Th CelebVailon t Indlunipll Our Indianapolis exchanges hating been delay d in, their arrival, we were unable to obtain a correct report of the celebration at Indianapolis, in commemoration of the great victory of the People over the combined forces of Old Liners and Doughfaces. We learn that the celebration was largely attended, and passed off delightfully in every particular. There were representative present from every district in the State united, they had all secured the greatest political victory ever achieved in the State by any party so if they did not have a delightful time at this meeting, it was all their own fault. We only wish we could have been presenton the occasion, aa one of the repre-lot sentatives of the "banner district'? ol Democracy, but which this election had ita Democratic majority reduced two thousand. By 10 o'clock on the morninff of the 1st, a Urge crowd had collected at the grove in front of the State House. We learn from the Journal that the meeting a organized by V e appointment of Cul. Thomas Smith, of Ripley, Preaide -t, with one Vice-Presi-dent (rum each Congressional district, and I Duugas Alaguire and IE. II. Eilic, ct the La- j fayette Courier, Secretaries. The "ball was I opened" by Coli Henry S.Lane.in one ol his I happiest efforts. Cob Lnjje's speech is ' spoken. oC lo the hihet terms, as a most ab effort. t a 1 He was followed by Hon. Sani.' Parker, in I a speech ol about an hour, in which he for-1 cibly elucidated the great importance ol the late election, and the necessity lor an adher-1 ence to the urganizttton by which it haul been etr -cted. It had deiuoualrated that the I jvople cwuld always be trusted to protect I their interests and rights, and however they I might have yielded lo the influence of party I names and a80l iations, ' whenever a great I moral issue was depending, the heart of the naliou would be found right. His remark were constantly interrupted by bursts ol ap- j plaue, which evinced how lulJy hissenti-l
menu were met by the feelings of his auJi-1750
ence. ' At the close of his speech, the assembly adjourned for dinner. In the afternoon a larger trowd than ever confine J, and Judge Morton, of Wayne county. led eff in an excellentai.d enthusiastic speech. Alter the conclusion of his speech, & resolution was offered by Mr. Barry to the ef- J fect, that the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the United States, the Ordinance of 1787, and the resolutions o! the 13th of July, were a platform long enough, and broad enough lor the whole I American people to stand upon; which was adopted unanimously, and with great ap-l plause. I Mr. Galloway, of Columbus, O, the gentlemau who has just been elected to Congress over the lamous Dr. Olds, made one o: his best speeches. He was followed by Mr. Riley, of Hancoik, and by filr. Orth, of Lafayette. They occupied the remainder of the aiternoon, and the convention adjourn - ed at nearly dark. It aa marked through out with the very best of feeling, the utmost . .;' , I .. . ... . unanuuity, and by stirring enthu lasm. It has proved vory effectually to the "Old Line Democrats," that it: they have for a moment thoughflhe people" would after' so signal ly defeating their enemies, rest quietly and. be satisfied with their succcts, they sre much iiiistakeu. H. Sjfdebs, Esq: meaning and genera! charges of falsehood' applied to my statements of facta. If he -will - satis'y me of the incorrectness or un T .. m ! f. ti f'i n rm . ik--wniuiviui iiijj v., vi aiij . lurr wuipaui, issued in Indiana notv or for years past, must be issued by a branch of the State 'Rank, or by a regularly constituted free State Stock ; Bank, and in the latter case must hive the signatures of the State Auditor and Register on the note, or the note is a fraud upon the constitution and banking laws of the ; - l bfate; that therefore the notes of the " 1 names liank of Laurel." and of the "Jndiana btate Alining and aianuTacturing Lornpany" and "Conant's Coil Banks," are all frauds upon the constitution and banking laws of the State. And in answer to the question aeked me by Air. Conant. in this morning's Journal, I say distinctly and positively, in reference to the notes of his manulaciuting corporations complained of in my "expose," or any other notes, bills, or certificates tobe isi-ued by his corporations as a circulating medium, that those companies have not the right to puy out those notes "for a piece of coal land, or for f hovels or picks to be used by siid company for mining purposes;" and Jhat they l.ave not the right to give" those notes for wool, cotton, iron, or staple ariiticles of any kind, which they wish to use in their manufacturing business." And 1 need hardly ndd that in every instance where either of these companies pays out one of those notes for any purpose above enumerated in Mr. Conant's question, or any other purpose whatever, receiving value for it, it commits a fraud. - In Issuing or paying out such note?, such companies usurp a right not granted them by the statute law, and prohibited ry the State constitution; and such a usurpation U a very gruve offence against both public trade and public police, if not against public morals. I have not enquired into or made any charge against the lormer good character ur credit of Mr. Conant. That has nothing to do with the question of wh ther or not he und his associates arc now acting in open violation of law, nor have the motives ol Mr. Conant (which he assures us nre honest) anything to do with the case. .Are his companies openly violating and retting at nought the banking law of Indiana by issuing an illegal currency! That is the question. ' This question is no longer debatable.' The facts have been clenrly established, and Mr. Conant for his companies pleads justification and at the same time denies the law. The !aw is too clear to admit of a doubt either inside or outside tie bar. and this community, after hearing both sides. has with great unanimity pronounctd against the offenders. It now remains for thern to take active measures to redeem their iscuep, whether i hey be large or small, and to give the com munity some public notice that they are doing so. If this course is taken, all may yet be well. If not immediately adopted, other parties have given assurance of moving in the mutter, in a way likely to hasten the de sired end, and are now awaiting the deter mination ol those having the management of the Companies in question.
