransrille Journal, an) says: It ia enough to say of it, that we have good reason to know that it was written by Gugg who of course will introduce it into his own naperwith a nuffof its "excellent atvle, antf as another evidence of "public sentiment. In the next paragraph the writer imputes an article in the Vincennra Gazette to Mr Gregg. We will not insult the in'tlligtnct of Chapman, by saying he believes any such nonsense r be puts forth for truth in the above, but A? insults both the intelligence and decency of his renders, by a low, dirty trick founded upon a palpable falsehood. Chap man knew he was telling a miserable false hood, when he said he had "good reason to know one of our articles wa written bv Gregg. It was a mere dirty trick, to make members of the Legislature believe that no Republican editors are opposed to the Chapmans, but Gregg is responsible for all the tenement opposition in the Republican party to tbe election of the Chapmans State Printer. We are glad to see that the shal low trick has been exposed, for Mr. Gregg, happily being at the Capital, at once published a card in the State Journal, disclaiming the authorship of articles appearing in any paper but bis own, except those signed by bis name. The man capable of such sneaking and contemptible tricks as this, founded fur success upon falsehood, is claim ing the office of State Printe from the hands of the Republican members of the Legisla ture,at the same time the falsehood and trick were intended to deceive nobody but themselves! Kick him out of the nomination, and give him some cause for returning operüg to those he is now secretly aiding and abetting. The Republican party can do better without tbe aid of auch office-seeking backs as J. P. Chapman. fO" The Evansville Journal of the 13th talka sensibly. Jnd. llep. Drew stated lately in the Sen ate that there were one hundred and fifty vineyards in his district!! And that was one eason, or rather one hundred and fifty reasons why he could not vote for the temper ance bill! Now the gallant Colonel has probably made k miatake of just about one hundred in his calculation of the number of vineyards in hia district, and even If his enire Statement were true, it ia no reason why he ahould have voted against the bill simply because the manufacture and rale of native wine is not prohibited, excepting in the reail style in which the Colonel has been dis posing of it and strong liquors to his cus tomers. The printing press, trie cider press. and the wine press, are all free aa ever, Col. D., except under proper tnd wise restric tions. Fuxsr The different positions assumed by the Old Line organs on the tempt ranee law. Some approve it. Others deny all connection between it and the Old Line par ty. Others again straddle the fence, first threatening to pitch on one side, then on the other trying to piek flaws in it one mo ment, then swearing it is pretty good the next doubting its constitutionality, then doubting their, own judgments. They see their leading organ against it, and their pre cious Governor and other leaders for it. Heretofore on other questions their little edi tors have had their leaders take them by the nose and lead them into the one airtight way but now' they havn't noses enough for the hands grabbing at them. They can't follow their noses, because one set of leaders is pulling at them one way, and another 'i rectly opposite. What will the poor politi cal cripples do! Tri. Weekly Jaurnai. By accident, tbe Try-Weekly Journal of yesterday ran short, and we were compelled to disappoint a good many subscribers abroad. The Tri-Weekly should be in the hands of evrry business man in the towns of this re gion. It contains telegraph dispatches of markets and news from the prominent cities of the counfy, home markets, river news, and in fact every item of reading matter that is published in the Daily. It is promptly mailed early every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning, well enve'oped. Price $4 per annum, payable in advance. It is an invaluable paper to business tuen in the country towns connected by mail with Ev ansville. Horrible Sulcldel We learn from Mr. Hill, mail agent, that a horrible suicide occurred at the German masked ball at Terre Haute, yesterday morn ing about 4 o'clock. A German draftsman employed on the Alton railroad, of excellent character an high reputation as a workman, had some difficulty in a love aflairas it was supposed, and during the progress of the ball, remarked to a friend that be was going to kill himself. About 4 o'clock, he pulled a pistol out of his pocket, placed the muzzle to his mouth, and pulled the trigger. The pis tol exploded, and the ball lodged in the back part of hia head. He was alive when the cars left, lut of course fatally wounded. We did not learn his name. Surgical Opehatios. We learn 'hat our old fri-nd Mr. Caddington, formerly of the Vincennes Gazette, had one of his legs am putated last week. He was under the influ ence of chloroform at the time, and the operation was performed successfully and