FRIDAY MORNING :::::::::::::DEC22. rir. abVourire. at boeFti Nrp-! tune t'mpiir ! The reaeers of our telegraph dispatches must have te?n atonihd at the ere t number cf fires which hate occuned i t , Eastern cities within the last week. Yeslerday. we published dispatches of a fire at NewjYork, following the great one at PhilaJclplua. At the New York fire not only were some splendid houses destroyed, but five ; or six men were kilted, and several ladies erasing. Five firemen were killed while in the gallant performance of their duty. Spaaking cf these fires, reminds us that our own city is very deficient in protection gainst this terrible danger, threatening us every moment, and which may .overwhelm us when least really expecting it. We. hive but two engines in the city, and they are but apologies for engines at the best. With such apparatus, it is a wonder that any or ganization has been kept up at all of late years. Firemen, to be active, efficient and spirited, should have fire apparatus in which they can take a proper pride, both in preserving and working. Two good engines with the proper hose accompaniments, and two strong companies to use them, would be enough (or the present protection of our city. There would be that spirited emulation or rivalry, which might accomplish wonders in times of danger. Of course, we can get but one at a time. We are glad to perceive that the Neptune Company are now in the field, and intend next Thursday evening, to make another public appeal to the liberality of our citizens in aid of their enterprise of procuring a new machine. They will give a Festival next Thürsday evening, for particulars of which, see advertisement. They are determined this time, to be economical in all their arrangeme its, while at the same time they will have splendid entertainment in every particular. We shall have more to say on this subject before the Levee is held. In the mean time we wish citizens to reflect upon the urgent necessity of an improvement in our fire department, and be prepared to exhibit a proper liberality next Thursday evening. Additional Inducements. We have alluded in another article to the firemen's levee or festival to be given next Thursday, the 28th inst. It will be held at Crescent Hall, by far the finest and largest hall in the city. The managers are making extensive and splendid arrangements, and it will undoubtedly be the finest thing of the kind ever given in Evansville. An excel lent band o. music has been engaged, and one of the best caterers in the Slate will provide the supper. We would hete say to those abroad who wiah to attend this festival, that there will be a deduction of 25 per cent, on the railroad fare, to those who rome by that route to attend the levee. Those who purchase a ticket, will be entitled to one hare in Winter's splendid $200 painting. Look out for your tickets, and purchase lib erally. leather Singular. We learn from a friend, that an old gen tleman aged sixty Ave years, was married a few days ago, iu Knox county, this State, to his sixth wife, and he has only marriedce women! His first wife is his last wife, and he is now in her forty-fifth year. She .has been married three times, and her first bus band is 'ier last husband. We hope they have now met to part no more. Success to the Cupuddles, and ay the big ponds soon be surrounded by Uvle puddles! trnarr-bat Sunk. We learn that T. J. Wood & Co.'s large Wharf-boat was sunk at Cairo several days go, and the water is over its lower deck - It is presumed the accident occurred from overloading. Among other freight on her were 4000 sacks salt. The whatf boat was very large one, being the hull aud cabin of the Patrick Henry, and last summer was en a, a a a tirelv repaired and renovated, we are sorar ry to hear of her sinking, as her principa proprietor we know to be a first rate man ftodbe was doing a good business. (örThe merchants of Pittsburgh close (heir stores at 7 o'clock in the evening, so as Co allow their clerks a few hours formenta improvement and social intercourse. Why cannot this rule be adopted in Evansville! If the closing is general, there will be no loss to any one therefrom,' and while the merchant will reduce his expenses for light the clerk will have his very arduous labors lightened. 0"The Crimea correspondent of the London Times says, the Russians are a cowardly set, taking every mean advantage they can. It appears to us the? have taken a good many advantages over their antagonists lately, and very alarming' ones too whether mean or not. We do not think the allies should charge cowardica oa the part of Russians, in the present condition of things about Sebastopol. (Ö-Three thousand eight hundred head of hogs were packed in OIney last week, by Hessrs. A.L. &R.Byers, H. Gunn &Sons, nd Wm. Newell.
