ed by the refusal of our banks to take theloflne n,-
notes of some of these institutions, before they consent to sacrifice the bills to any amount, or even refuse to receive thetn in ordinary business. Committees have visited Indianapolis from several cities, for the purpose of obtaining informat 011 relative to the securities of these Stock Banks, and of their real solvency. These Committees have reported most em phatically in favor of the entire responsibility of the securities, and that they are satisfied of the safely and solvency of these Banks. In view of the attempts being made to ditscr- dil these B inks outside of Indiana, and originating among those financial rascals, ll e Cincinnati brokers, we think it the duty of our people, if satisfied of the solvency ol these Stock security Banks, tu defend them, at least so far as receiving with confidence their notes. There may be a few rotten concerns among these Banks, for there is scarcely any State Banking system but that may be abuse I, yet they should not condemnthe whole system or all other Banks u ider it. We have no thought, however, that the some fiity odd Banks whose notes are not received by our Evansville Banks, are of this worthless kind, nor that our Bankers here knoio them to be, or evan have ground- for strong suspicion against the great 11 ass of them. We are somewhat astonished lh. t the three Stock Banks of Evansvillle, have not united in doing what they can to support the system under which they hold their charters. They could do this in no better manner than by receiving on de posit the notes of every ttate Stock Bank which they do not Anoic to be unsafe. S If.. Ill Im it t 1-.4 uns 4 i 1 le (.rem River all. She was built at Pittsburgh, at a cost ol $14 000 II r dimensions are as follows: Length 120 fett; H8 feet beam; 5 feet hold; three 36 inch boilers; two engines with 15 inch cylinders, 4 leet stroke; doctor and deck . a ä I I I. She is of very light draught, and in every particular well adapted to the trade. Capt. Baird will command her. H tili holds his interest iu the Eaves, which will run in the Kvansville, Bowling Green and Louisville trade. Capt. Baird has made a proposition to the Department, to carry a weekly mail between Evansville and Bowling Green lor 3,U0U per annum. His proposition is now in the hands of Mr. Guthrie, who, it is supposed, is awaiting ume action on the pari of Evans vi. le, to exhioit her disposition to have such h mail. We trust some action will betaken at once by our business uien on this subject. We need not enumerate to them the advan lages to us and to our business of such a mail. Capt. Baird is the very man to take such a contract, and we believe he can get it without difficulty if our citizens but lake aome action on the subject expressive of their earnest desire for such a mail and to ae carried in such manner. We wish he Evansville grat success. She bears an excellent name, and one that would adorn any steamer afloat. New Family Grocekt VVe Call atten

Our Kansas Territory correspondent in his letter published a few dayssince, alluded to a speech he had heard Senator Atchison make at Leavenworth, Mo., which the ho orable speaker uttered with a bottle of whis- ' key at his elbow, and at its close, w s so intoxicated that he could not walk. We have conversed with a gentleman who heard this same speech, and he verifies the statement of our correspondent. He says moreover tli speech was interlarded with oaths and vulgarity from beginning to end. At. I this man has been held up as a model Democratic statesman. He has occupied the position of President of the United States Senate, and by the death of one man is a possible Prr sident of this great republic ! He is a beau tiful specimen ol democracy. He is the same man who ordered from Kentucky, while President of the U S.Senate, a barrel of Bourbon whiskey to treat his friends at Washington. No wonder the people are r sing in th- ir might to hurl such men from power. No wonder they are sick of a party which arrays itself under the banners of men of such moral weakness as Atchison and mental weakness as Pierce. Mew York I I. cnoii. The election will lake place in New York t i-tnorrow. I here are tour candidates lor Governor Seymour, the present Governor, an old line or Machine Democrat; Bronson, a real Democrat, of the hard-shell order, and the man turned out of the New York Custom House by Pierce to make room for an Abolitionist; Clark, a good Whig; and Uilmm, a Know Nothing. Politics in that State are generally "mixed up" in awful confusion. 0OWe have lost three subscribers on the lower route of the Daily Journal and fourteen on the upper route, owing to the increase of subscription price. This sm 11 loss, so very much less than we had every reason to anlic:pate, is peculiarly grateful to our feelings. It proves to us that we can rrly ujton our friends, and thai the friends of the Journal are many and warm. We thank them kindly for their favor and shall tndeavor to merit a co'ilinuance of their partiality. GO" The New Albany Ledger has been reduced in size, within the foal week. A few months ago it raised its price. The N. A. Tribune says the State Journal and the Tribune are now the largest papers in the in the State. He has falsely and basely misrepresented all my motives and intentions. He is cunning iu my opinion, as the serpent, who before e-wal low ing its prey, covers its victim with its deadly poisonous saliva. Let us examine "Th-Expose" as he calls it. Has not Mr. Ingle been told time and again by the officers of these Companies, that tney were not doing a Banking business-! Iiis own argument, so far as the lace of the articles of association appear, stands out In bold relief against him, in contradictien o his insinuations. Then I ask what right has .Mr. Ingle to impugne my character, ur o distort or lalsely represent my business transactions or intentions, to this or any i ther community ? Il he has taai misconstrued my acts and intentions, does he not justly merit my indignation? I again say that if Mr. Ing'.e has knowingly misconstrued my motiv s and designs !or the purpose of poisoning the public mind against me, he deserves the scorn and contempt of high minded and honorable men. I came to this city a few months ago, with the intention of doing an upright honorable business, wh. eh intention I hav e thus far carried out in good faith. True have not the wealth of a Barnes at a Carpenter, yet am possessed ol enoi gh o this world's g- ods o discharge all my obligations. I did nut expect a slander retailed by insinuations and inuendoes against me for Um purpose of injuring my private b sine.-, an I muih 1-ss by Mr. lug:-, who but a short time since, I cousiderel a pang n ol human perfection . All this misrepresentation of n.otives h.is been palmed upon the public by Mr. Inglr because 1 chose to avail my .seit of the benefit ot the general Imv for Manufacture g purposes. At the same time this pure god-likt individual, in whom the public already ItCOM oiz-'s a second Solomo 1, is acting iu connection with others under a similar law for Banking purposes. Therefore I am unwil ling to believe that this community will condemn the course that I have taken until I have committed some act which shall jn- ly merit their censure, notwithstanding Mr. I 's insinuations to the coutrary. Can it b possible that Mr. I is afraid that this commu nity will suffer from the organization of the Companies he alludes to? Or is he paid by some clique as mouth piece, to utter insinuations without regard to principle or trulls! I cannot believe that he is afraid of any in jury which may result lo the public; and I do not wish to believe that he is a iiejg; and yet the tone of his articles impresses me wi'h that nl- a. I leave Mr. I. to a higher tribunal, for his unholy and scandalous insinuations respecting me, and hope he wilt plainly see that ihe above article referred to, w as not prompted within himself by the everflowing love of good for the interests of this comm.uiity.
