DAILY JOURNAL. A. II. SANDERS, EDITOR.
TERMS OP SUBSCKllTIOS. Daily Joarnal, per year.. 17 50 . by the week IS Tri-Weekly Journal, per year, . W i Weekly Journal CITY OF EVAHSVILLE. FRIDAY MORNING:::::::::::::NOV. 24. Condition of parties. The general distracticn of old parties, and the obliteration of old party lines, as demon. K tkö ras.. It r f tritt roronr silAtmnt nil agu arj luv a vouii ws iiiw v. w v m aw Id the several States, is too complete to ever admit of a re-fusion of the old elements in'to. the same body politic. The so-called .Democratic party, which has ever claimed, and still claims all the union and harmony tobe found in political bodies, now finds itself rent wider assunder, and Into more dis-
. cordant fragment, than any other party.
It is rather amusing than otherwise to 1 witness the humiliation of the old monster
parties, by the independent operation of the people's will, especially when so healthy a täte of politics promises as the result. A man's politics are no longer known by his assumntion of anv old oartv cognomen. A a man calling himself a Democrat in these lat ter days, is now subject to any one of fifty interrogations, as to what kind, or in whose lead he follows. It has recently been discovered in these quarters, by some penetrating "genius," that Joe Lane combines more Democracy at the present time than any other Democrat in the Union. This is truly a new invention, but it does not suit proprogressive "Yoang America." Any man who adheres to the Nebraska swindle, which has now tbeen repudiated both North and South, and is at the same time a favorite of the present administration, is in a most unfortunate fix to become a successful champion of any party. No formidable organization can again be formed under any leader upon the basis of 1 former party creeds! There is no longer any use of arraigning persons for inconsistency '.' to party. We think that parties rather than individuals deserve to be arraigned for infi dclity. In the new organizations which will be formed, the people are determined to know nothing of the past errors of all par ties. All political sins will be washed away in one vast Siloam. In this they will leave all their lameness end leprosies, to con e out with a new skin of political regeneration Plot Cooled If Vet. The Enquirer, in the same column it ex .. presses surprise that it does not receive a larger patronage, coolly publishes the fol t -lowing barefaced falsehood: The Whig papers are shedding tears over Illinois. The Democracy have done as usual there all the Nebraska men are . elected. Should any paper receive the support of honest men, which in the face of facts fa miliar noV to every man in the State, gives utterance to the above inexcusable and abominable untruth! Such positive false hoods marked its miserable course during the whole of the late canvass, in connection ' with the basest slanders ot the men and opinions to which it was opposed. Even after all political excitement has ia a meaa ure died away, it cannot conceal the natura depravity of its principal writer enough to preserve ordinary decency in its political as sertions yet wonders amazingly that a more liberal patronage is not extended it! The only wonder is it receives enj patronage from those it has so grossly abused, and whom it almost daily insults by such shame less contempt of the truth, as that quoted above. - . Great Sale of Ileal E-tate. A rare chance for speculation and excel lent investments in real estate, will be offer ed in this city on the 4th day of Decembe 'jiext, in the positive sale 0LJ8 lets in the Eastern Enlargement of the city. Among all the great sales, and gbod bargains hitherto offered in city lots, few if any have ever presented the inducements to the purchaser "the merchant, the mechanic, or the laborer'' of the opportunity now offered by Messrs. Baker & Garvin. The lots are all eligibly situated for private residences or manufacturing establishments q( and description. They are conveniently situated to the depot of the Evansvilla and Crawfordsville Railroad, and the proposed depjt.of the Evansville, Indianapolis and Cleveland Straight Line Railroad, and within a few hundred feet of the Wabash and Erie Canal. These lots have never before been offered for sale, owing as we understand, to the claims of minor heirs.'but their location beingin what must soon become a populous and thrifty portion of the city, they will doubtless command a ready sale. Terms will be made easy, especially to those who design to make rpeerfy improvements. A plot of the lots may be seen at this office, or by calling upon Baker & Garvin. See advertisements. S3" Barnabas1 letter to the Czar, is wor thy of that Great Bear's earnest attention. It is the production of a "juvenile," but who is "Young America" most happily illustra ted. We hope to hear from him again, but a little briefer, dear sir. 0O"A grandson of Col. Daniel Bcone is on a visit to Cincinnati, Ohio. He finds the country has undergone some improvement, since his grandfather first visited that re sion.