(7- The Evansville Journal is .trying to convince the public that the Ohio river is a humbug, and that it's cheaper to ship freight via Railroad. - Certainly it s a humbug a great stumbling block in the way of the pros-
pent? of our sister city. Crowd business on r 0 the railroad, gentlemen make it rich enough to chalk editors' hats. Yin. Gazvtie. " e are tryiny to crowd ., ,. business on ihe understand that the remarka lQ wn;ch the Gazette alludes, have called attention to the advantages of the road at the preseat time for receiving freights frorn Cincinnati. The Ohio is not much to bragg of just at this time, but we think if the editor of the Gazette could tep down here at,out "next rise," end see a dozen big boa'.a at the wharf loading and discharging freight, passengers running to and (ro, drays rattling, anj ,11 the noise and confusion of a little ew York, he would come to the conclusion that if the Ohio is a humbug, it is a tremen dous one. It is one of those humbugs which make;the fortunes of those who receive their advantages. It is rumored that A. B. A rcher, the fellow who, from n ultra Whig, suddenly changed to a rabid Democrat, and was rewarded with a petty mail agency, is abo-1 starting an Archer paper at Cannelton, Indiana. Cin. Columb. Archer is a very clever fellow, but we do not think his paper will hurt anybody but the "insatiate Archer" at its head. -We wish him success, however. He will find plenty of game up in Ferry county, but they will "mike game" of him if he don't look out. OST There were two or three steamboat arrivals yesterday, but nne the day previous. The D. A. Givens was here in the morning, and the Return in the afternoon, both from Louisville. The Lucy McConnel started up the river in the afternoon with some coal boats. River still receding. Jewelbt. We invite attention to the ad vertisement of G. Cossens in to-dcy's Jour nal. He has removed from his old stand to First street, near the Post Office. He has a splendid assortment on hand of every thin? staple and fancy in. his line, beside a great profusion ol holiday gift jewelry. Call and see him. Now istheTime. 31r. Earnheart, agent for the Knickerbocker, the best of all mag azines, ia now obtaining subscribers at the club price of $2 25 each! This is unprecedentedly low, and every man who wants a magazine, should at once put down his name for oue year to Old Knick. For good read ing, rich humor, and the very exuberance o cheerful spirit, Old Knick is your book. The club is just closing, so hurry around. tCj" The Vincennes News of the Day wil be issued sgain next week. Mr. Jackson has returned with full supplies of new type. The Dattoh Gazette, of Fr:Jy, says MAs Conductor Driggs train on the C. II. & D. R. R., was coming up yesterday evening it was met just below Jones Station, by a hand-car, propelled by three Iiishmen, all o whom were under the influence of liquor. The engineer souuded the whistle and slack ened the speed of his train, but the tteam was up, In the hanJ-car, and on it dashed with unabated speed, till it came in colli sion with the pilot of the locomotive. Iu the unequal contest, the hand-car was com pletely smashed, the Irishmen thrown into the air, and one of them instantly killed. CO" A returned California had 62,000 sto len from an outside coat porket, in St. Louis on the 21th inst. Suspecting a boy who stood near him, the Californian seized and shook him roughly, whrn the money dropped from the leg of the boy's pantaloons upon the floor. C The prisoners in jale at Muscatin, Iowa; recently fell upon the jailor wheit he entered with their food, and beating him severely, took the jail key from, his pocket and opened the door. The jailors crie brought assistance, and one only of the prisoners escaped. 0OTJie Lafayette (Jazttle says that about 12,000 hogs had been slaughtered in tha place, and were still arriving in large numbers. Prospects fur heavy business ' good Prices range from $3 50 to $4 the latter for hogs weighing 200 pounds and over. CCJ'About two thousand persons witnessed the execution of Kehoe, at Toronto, on the 12th inst. He denied being conscious of the murder of his wife, and said he had previously taken -a large quantity of whisky aud laudanum. We supposed a tuit between the circus and the city will grow out of this affair it being a question whether license can be legally charged on a free exhibition. Fatal Accideht. A couple diys ago, w; published a despatch f.om Louisvill? giving a bri f account of a fatal accident there. The