without a particle of pain to himself. He haa been for many year suffering horribly with a diseased limb, and resorted to amputation as the last hope. We wish him a speedy recovery. t . Witches. Jewelet, &c, at Auctiok. Messrs. We clip the following from a New York paper: A Lunatic has been cutting some singular pranks at the expense of the merch-nta. Mr. J.,hn P. BeauviMe.a French importing merchant, who for the past three weeks has been fflicted with partial derangement of the mind, yesterday called at the store in Grand street, and stated that he wanted to purchase the goods then in the store forshipment to the West Indies. His manner and conversation were such as to excite euspicion of his being mentally deranged, and upon inquiry, it was four:d that he had made bills with d fferent firms to the sum of 8172.471. At each place he represented that he wished the goods got ready for shipment on Saturday next, and in consequence of this, many of the merchants whose stock he has bought out were up with their clerks all of Wednesday ni?ht, getting the goods packed, and others who were not aware of his lunacy were probably similarly engaged last night. Among the articles purchased by Sir. B "are $1,200 worth of hobby-horses, all of which the unfortunate seller supposed would shortly be on their way to the West Indies." A Severe Drought is ,the Midst or Whiter. The Cincinnati Gazette says: At a meeting of German and European born coffee-house keepers, on Sunday afternoon, at Frlman Hall, it was agreed, with some objections, that on to-morrow evening a procession of two thousand German resi" denls should quietly be made to the city council requesting such a modification.of the Sunday law as will permit ihe sale, on that day, of iheir favorite drink uf beer. Why ia it that this crusade is being made against all new roads Is it because they are le-a secure, than the old One, whose bonds Wall ttreet and their or gan are holding up to the public as v crtfi less of their confidence and tegard. Can this poa ilion be maintained! Bonds of old roads that have failed to meet the expections of their stockhoders, and whose stocks, are largely below par. as the Erie, the Hudson and 01 tiers, are pressed upon the market by the Wali street br:kers, and capitalists are induced to take them, at prices much h'gher than they could now make investments in the best lines ol new roads being built in the United St tie?, that cannot fail t pay. The great error into which capitalists, both in Europe and America, who n uke investments in the Valley of the Mississippi, as well as east of the AUeghanies, cous-sts in two faces, the first is ihey do not examine tor them selves the road they patromz, with reliable information before them, so as Ij enable them to discriminate between t-uch roads as will pay, and such as will not; and the second is, ihey throw themselves in Wall street tu Luy the securities they need, instead of applying at head quarters to the companies and receiving the bonds at figures that would give trie purchasers the Wall etreetcommissi- ns, it is plain to see that it is very immaterial to the company selling ' bonds as to who receives the commission, the broker or the purchaser of the bonds. If this idea could he infused into the minds of purchasers of bonds, it would largely operate upon the bulls and bears of Wall street, and go very far to warm the water that is now being thrown cold upon new railroad enterprises in the West, by placing all upon the true platform uf intrinsic merit. The ritcr knows that there are railroads in the Valley of the Mississippi, now being constructed, that will compare lavorably with any railroads in the United States in operation, among others he would name the Ohio and Mississippi, running fioin Cincinnati to St. Louis, a road hat maybe retarded, but can never be finally arrested by any state of times. The Evansville, Indianapolis and Cleveland Straight Line a road being built from Indianapolis, the capital ol the S'ate of Indiana, to Evansville on the Ohio River, this road is the Southern extension ot the Ed stern lines, from Indianapolis down the great agricultural and mineral Valley of White River, tapping the Ohio River at Evansville, two hundred miles below Luuisville and is intended to be a link in the great chain of railway from Lake Erie, by Indianapolis, Evansville, Henderson, Smiihland, Pnducah, and Memphis, to New Or leans, by a d rect, and the shortest practide route between the North and the South in the Valley of the Mississippi. These lines will no doubt be built, and it is hard, to say the least, tht the enterprising men who are engaged in building them should have to struggle not only with the times, but with the most puwerlul monetary comd.na fon in the world. The chuff has ben blown away by the money pressure, and the roads now progressing in the Valley are tuch only as are demanded by the people, and when constructed will add largely to the business of the roads in operation, in which the very men who are now opposing the new works, are so much interest' d.
