J chose to elevate. Thev became blinded bv their success. They evidently had brought themselves to believe, that any measure or measure or principle they might choose to present to their party, muU be accepted and aupported as orthodox Democracy. And inflated with their power, and fully confident of the servile dependence of the mass ol the Democracy, they proscribed old Democrats who had borne the banners, of their party before these men opened their political eyes, and immolated them on the ; lu,r of their manufactured orthodoxy, if they did but dare breathe a word in opposition to the draught held to their mouths. These leaders greedily seized at the Nebraska Bill, because it was offered by the Administration, and many of them held their offices under the Pierce dynasty. They endeavored to thruat this iniquitous bill down the throats of their followers. They told old and tried Democrats, that unless they adopted this bill as a cardinal principle, and backed the administration on the strength of it, they were no longer Democrats. In pursuance of this jarty tyranny, they read out of the Democratic party of Indiana and Ohio, some of the oldest and best men in that party. They would listen to no other test of Democracy than this bill. They correctly said the election turned upon this question, and this question a elmply the question of administration or anti-administration. But the party had already been driven far enough. They had been lashed by party whips as long and an far as Americans could consent to be tyrnnized over. They rebelled they forgot parly il their American feelings and the resalt is before us. In this oh1 öemoeratie State, almost the Bnpr Democratic Stale of the Union, these rascally and despotic party leaders have been ,iurled from power. The PEOPLE have risen in their might, and -dragged them from the places they disgraced. We, the People, are triumphant. There is a lesson in this a lesson which demagogues will never forget a d that lesson is, the People may be led into errors through party affection and confidence, but the People will be right in the end. Traveling pilots have been numerous on lhe two rivers lately. Having nothing else I a to do, they take trips to study the river duing the lowest of low water times I During recent excursion, we met several squads of the9e gentlemen, as traveling companions, and can bear evidence to their courteous conduct as gentlemen in every particular. A weak minded kind of public opinion seems to regard our river pilots as a rough, ! coarse, card-playing and liquor-guzzling set of fellows, a ways ready for a muss, and a preiiy hard set of customers generally. , Nuw we have a pretty extensive acquaint - ance among these gentlemen, and leel a : little indignant that their general character 1 should be so much misunderstood, and ! though they do not need any defence, we feel like retaliating a little in their behalf. The pioln of the Ohio and Mississippi rivera m B pecui4r c. of men In their , hands are reposed the lives of the thousands and tens of thousands of human beings who annualw travcre these streams, and the j mi,IOII.-of property, the fortunes of thous - and9, which are annuaI1 borne from North to Snnth and frnm S.mth t.i North, tn fPArl nnA m a u u w aw waaa w a w vw wM Hliy action, all these monstrous interests are committed, freely and fully and entirely. As we gaze at the monster 6teamer a floating palace, a little world of life and property, crowded with human beings and loaded with riches, vomiting forth fire from her chimnies, and her furnaces beneath glaring as though the bowels of the levethi m were white firedanger within and around, and one false move, or ignorance of one single spot in the great stream, probably ensuring destruction to all, live?, boat and cargo we contemplate with feelings almost of awe, that little aneck of hummity perched high above the riches of life and property below, yet which has all this immense responsibility centered in it, reposing confidently upon the strong arm, vigilant eye, and wonderous skill of that same speck of humanity upon the pilot. And is it possible, the man occupying this responsible post, with all that little world in his hand, to give to the seas or to give to the earth that hi is at last, what unjust public opinion so often believes him, the mere creature of passion and vice and bad habits! No such thing. There are such men doubtless among our pilots, but they stand m higher among that class than they would in any other. Their services are only used when the labors of belter men cannot be obtained, or sometimes through the partiality of commanders, who do not feel the responsibility of the pilot's labors, from having nothing but their own safety at Etake. But we now speak of the pilots as a body; and speaking of ihem as such, after a general acquaintance with them for years, and intimate and warm friendship with many of their number, we pronounce that public or private opinion of them as false, which denies their responsibility as men, or questions their character as steady, upright and gencrou gentlemen. Miny of them are men of property all of their older members, if not men ol properly, are receiving such wages as may very quickly place them in such posi tion. Their very duties demand of them steadiness, habits of punctuality and watchfulness and prompt decision, utterly antagonistical to the opinion entertained of tnem by many who know them not. The immense responsibilities placed in their hands, demands a character commensurate to the position. Their lives are devoted to the river, although their information is by no means generally confined to their business. 1 here are well read men among them, good financiers, and men preeminenty qualified in every way o fill the position many old pilots now occupy commanders of our greatest steamers. As men they are generous and openhearted strong in their prejudices probably, but equally warm in their partialities impliacable enemies often, but always strong friends. We like them, and we are proud to say, that probably some of the warmest friends we have on earth, are among our river pilots. (KrThe ladies were out in crowds yesterday, enjoying one of the most delightful days we have had for a long time and pernaps, doing a little shopping. This is as it should be. It is a singular coincidence that ladies, steamboats and. wild pigeons, formed the attractive oul-door features of yesterday! Barmer Pkesehtatios. The carriage was ground to mall pieces. The tram was stopped soon as possible all who witnessed the event expected to find the parties killed outright, when to their surprise neither riders nor horse were apparently at all injured. The gentleman and lady wre evidently at the instant thrown on to sand heap, where they landed in safety, as did the horse on the opposite side of the road. iJm The ignorance of European authorities in matters connnected with the United States, is almost incredible. The London Times, in describing the journeys of Louis Philippe in this country, speaks of hardships that betel him "where the Ohio falls into the Mississippi on the Western coast of Virginia." The London Daily News sometime ago published a letter from a special correspondent in the Uuited States, who in describing a horrid affair, which he said, occur red with a runaway negro in Louisiana, ei plained some of the mysteries by s ating that "Algiers, opposite .New Orleans, is the capital of the free State of Indiana." And a distinguished Englishman sometime ago thought himself well-informed enough in American matters to counsel this country in certain affairs. He thought euccess night be attained "because the Stales of Albany and Boston were favorably inclined to his way of thinking." A Strajkjf Freak. A short time since a little boy five years old, son of Willis Mitchell, residing in California, Titus county, Uhio, by some means listened a grain of corn in his nose, where it remained .'our or five weeks. The nose became much swolen aiid very painful. Dr. Ciaiiirs succeeded in re moving the grain last week. When taken oui it was fcund to be in a growing condition, having actually si routed. fjCT We eee by an exchange that the wife of Donald G. The notes of the following banks were received: Bank of Salem, New Albany and Madison hanks, Hank of Connersville, Terre Haute snd Evansvill banks, Steuben Countv Bank at Angola, Ce.ural Bank at Indianapolis, Stock Bank at Columbus, and a few others whose names we were not able to obtain. The brokers refused to take the notes at any price. The cause of this is that a large amount of this money is now held by the brokers ntid the business community, and lhe banks decline to n-deem it themselves or redeem in Eastern exchange unless at a neavy uiscount. The banks will probably make some arrangement for its redemption or wind up.