Journal of Tuesday gives the f. Mowing details: Three men, in th employ of Mr. Fillion. stone cutter, werm recipitated from the i oof of the five-story building of 31r. Bustard, now in course of erection, on Main str et, about 2 o'clock. One of them, named G o. Schweiber , was instantly killed, an I the other to, named Joeph Schall and Win. Absalom, wera so seriously hurt ti.at they cannot kurvive the injuries. They were all Germans and none o t?ein have families. Tiieso men with three others were on the roof ho. sting a block of stone, when the iron broke and three lost their balaiue. A fourth was saved by being caught by one of the remaining men. The above appeared in the Bulletin of last cvenin. Absalom has since died. -Scha I was conveyed to the hospital, and we understand his physicians entertain hopes of his recovery. The Bulletin made a mistake in stating that the accident was caused by the breaking of a ropa. The rope did not break, but a piece of iron connected with the hoisting apparatus was defective and truke. No blame can be attached to Mr. Fillion. ITnexprctctl f.lberalitf The Signal, published at Jjliet, 111., ?s responsible for the following: 'We heard a tunny anecdote the other day of a certain Esquire, which happened in a neighboring tow. . It ceems that a religious congregation of that town wieheJ to employ a pastor, but after every member of the society had given all he felt able to, there was a deficiency, and uur (riend the Esquire, tho accounted an infiJe!, yet was known to be liberal and geiurou, and it was proposed he should be asked to give something. But it is useless to dwell on these sickening details; suffice to say that here, among the carcasses of some 200 killed and wcunded horses, lay the bodies ol our brave English and French artillerymen, all more or leas frightfully mutilated. Some haiftheir heads taken off at the neck, as if with an axe; others their aru.s, and others, again who were hit in the chest or stcmach, were literally as smashed as if they had been crushed in a mach ne. But it was not alone the allies who lay here; on the contrary, 1'iere were ten Rusnan corpses for one of theirs; but the latter were all killed by musketry before the artillery came up. On this spot the Russians kept drooping shell the whole night but thire vindictive efforts were in vain; all wholay in reach ol their missiles had eullerd the last which they were to endure on earth. Passing up the road to Sebastopol between heaps cf Russian dead, you ccme to the pot where the Guards i ai been compelled to retire from the defense ol the wall abov lukerman Valley. Here our dead were nearly as numerous as they advanced to charge upon the enemy. They lay on their laces, in the same attitude, with their muskets tightly graeped in both hands, and all had the same grim, ptiiulu! frown upon their features, like men who were struck down in the act of closing with their Iocs. Beyond! thit the Russian guardsmen and line regiments lay thick as leaves, intermixed with dead and wounded horses. . The latter, with fractured limbs, were now and then rising, and alter staggering a few steps rolling over among the corpses, sporting and plunging fearfully. Up to the rijht uf the wall was the way to the To-guu Battery. The path lay through the thick brushwood; but the path was slippery with blood, and the Irushwood was broken down and encumbered with the dead. The scene from the battery was awfulawful beyond description. I stood upon the parapet at ab ut nine at night, and felt my heart sink as I gazed upon the scene of carnage around. The noon was at its full, and sho ed every object as if by the Jight 'of day. Facing me wus the Valley of Inkerniann, with the Cheruaya like a band of silver flowing gracefully between the hills, whi h for varied and picturesque beauty, might vie with any part of the world. Yet I shall never recall the memory of Inkermaun Valley with any but feelings of loathing aud horror; for around tue spot from wi'ich I surveyed Ihe tceue, lay upwards ol 5,000 bodies. Many badly wounded also lay there; and their low dull. moans of mortal a-ony struck with hor rible distinctness upon the ear, or, worse stir, the hoarse gurgling cry and vehement struggles uf those who were convulsed before they passed away. Around the hill small groups of men with hospital stretchers were kearching out (or those who still survived; and others, again with lanterns, busiiy turning over the dead, looking (or the bodies of othc rs vht were known 10 be killed, but