Mill tüer come. 'I I For the Journal. 1 We understand there is a gentleman from .Leite, fr0m liurnaby Bar nab??, f ttee
from New Albany now in our city "prospect ing" for the establishment of a ship yard amongst ns. ,We hope oar good citizens will look after ' him and give him such "aid and comfort" as he may need, and they can afford, to assist him in so worthy and desirable an undertaking.- Our capitalists, real estate owners and foundry men, should in terest themselves at once in this matter. OCX" Two ' stores in Vincennes are sell ing goods for State Stock money at par. Certain stores in Terre Haute, Lafayette, New Albany, Madison, Louisville and Cincinnati, are also receiving Indiana State Stock Money at par for goods. Our store keepers make a discount of 25 per cent, and swear at the Journal for telling ignorant people not to part with their State Stock money at a heavy discount. We repeat the advice to them. If our merchants are turning brokers, let them stick up their shingles it they are 710 brokers, they have no business doing such a terrible business in the way of discounting. ZLg Our neighbors at Vincennes appear to have plenty of game. The News of the Day says there were thirty deer in town for sale on Thursday, also a wagon load of wild ducks "live and kicking" to say nothing of the Rev. Dr. Evans' advertiaement of wild geese, turkeys, wood-cock, snipe, quails end musk-rats. It is astonishing some ofour riends up there don't take advantage of the railroad facilities to prove their devotion. SiGSiriCAST. It is said that out of 400 young men just now seeking British Government employment, enly thirty could pass he following examination, to-wit: To write a good business note; take down a paragraph rom a ftandard authur fron dictation; write out the names of the different countries in England, and exhibit a knowledge of the bur first rules in Arithmetic. Of the in competents it is said that the majority were offdhots of the aristocracy. CTj" Young Mr. Gregg, connected with the New Albany Tribune, and 6on ol Milton Gregg, Esq., ii now in the city in attendance at the session of the Grand Temple ot Honor We tender him the privileges of our sane tum, and only regret he did not bring "dad" alonir. CT Another fine saturating rain com menced falling yesterday evening. We hope it will be long enough and broad enough to raise the river. t 03 The Telegraph pole opposite Law rence's Marble shop on Main street, came down yesterday very unexpectedly, especial ly to the gentleman who just saved his head by a vigorous dodge. A new one (pole not poll) was put up again In a hurry. f3 James Smith, Captain of the Julia Moulton, has been convicted of piracy as being concerned in the Slave Trade. This is the ttrst conviction under the law declar ing Slave Trade piracy, and it remains to be seen what will be done about it. The penalty of course is death, but it is doubtful if Smith is suffered to be executed without the interference of the executive to saie him . CT The opening of the Illinois Central railroad to Galena was celebrated on Wed nesday last with a good deal of ceremony. The mayor, council, and a large number of the citizens of Chicago were present. This gigantic road, from Cairo to Chicago, will be completed as soon as the Mississippi river will allow of transportation of the irom. fJd Mr. Macauley has just returned to England from a protracted vist to Switzer land. The London Athenäum says that we will have two more volumes of this history during the winter. H3"The New York Herald concedes that Clark is elected Governor by 655 majority. The Journal of Commerce, and Courier, and Enquirier show small majorities for him. (KT The railroad between Springfield and Delaware, O., has failed to pay expenses. It is now lying idle the trains are all with drawn not a "toot" is heard "any more again. 1 CO" A farmer by the name of Bennam,of New London county, N. Y., raised this year on fourteen acres of land 1,250 bushels of shelled corn. 33 The Indiana Legislature meets on the first Thursday after the first Monday in January, 1855, and its session is limit to eight weeks duration. fX" Caleb Mills, the recently elected Superintendent of Public Instruction, has en tered upon the duties of his office. 33 The Bedford Standard says that the boys in that place are exceedingly precoc ious: It is absolutely astonishing to observe their amazing forwardness. Boys of respectable, religious, God-fearing parents, from ten to fifteen years old, swear, smoke long nines, and drink whisky with all the nonchalance of veteran sinners. (7 The Columbus Democrat has the following sharp pun: "A Sir. Sharpless advertises in the Marion Mirror, that he will take Indiana wild cat at par, in exchange for goods. It wilF require a aharp look out to And aman less sharp than this Mr. Sharpless.

I don't think the latter true, for your great, great grandfather, old Peter the Great, was about as good on a free fight as most any man I know of, always ixcepling Bill Stokes, who went into a crowd the other day, took off his coat, and knocked seven men down without even raising the perspiration. In my opinion Menchikoff the name is more terrible than the man is not the individual to command an army. He always manages to go into battle rather slow, and generally manages to get out pretty fast Now that won't do; you want a man like old Zack Taylor. You've heard of old Zack, that thought no more of whipping 20,000 men with 4,000, than my dog Watch does of making Phil. Simpson' Rollo stick his tail between his bind legs, and cut like Dick Thomson did on bis board bill. I must con fess, however, that Menclty showed some pluck at Sevastopol, when he drew up his army and told them that if any one of 'em saw him about to run when the cannons commenced firing, to shoot him down, and yet a man that will only stick to his duty and keep his footing from fear of a musket ball, ought to le diked and kept in the nursery. liesides our ecnooimasier, wno nas n a a just been-to New York, says, that he has been informed on good authority, that Mencny tolJ the next officer to see as soon as it was certain the allies were going to take the fortress that the Russians loaded their muskets with blank cartridge?, so t iat there wouldn't beany danger ol his getting hurt much if he did run! , Now, Czar, can you expect anything else but defeat, vvh-n you allow surh a paltry, pusillanimous sneak as he i, to command armies! Why if there was a boy in our townithip ten years old, that couldn't frail Menchy, the community would keep him up, feed him on red peppers, and stick pins into him; and if that didn't make hiui yame enough, they would rub him over with aataidibu and use him for fish bait. To come right to the point, why don't you generalize yourself Punch, England's great artist and funny man, makes even your picture fierce enough and ugly enough to lead an army; then why can't you! Bull and Napv can't stand cold, and all you had to do for success is, just 10 ploy a game 011 them called "Moscow's burning," and, take my word for it, they'll scatter like flies do when the first frost comes. You need about six regiments ofour Kentuck sharpshooters for a reserve; they rould shave the mustaches of the French, at a distance of two hundred yards just as pretty as if a razor had done it. You ought to have been at the shooting match down on Deer Creek lat Tuesday, to see what a rifle can do when it's put into steady hands, with a keen eye at the butt of it. Tim Wilkins split a bullet over tha blade of my lignum vit'j handled knife, at a hundred yards, which proved two things that Tim wasn't slow with the rifle,, and that my knife was good stuff. I was offered fifty cents for it on the spot.. There is another article raised in this country alone, which you are sadly in want of: it is called young America. It would never have let Odessa be a garrison for the Turks; it would never have retreated from the Danube without making some opposition worth speaking of; it would never have left the heights of Alma' for the British to occupy; but I'll tell you what it would have done: it would have followed up Sinope with Constantinople; it would have blotted out the light of the Crescent before the first English cannon barked on the Baltic; and ere a French soldier landed at the Mahometan City, it would have planted the stars and stripes on the temple of the Moslem. It would let the allies into Scbastopdl just to show the world bow pretty it could drive 'em out of it. Nicholas, what do you think of that matenvecentsa aay. Vin. Oaz. A. New Materia, for Paper. We understand that the Albany Journal will soon make its appearance upon paper manufactured from Bass-wood. The following article from the Journal we suepect hints at this revolution in making paper. The Journal says: We have some reason to doubt the accuracy of the surmise that the Japanese manufac'ure their paper from a "pulp of the rice plant." A friend who "knows a thing or two" thinks he has fathomed the secret; and we think if he has nit Jone so he has discovered something quite as available for the paper purpose. If we are not on the eve of a revolution in this important branch oi manufacture we shall never guess again.
